  1. Just a wild guess, but maybe try to change the SATA mode in the BIOS to legacy (or compatible).

I already tried this, but no result.

I have got ubuntu from a friend, it works pretty good. But I'm more familiar with rpm based nix.

I just wished mandriva could have worked fine here.. too bad. Anyway.. lets hope for a better future ;)

tux99, thanks for droping by and trying to help, it\s appreciated. Cheers!

  2. Hey everyone.

I'm trying to install Mandriva 2008 (32-bit) on Dell Studio 1537 (core 2 duo - radeon HD), but i'm having a problem:

I can boot the installation DVD, I select installation. The kernel loads, then after I get a black popup saying "No CDROM found". So, I cannot install linux. Since I'm not a windows fan, this is a big issue for me now. I need to get a linux distro on this laptop. Can anyone help please?

I have not tried Mandriva 2009 yet. May be OpenSuse will do fine with this laptop?

    Thanks!

  3. I just installed the latest version of PCLinuxOS.

So far, so go.. I find it cool till now but I still need to try it more..

    1) Anyone else have used or is using it? What are your views about PCLinuxOS ?

    2) It's very similar to Mandi (since it's based on the latter).. But what are the core differences which set it apart from Mandi? (I'm expecting this one to be replied by advanced nix users :P )

  4. Hey guys..

I was not sure where I would post my query, I'm sorry if it does not fit here..

Yeah, so lets get into the subject matter:

    ----------------

I have XAMP installed on Mandi.. My problem is that the messaging system of any php/mysql based systems (whether a forum or text--based game) is not working.. By messaging, I mean the "Private Messages..etc"

I have tried on WinXP, same prob.. though with other alternatives like WAMP or EasyPhp, the messaging works fine.

But with XAMP, it's not working.. I think it has to do with it's internal settings, but I'm not being able to find a solution..

// I have asked for help on XAMP's support forum, but poor support! No answer since 3days now :(

// I'm hoping someone here is using XAMP and can help me?

    ----------------

// In anycase, is there another other alternatives to XAMP for Linux?

    ----------------

    Thanks!

  5. But Windows just works!...

    /me hides

    To the subject:

Saying "Windows better than Linux" is just like saying the sea is dangerous just because you don't know how to swim...

Get to know the the true meaning of something before saying your bucket of water is safer than the sea.

(Linux IS and WILL be better than Windows!)

  6. I find KDE much more comfortable for me than GNome..

The placement, styles and features of KDE are more nice for my needs..

But I have noted that GNome might be a better solution for people indulged in deep programming as it offers more tools and features.. but i dnt know how far this is true?

  7. The sagem modem, i guess is a usb modem type?

In general, modem are a headache to use with linux. If you are lucky wnough it might work, but this is very rare.

The sure way is to go a for a router/ethernet modem. Here there is no way of frustration.

    All the best!

  8. A couple of days ago I checked out the home page of one of the core dev's for rsgallery a Joomla component.

The guy is starting his own web design business and he had a few grammatical errors etc. on his site so I emailed him and corrected them.

He was really great and said if I needed any help just ask... but I said no need, you are already helping me by helping others with rsgallery and in OpenSource what you give often comes back ...

I checked my charity website this monring and someone had posted two banners, made in Gimp anonymously, they didn't even have the disease... and much nicer than the quick one I knocked up...

Some days things happen that restore your faith in humanity and just generally helping people when you can.

    Such people deserves respect!

    Cheers for team-spirit!

  9. Man, you do NOT need to join their paid community IMHO!!!

This forum is far the BEST one out there! And you will learn MANY things for FREE!!!!!!!!!

And as the distro is concerned, you can get free installation DVDs in magazins - check your local retail library for this.. or you can also download - the Gurus here can tell you more about this.

    Greetz!

  10. Oh..perhaps you guys are right...i don't know..

But i don't blame linux, since i LOVE linux...and no way am i going to drop it..

My motherboard is asus and my RAM is kingstone..

Currently, i'm moving from winter to summer...and in the day its becoming hot..

Yeah it could have been a hardware temporary problem..as i said i have dettached my hard-drive, pci cards, memory ..cmos battery..etc.. and then i have re-assembled them..

After that my pc, got fine..

I really hope it's not a hacking/cracking problem... it's always better to have hardware issue than the latter..

  11. @ianw1974:

I could was not able to boot get through the logs.. but in any case if i was able, how do i know if it was compromised?

    @Gowator

i have not run such kind of scripts Gowator...

I have tested my keyboard with another pc..it works fine..it's a recent keyboard..

I went un-plugging some of the parts of my pc...and re-assembled them again.. and i have reset the CMOS/ BIOS.. this way, i now can access the bios and just re-set the cylinder values of my partitions (thats the beauty of ranish rpm)

I booted from my winXP..no damage seems to have been done since i never used it for internet..and thank God my DATA partition seems to be ok too..

but my linux still had that crazy behaviour..

    I have just finished re-installing linux again..now it's working..

I still cannot understand what has happened...(Any idea about this guys?)

Besides, i have used the FTP program (i think it's called gFTP) almost everyday for several hours for my web-works..

Could that have created a hole somewhere?

Damm..never saw my pc mad like this before..

Anywayz, But now i need to be serious about securing my pc.. till now i have just use linux without caring about avs or firewalls..just knew shorewall was here running..lol

Can you guys advice me about this?

I guess shorewall is not really good.. or perhaps i went faulty somewhere...

  12. I got a bad shock today!! (I have mandriva2006 - i686)

It all started when i was browsing the net with opera 9.01..

Just suddenly, everything was not under my control... i could not click on anything..and my browser went mad.. i tried to close..after some 5tries, it closed!

But then when i attempted to re-boot from start-menu..all my clicks was not working..

So, i put-off main power and re-start my pc..

I thought it was ok this time..but damm.. my system went CRAZY!!!! Even my bash shell wnet mad.. I have something exactly like this on my bash-shell:

    ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,[wakish@localhost,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,],,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
    ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
    ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, (this "," went on FOREVER and EVER!!)

Now, i cannot re-boot from the linux OS..so i use main power to shut-down.

My next reflex is to RE_INSTALL linux..BUT this time

    I'M TERRIFIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have severals partitions on my pc..out of which i run linux for main purposes and for internet.. and i have a winXP os for my course-works..etc.. I CANNOT EVEn run my winXP.

Even when i re-boot from main power, i CANNOT access my BIOS!!!! An unsual screen just pop-up instantly showing a weird boot menu..but i CANNOT STILL do anything..everything is just like freezed!!

Also note that, i use ranish boot manager..and each time i have to get that boot manager to pop-up to choose my os.. but now cannot see that boot manager since i get the thing said above.

All that happen early this morning..i really really desperate.. i need my pc, i have IMPORTANT projects to submit for my course..and alll work to do..

Please guys/friends try to help me out.. i'm really in a bad state...

  13. Hello guys!

WAMP5 is a great package to run PHP/MySQL/Apache..etc.. on windows..

The very nice feature of this package is that it allows you run your PHP files in an offline mode..this way your pc is not exposed on the internet..so that you can just concentrate on your coding/working aspects..

I have tried to find an alternative for linux, but have not found anything so far..

Can anyone help me in this regard?

    Thanks..

  14. Hi..

For amsn, do NOT install with rpm..

Download its tarball source, compile and use!

It's great tool, far better than msn itself!!

    Details:

    1) Extract source folder to your home directory
    2) In bash prompt, su root, and go to the amsn source folder (found in home)
    3) ./configure
    4) make install
    5) You can now launch amsn by typing : amsn
    6) Enjoooy with some beer/snacks :)

    Side note:

When you compile, use "make install", instead of "make"
