  1. OK, but how do I go about doing that? Are there different ways of adding a printer in Vista?
  2. Progress: I managed to add the printer for the laptop in Mandriva! In the end it was quite simple with CUPS. But I have not been able to add the printer for Vista. I would need it for Vista if my son wants to play some windows games he needs to print from (in the past he needed printing for Bob the Builder game and for one Batman kiddie game). I need the printer mostly for my Mandriva, but it would eventually be nice to be able to get it to work in Vista as well. Anyway, this has partly been solved.
  3. No luck. Could someone, who's been able to print over network (be it over two linux machines or printing from windows to linux), post the conf file (/etc/cups/cupsd.conf) here? If possible from a Mandriva 2009.1 installation... I think the problem may be on my cups setup. I'd like to see what's wrong with my setup. It cannot be the firewall on my Mandriva setup as I've tested with the firewall disabled. And I've tried on my laptop with both Mandriva and Vista with no luck.
  4. OK, tnx David. I will check and redo the installation on Vista. I think I did it pretty much like you discribed it, but I think I have the printer on RAW not LPR. Is that the problem then? Oh, and another thing: Why did you change the port to 515? I have also been unable to set the printer in Mandriva 2009.1 on the same hardware (dual boot laptop). That would suggest some kind of problem on the other end.
  5. [Yes, I agree, there's not much information in that Vista message... Well, I did install the correct driver in Vista - it's just that it doesn't seem to get a reply from the printer/Mandriva PC. I just don't know what it is that I'm missing.
  6. Thanks David, I'll have a look!
  7. Here's a screen copy of what happens after trying to print a test page in Vista.
  8. Sorry, I forgot to mention that I did try through there as well. I accessed the conf file from the cups web interface (I can also access the cups web interface and configure the printer from my Vista laptop remotely.
  9. I have a USB printer (all-in-one: HP 2350 PSC) attached to my Mandriva 2009.1 desktop. I also have a laptop, I would like to be able to print to the said printer with Mandriva (or on rare occation with Vista). I have tried to set it up for a long time, but no luck. I thought this page was quite good in giving advice, but couldn't get it to work (my config file seems a little different from that of the opensuse one). I did make some additions to the cupsd.conf file, but I am really not sure what is wrong with it and why I cannot connect to the printer. I have disabled firewall altogether. From my Vista laptop I can ping Mandriva system OK and I can connect to the cups page: http://192.168.254.5:631/printers/. But I cannot set the printer up in Vista (or in Mandriva 2009.1). Oh, and I have installed and enabled sambaserver on this Mandriva desktop, as I would like to share some files later on between Mandriva and Windows. Hope this doesn't interfere with ipp printing. I did also try to get the sambaprinter working, but that didn't work either. I couldn't get Vista to print to that printer, even though I did find the network printer (samba) from the Vista laptop. Where to go from here? Here's my /etc/cups/cupsd.conf file: # Show troubleshooting information in error_log. LogLevel debug SystemGroup lpadmin root Group sys User lp # Allow remote access Port 631 Listen /var/run/cups/cups.sock # Enable printer sharing and shared printers. 10. My thoughts exactly - I just cannot test it as my Ixus is not yet supported...
  11. Yes, that's quite an interesting idea. In fact, I just found this a few weeks ago: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK. This will make your pocket Canon work like you never thougt possible. Too bad my new Canon Ixus 990IS is not yet supported. Hopefully soon...
  12. Yep, thanks Greg2! That did the trick! It's not running perfectly on wine, but it's running.
  13. Thanks dexter11. I downloaded it and tried to run it under Wine, but am experiencing some promlems. I got an e-mail with the serial no. from telltale games, but under wine it didn't move forward when I keyd in the serial no. It just gave me the same dialogue window again and again. And when I finally killed it, it will not run again. Anyone here have gotten this ToMI to work under wine? I just downloaded the latest wine in repos. The version is 1.1.27.
  14. From MCC -> Configure media sources -> Options -> Global options -> Download program to use
  15. OK, solved it. Perhaps curl was broken or something, as all I did was change the programme from curl to wget. This did the trick and I was able to add all the sources I wanted. Me happy now. I am now downloading the 440 updated packages.
  16. This is the result: # urpmi.addmedia 'Main' 'ftp://ftp.free.fr/mirrors/ftp.mandriva.com/MandrivaLinux/official/2009.1/i586/media/main/release' adding medium "Main" ...retrieving failed: curl failed: exited with 6 no metadata found for medium "Main" Then I stopped shorewall and tried again. No metadata found for medium "main".. I don't think it's a hw compatibility problem as I can still connect to internet. I don't get it...
  17. I will try that hopefully tonight when I get the chance. I didn't realize that the speedball's suggestion was any different to what I have tried, but I will definitely give it a go. I tried again earlier today with the Easy URPMI, but with the same result (no mirrors found). I have installed the new version just like I always have: making a fresh installation (not updating) and formating "/" while keeping "/home". Does that have anything to do with it?
  18. Thanks xboxboy. For me this is the first time, but if that's the case, then I will keep trying.
  19. I reinstalled the Mandriva 2009.1 - no help. The situation is the same. I can connect to internet from this PC (I'm posting this from that very PC), but cannot add sources. I get this list: [root@localhost dude67]# urpmi.addmedia --mirrorlist 'http://api.mandriva.com/mirrors/basic.2009.1.i586.list' 'Main' 'media/main/release' adding medium "Main" mirror list not found Could not find a mirror from mirrorlist http://api.mandriva.com/mirrors/basic.2009.1.i586.list [root@localhost dude67]# urpmi.addmedia --mirrorlist 'http://api.mandriva.com/mirrors/basic.2009.1.i586.list' 'Contrib' 'media/contrib/release' adding medium "Contrib" mirror list not found Could not find a mirror from mirrorlist http://api.mandriva.com/mirrors/basic.2009.1.i586.list [root@localhost dude67]# urpmi.addmedia --mirrorlist 'http://api.mandriva.com/mirrors/basic.2009.1.i586.list' 'Non-free' 'media/non-free/release' adding medium "Non-free" mirror list not found Could not find a mirror from mirrorlist http://api.mandriva.com/mirrors/basic.2009.1.i586.list [root@localhost dude67]# urpmi.addmedia --mirrorlist 'http://api.mandriva.com/mirrors/basic.2009.1.i586.list' 'Main Updates' 'media/main/updates' adding medium "Main Updates" mirror list not found Could not find a mirror from mirrorlist http://api.mandriva.com/mirrors/basic.2009.1.i586.list [root@localhost dude67]# urpmi.addmedia --mirrorlist 'http://api.mandriva.com/mirrors/basic.2009.1.i586.list' 'Contrib Updates' 'media/contrib/updates' adding medium "Contrib Updates" mirror list not found Could not find a mirror from mirrorlist http://api.mandriva.com/mirrors/basic.2009.1.i586.list [root@localhost dude67]# urpmi.addmedia --mirrorlist 'http://api.mandriva.com/mirrors/basic.2009.1.i586.list' 'Non-free Updates' 'media/non-free/updates' adding medium "Non-free Updates" mirror list not found Could not find a mirror from mirrorlist http://api.mandriva.com/mirrors/basic.2009.1.i586.list [root@localhost dude67]# urpmi.addmedia --mirrorlist 'http://plf.zarb.org/mirrors/2009.1.i586.list' 'PLF Free' '../../../2009.1/free/release/binary/i586' adding medium "PLF Free" mirror list not found Could not find a mirror from mirrorlist http://plf.zarb.org/mirrors/2009.1.i586.list [root@localhost dude67]# urpmi.addmedia --mirrorlist 'http://plf.zarb.org/mirrors/2009.1.i586.list' 'PLF Non-free' '../../../2009.1/non-free/release/binary/i586' adding medium "PLF Non-free" mirror list not found Could not find a mirror from mirrorlist http://plf.zarb.org/mirrors/2009.1.i586.list Then I tried pinging the site. 20. Well, I've always used the html backup and it has worked fine. Although I have not used it in a couple of years, I would expect it to work just fine. Just give it a go, you won't lose anything.
  21. I cannot access Windows atm, but in Mandriva FF I can open "Organize bookmars" (in Bookmarks menu) and there choose "Import and export". There export it to html and then import then this file within your linux FF.
  22. Thanks speedball, but is there really something different in your approach? I have tried to add them several different way from auto detect mode to individually adding them from several different location near and far. I believe my only chance is to re-install the whole thing anew. I see that MDV2010.0 is still not due until early November, so I'm not going to wait that long. I'll re-install the bugger and post back.
  23. Thanks again. Still, this is the way I have tried. I have used Mandriva for more then three years, but never have I run into this kind of problem. Anyone?
  24. Thanks boatman9. That's just basically what I did. Well, I didn't remove the media (DVD), but when I tried adding media: urpmi.addmedia --distrib --mirrorlist '$MIRRORLIST' It failed with the error message I posted.
  25. I have this PC #2 with Mandriva / WinXP dualboot system. I rarely use this PC anymore so I hadn't updated 2009.0 to 2009.1 until yesterday. Now, when it's time to get all the updated packages, I cannot add any medias! I tried through the Easy URPMI with all possible options (manual selection of packages, manual mirror selection and fully automatic). I also went through MCC and tried to add medias from GUI, but no luck. I used the same DVD Free that I used when installing my PC #1 so that should not be the problem. I can connect to internet and I can ping e.g. plf.zarb.org with no problem. But all the medias I'm trying to download sources for I get the same error message pop-up. It says: "Could not find a mirror from mirrorlist $MIRRORLIST" Any ideas what the problem might be?
