I'm sure I shouldn';t even need to ask this one, but...... I have my mandrake box setup as the server for all the comps in my house. I have shares and internet and all that stuff configured (finaly) but I need some help with the printer. I have a printer connected to my mandrake box via USB. THe domain is localhost.locldomain and the IP for my mandrake box is 192.168.1.1 WHat should the URL be for my printer??? THanks

Well, it looks like I definately won't be messing with glibc2.3 directly. I'm just too new to linux to mess with it. I'll try compiling from source first and if tht does n't work, I guess I'll upgrade to 9.1 I just hate doing that now. I just got 9.0 working right on my system. One question: I have the 9.0 powerpack installed, and just about every package that was available on the CD's is on my computer. Could I just download the first install ISO and do an upgrade install to update the kernel and important libs? or do I realy NEED the first two?

Sadly, it is a need. I'm trying to install SynCE from http://synce.sourceforge.net/synce and it won't let me install without glibc2.3 This program is not optional for me. I spent about $500.00 (A gigantic investment for me) on my PocketPC. I can't sync my PocketPC, transfer files to and from it, or install software to it without SynCE, so it's a must. Also, is there any harm in forcing it to install without glibc2.3? I realize it may not work correctly with 2.2, but will I actualy hurt anything? THanks.

I'm sorry to ask what is probably a dumb question, but where can I get this? I have mandrake 9.0 with glib2.2 and I need 2.3 for a program I'm trying to use. Also, anything special I need to do to install it?

Yup, it's sad realy. I do know that a few very misguided programing teams have chosen not to do a linux port because of winex whitch is just rediculous. I wish they would do a litle research off winex's web site.

Personaly, I don't know what the point of winex is. I own dozens of games. And I have tried all of them and you know what? DeerAvenger is the only game that would run, and there is a 3 second delay in the sound rendering the game unplayable. Tribes2 (linux port no longer available) bust Rayman bust carmageddon, mounting the CD makes my computer freeze, never got to try winex roller coaster Tycoon, bust Dungeon Keeper 2 bust Balck and White, only works with the "retail" version of WineX 3.0 so bust for me Motocross madness bust midtown madness bust monster truck madness bust Schizm bust three different tomb raider games, all bust The list goes on and on. I'll admit that WineX works perfectly for a select handfull of the most popular games, but if you look, they only have 5 games that are fully supported. Yes, there's a ton at the 4 star level, but do the math, that's 80% functional, I don't know if you've ever played an 80% functional game, but it's not much fun. DOn't get me wrong, I know a lot of people have a lot of games that work great, but I'm not one of those people. I spent years in highschool and junior college buying windows games and not one works to a "playable" extent. I'm sorry, but i don't call that a threat to anything.

So, I'm not clear. What exactly is the solution here? I have the same problem, though I can't afford a subscritption.

Also, in the last two digits in canon pronters are for other things. Example. the BJC-2100 and BJC-2110 are the exact same printer except that the 2110 was originaly sold by Gateway with their select series and later clearanced by BestBuy and a few others. Also, the BJC-2100 and 2000 drivers are interchangable.

Okay, I've figured out sort of what I want to do. I want to connect to the internet with the external serial dial-up modem on my linux box. I want my linux box as a gateway on the WAN side of my router making it's own litle network. I want my other home computers, (two of them running two differnt OS's (for a total of three different OS's) to be their own litle network on the LAN side. Here is how ti's all set-up now, and it's not right. Where's my mistake??????? My linux box has it's NIC IP address set to 192.168.1.1 and is successfully connected to the router's WAN port. I have also used drakconnect to set up my internet connection sharing from my modem to eth0. My "home" PC's are set to DHCP IP addresses and successfully conneted to the router whitch is braodcasting IP's to them. Through them I can access the "internal" confiugartion of the router by putting the router's internal IP address whitch is 192.168.2.1 I should point out that from my past experience, this is pretty fancy router. Kind of cool actualy, the router has a fairly expansive web-interface for configuration with some nice pretty menus. I just open a browser on any computer ojn the LAN side and type in 192.168.2.1 whitch is the default IP for the router. Here's the problem. I'm not sure how to configure the WAN settings in the router itself. Here are the WAN options in the routers interface. DynamicIP PPPoE PPTP BigPond StaticIP EAch of these has all the appropriate options underneath it, but I dont' know what to do. All I want to know is what is the best way to configure my conection. I figured it would either be dynamic IP or static IP and not one of the other protocals. If I select Dynamic IP, I'm asked for a hostname and an MAC address. I don't know what to put for either one. If I put static IP, I'm asked for three things IP address given to me by my service provider Subnet mask (I used 255.255.255.0 everywhere else) Service provider gateway address I tried static using 192.168.1.2 for assigned IP and 192.168.1.1 for the gateway, but that didn't work. So, tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Nope, it's efinately not just you. It is a well established fact that linux rns MUCH faster than windows on older hardware. If you want it to run even faster, try using gnome, xfce, fluxbox or basicaly any WM other than KDE. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE kde, and it is pretty much all I use, but it is the most memory intensive WM that I am aware of. Also, if you are up to it, compiling your own kernel can craet a big proformance boost. Of course, you sound pretty green, so that might be something to try down the road. Not sure about the screen res thing, though I'm sure somebody knows the solution. As far as the other 2 CD's, I highly reccomend you instll them. There's a ton of beautiful linux apps on the them.

I 'd actualy realy like to get a subscription, at least long enough to download it all, but bread is pretty tight right now, so it is going to have to wait. By the way, I know that they don't offer the current version to non-subsscribers, but is it okay to redistribute it or is that a no-no?

I've actualy been trying to compile my own kernel. Such a noob, I thought I had done so and posted saying how pleased I was, turns out I was till booting my old kernel. Oh well, at least I know the answer now and when I have time to build a good kernel I'll be sure to select that.

I decided to go ahead and make shell scripts, didn'te realize I could enter wine blah/blah/blah.exe in th kmenu, I'll try that, it'd be nice to get rid of the scripts folder I made for all my programs. THanks guys.

Yes, it's a single USB cable. I was told once before that this sin't possble under linux, but as I said, it works flawlessly under knoppix.

I used both in windows, but I always fell beck to explorer. Don't know why, it just seemed better at the time. Now I've got 6 browsers installed and Mozzilais my favorite by miles. I guess I just never gave it a fair chance in windows

I'm sure this is possible, but I don't know how. I have aprogram installed localy that only runs through wine (and is correctly configured to do so). How do add this program to the K menu? SHould be simple, I just don't know how.

YEah, it's too bad there isn't a native linux version of photoshop. GIMP is good, but it's not photoshop.

You know it's funny, I never liked it in Windows either, but it is my bread and butter browser in linux.

That's my point, I kept trying to use gohst view and what not to view pfd's whitch stinks. I didn't realize there was an actual Adobe version of reader in mozilla. As I said, onbody with ANY linux experience would find this interesting, but I am a n00b and was fealing left out when it came to pdf's

Okay,I'm sure that non-n00bs will be thougholy un-impressed by this tip, but I just realized that mozilla has a ful function Adobe acrobat reader plugin, unlike ghost view or others that have half-assed adobe support at best, that means you can just open acrobat files with mozila.
