I have also gotten 2000 to work nicely and I have given up on xp for a while. The compatability between the two IS 100% or it's so darn close I can't make it screw up on purpose.

THe only legal way is to buy a subscription, and since I feal that they deserve financial support, I wouldnt' share warez sources if I knew any.

NOTE!!!! I'm not suggestion that you're looking for something illegal, I'm just getting it out of the way now because these threads have a tendancy of going there.

With the last version, there were people that had downloaded and compiled the CVS vesion and packaged it in an RPM, but these never worked quite right, and there was some debate as to their legality. also note that many programs that work with the subscribers version do NOT work with the free version as there are some commercial closed source dlls included in the paid version.

Also, when you go through package selection, let's say you select "Gaming station" you know how many of the 50 or so games that come on the CD's are installed? 3, just 3.

interesting, next time I do a re-install, I'll be sure toNOT check the box for game station and see what happens. No, there's nothing wrong with my CD's.

For this thread, we're clearly in case #1. There are excellent and viable alternatives to MS-Office under Linux.

I think you have missed the point. The point is that she is tired of all the crashes and instability of the OS with windows. She's tired of saving something to a floppy and finding that windows didn't actualy save it because it stuck the file in a holding pattern untill system resources were more available and she ended up loosing her work. In every way but one, she is tired of windows and wants to try linux.

and as for there being a good linux alternative, i don't know how you couldsay that there is one if you actualy read this whole thread. Clearly, while there are many wonderful office apps for linux, not one of them offers 100% compatability wth MS office formats If those 3 apps were usable under linux, she could switch.

also for the record, they work beautifully under crossover (demo version) I'm downlaoding Winex3.2 right now and I'm hoping that will work, though, I doubt it seriously

for those hear that like being able to play more than one or two open GL games with linux, Winex is now at version 3.2. I'll let you all know how well it works once I finish downloading it with my ultra slow 56k modem.

I would agree that the interface is well refined and as you would expect in a final dot release, the number of bugs has seriously been reduced, but in a few areas 9.2 is a big disappointment.

My first experience with 9.2 were very similar when i installed it a while back. HOwever, I was not so impressed after a few days. I found the lack of kernel source to be offensively stupid. While I realize that more and more people have some sort of broadband connection, many of us still use dial-up, and to omit such a critically important package, that is also very large and hard to download on 56k, really makes it much harder to use linux.

I have found that many programs one would normally expect to be installer were not. Example, without installing extra software after install, it is not possible to connect to the internet via dial-up without opening up the mandrake control center. I can under stand not including this by default, but if you set up you internet connections as dial-up durning the install process, it should install kppp AND wvdial, right now it doesn't install either. Worst of all is that rpm is somehow broken. I have formatted my hard drive and re-installed 6 or 8 times (this is actually typical for me, I'm still learning linux and once I've borked my system it's sometimes easier to start over), anyway, in all those installs, you know how many times I was able to get the kernel source that I spent 2 hours downloading? Just once. That means that I can't compile C programs and I can't use the 3d acceleration abilities of my nVidia video card.

Don't get me wrong the problems are few, it's just that compared to an otherwise fantastic release, I can't image that nobody picked up on this stuff before release.

It's not anything that XP does so wonderfuly, it's that she works on a lot of highly formated documents, under fairly strict sets of constraints on said formatting. The problem is that the filters that let OO/SO read and write to MS office formats are only about 98% so it causes problems when going back and forth between the home computer and theones at school.

For most people, myself included, that 98% is more than enough and we never notice the differnce. However, when 1/3 of the effort in a paper is formatting and it has to be 'just so' a 2% difference can mean lines carrying over on to different pages, and color information getting lost all together. So it's a matter of intera=operability with what she must use at the campus computer lab.

As for my specific errors, I didn't post them because I asuemd that this was something that others had encountered. A 'stock' problem if you will. I will post my errors later.

Yes, we are college students, but she isn't willing to try linux iwth SO either. It's a Office XP or no linux kind of deal.

I'm trying to get Office XP instaled on linux with either Wine or WineX3.1.

If I can do this, (without buying cross-over office) then my girlfirend will let me migrate her laptop form windows to linux. i know it works with codeweavers, but I don't have the bread right now. So, unless somebody has a proper lisence that they don't want anymore, I'm stuck with wine or winex.

Yes, I know OpenOffice is 96% compatible with MS office, but she's not okay with 96%

In my own personal experience I've found that re-installing is the best fix for this kind of realy mysterious problem. The only bit of advice i have for you is only applicable for next time. Be realy carefull with the options you choose durring install, and make sure it's right, then make aquick install floppy so that next time, the re-install will go as fast as possible.

Well, I may be no expert, but I also perefer kde. It's no anything in particular that it does or doesn't do, it's just that I find it more comfortable.

Is 9.2 available for the general public to download, or is it still limited to club members?

to be honest, I'm not sure. I purchased CD's from http://www.cheapbytes.com a good long while ago now. When I bought them, I was under the impression that the publick download was available, but apearantly not, so basiacly, I just don't know the answer to your question.

As a side, since your main question is pretty well answered, for Bible software, you should look into the sword project. It's what I use and there's versions for just about every platform.

Can you tell me how big the file was in MB? And just out of curiosity, what kind of "actual" download speeds do you get on that 2mb connection?

For what it's worth, I think this is REALLY good advice. There's only one way to learn to be commfortable with a terminal prompt, and like he said, you don't have much to lose.

If you really can't do the terminal thing, kuchwas is also right, webmin is pretty great.

I wouldn't use the hardware install in kde3.

Open up the mandrake control center. It's listed in the "k-menu" under configuration > configure your computer.

Once that's open, go to network and internet settings and then drakconnect.

Once there, it's all pretty simple, it should set up any 'drivers' for you.

Many routers have NAT built in. I have a great router. It's a SMC Barricade Turbo model SM?C2404WBR

1 WAN port that your sip plugs into, three LAN ports for hard connected computers and my favorite, it's also a WiFi station. I think it was about $150.00, but I may be wrong, I bought it a while ago.

Overall I'm very happy with this release. My initial response was that it was wonderfull. since then I've realized that there are some issues. It didn't install right the first couple trys for no particualr reason, and they didn't put kernel source ont he CD's, but beyond that, I'm VERY hapy and I will prbably stick with this release untill some very drastic changes happen.

I don't know too much about linux on laptops, though there are a lot of resources out there for the reading. By any chance have you ever run any other version of linux successfully on this laptop?

Let me guess, you're using mandrake 9.2??

When I posted that, I was using mandrake 9.1 whitch, as you may or may not know used a slightly older version of hpijs, the HP inkjet server and also a slightly older and not compatible version of the hpoj driver, whitch is what enables the scanning. So, then, you had to let printer drake configure it, whitch would of course, not let you print. Then you had to manualy remove about 6 packages, and compile the latest CVS of hpoj and the latest tarball of hpijs, configure the printer from the console with 'ptal-init setup' and then set it up in cups, either through the command line or web admin tool. If at any point you tried to have MCC help with any of this, you were out of luck and had to start over.

That's why I said it was a biatch.

Of couse, with 9.2, life is beautiful. Set-up is all automatic and it works perfectly first time.

As for the faxing, that's both simple and obvious. Any computer with a modem, printer and scanner can be used as a fax machine. There are a number of fax programs whitch can send a scanned image and almost all faz reception programs can print. Haveing a multi function device just means you can do it with less junk on you desk.
