  1. looks like the whole world is going wireless broadband that doesnt require a hotspot: Sprint, Verizon, etc. I tried to use the Sprint wireless broad band card in my laptop using Mandriva 2006, but it failed. I talked to the tech support people at Sprint and appearently the card simulates a lot of stuff like ethernet card, modem, and some other stuff. It requires windows to work but I was hoping I could make it work in linux some how. Seems like everyone is going wireless broadband, but all the systems require windows. Is there any way for linux users to get totally wireless broadband nationwide?
  2. I am running Mandriva 2006. I have the firewall up (by accident, sometimes I remove it because it blocks ports) and I am almost sure I see SHOREWALL popup during my booting messages on the screen. So, I guess thats all I can do.
  3. I am using wi fi at a hotel and someone is doing a port scan on my computer. I called tech services and they said, "yea, we have all the ports open on our router, just use a firewall". I have put the person doing the scan on my black list. I am not sure if that was the right thing to do? Is there any other procedure I can do to protect myself?
  4. I know that xen and bochs virtual machines are available on Mandriva 2006. What other virtual machines does Mandriva come pachaged with?
  5. In Mandriva 2006, there is no .bash_profile. All I see is .bash_history. Even if there were, how would the $PATH look?
  6. I was having trouble too. I run vmware using NAT. There was a problem with VMware overwriting /etc/resolv.conf. Take a look at this link at the VMware site: http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jsp...28328&tstart=90
  7. I was wondering if there is some easy GUI for Xen like there is for VMware? I hope XEN isnt some complicated console based virtual machine. I have it installed in Mandriva 2006 but I dont even know what command to type to get things rolling: xm? xend? [moved from Terminal Shell Commands, etc by spinynorman]
  8. single user mode would be good, actually that is the method to which I was referring. I remember the file .profile was one to edit. These days I cant find .profile or .bashrc. Even if I could, the way to set the path is probably diferent too. If there is a way to set it for single user I would be interested in knowing.
  9. I guess this command is not completely global, coz java doesnt work in Firefox. I have to do another sym link to the mozilla plugin folders? Back around 2002, I remember you could just do a $PATH configuration in .rcbash and bingo that was it. Java worked everywhere. Are the good ole days over?
  10. I have java installed, but I dont have it configure. I would like to configure it globally for all applications. In the past, that has involved setting some $PATH in .rcbash or .profile. Recently I saw something on the internet about java.sh. Its confusing. Is there some quick and easy way to do this? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
