thanks much :) whoops hold on, I installed the packages but VMware is giving me the following errors The path "/usr/src/linux/include" is a kernel header file directory, but it does not contain the file "linux/version.h" as expected. This can happen if the kernel has never been built, or if you have invoked the "make mrproper" command in your kernel directory. In any case, you may want to rebuild your kernel. is this a kernel source problem?

I did a uname -a and found that I am using the following kernel: 2.6.27-desktop586-0.rc8.2mnb #1 smp which source package can I install that corresponds to this kernel. I need to recompile the kernel for VMware. Thanks

I just installed Mandriva 2009 and am using KDE. I tried to copy some files to my desktop and cant see any icons. It reminds me of how ICE WM looks, no icons on the Desktop. Is this the future of KDE or am I doing something wrong?

is there a way to upgrade Mandriva to the newest release within the OS rather than burning a new CD iso?

I am using kernel 2.6.24.7-laptop-1mnb but for the life of me I cant find the source for this kernel. What is this thing called? I cant see it in the when I install new software and search for kernel sources.

That was some good info, thanks Well, I originally installed the usuall FTP package (by Krebos, or something) and that didnt work. So, I replaced it with proftpd, and that didnt work either. Believe it or not, I just rebooted and bingo everything worked. I decied to stay with proftpd since that came by default on my Trustix Server. That way, I can stick with one type of server and learn it well. Again thanks for the input.

I installed FTP on my system but I dont think I know how to start the server. I have tried to access it from within my network using putty and mozilla. I also tried "service ftpd start" and that doesnt work. Your help is appreciated. WAIT. Now it looks like I can access my machine with mozilla but now with the putty version of sftp. Furthermore, I have no clue how to turn the service on and off. This is very mysterious.

It finally worked. I was doing this at work and I think my company blocks certain important ports. I have trouble with accessing my FTP server at home too. So, I just went home after work and tried it and it worked FAST. Thanks for the input guys.

This would be a great service if any of the links in easy URPMI worked. I have tried almost all for PLF Non Free and I cant find one that works. I mistakenly typed urpmi.removemedia -a to see if I could fix the problem that way and found I could not. So, I did have to finally check MAIN and I ultimately found a server in Canada that worked. But nothing is working for PLF Non Free.

I went to Easy_Urpmi above and it said something about "Alway Add main". Is that really necessary? or can I just go straight to the PLA NON FREE stuff? when I select main and PLA non free, it tells me to type to different commands in the console as root? Or maybe I just dont understand this yet? If I can just check off the Non Free stuff and go from there that would be nice.

non-free? I have to pay for win32 codec?

I was trying to view a video with a *.wvx extention. It is provided to me via a weblink. It appears that linux does not handle these windows type applications too well. Is there a way to see these types of videos on Linux?

I am having trouble making flash work in firefox. I think that the problem is that the plugin is not were Firefox expects it to be and that I need to create a link to where it should be, but I dont remember how to do that. Can anyone help?

I was just wondering, where do I find the boot.iso? I checked on the Mandriva website and I cant find it.

I was wondering if there is a way to install Mandriva 2007 directly from 2006 over the network? If not, then is there a way to install 2007 using a boot.iso over the network? In either case I want to install 2007 over on top of 2006 since I have my /home directory on a separate partition.

I plug in my wi fi card only occasionally. Only when I am away from home and office. Otherwise I use the eth0. By the way, my comp hangs up on all of them, br0, eth0, wlan0, etc.

When I start up, I see that my computer hangs up at something called "br0". It stays there for along time,then says "FAILED" and goes to "eth0", then goes to "wlan0", etc. This takes forever to get through, and I was wondering if I could cut down my boot up time somehow? I know that Mandriva is searching for an internet connection, but sometimes I dont have one.
