  1. Be careful when replacing a mother board in a Dell. There was a time in the recent past when Dell was using special mother boards from Intel that had the power plugs wired specially for them.

The power plug is physically the same as a standard board, but some of the wires have been changed so that they are no longer compatible with regular mother boards. The power supplies were also rewired to be non-standard.

If you replace a Dell mother board with a standard one, and you do not also replace the power suupply, you run the risk of destroying your new mother board instantly.

    Be careful.

I do not know if they still do this, or what models have the issue. This information came out a couple of years ago.

    Do some research.

Call Dell before you risk a new mother board in your Dell.

Edit: Here is a link. I know nothing about this company, but it has information

    about the problem.

Edit again: Here is another link describing the problem

    Be careful!

ok..the motherboard doesn't even fit in the case and it has different memory slots than my previous memory...its going back anyways...Im gonna call dell because it seems like only theirs would really fit and have everything i need in there. Idk though. Oh and the Intel P4 2.8 ghz didn't fit in there either. What a mess. ah well ill just give dell a call.

  2. Ok. i just ordered a motherboard that looks similiar to the one i have. The reviews said it had an excellent BIOS and was great(It got 4 eggs on NewEgg.com)....Almost every reviewer said that it worked perfectly even when the overclocked their system. It was an Asus and it had 2 USB and 2 firewire so i thought that would be enough(considering i have 2 more at the front of the computer)...

here it is. It was 93.00 dollars.

  3. Don't know about the prices in the USA, but here in Europe you can have good inexpensive boards for about 50 Euros. Been building computers for about ten years now, and if I wre you, I should try to avoid ASrock and ECS. Sorry, but I've had to many bad boards with those. And it's a pain to get one returned for warranty.

My personal favorites, in that price-range are MSI and Asus. But hey, what's an opinion.

will my computer work like new after i install a new one??? like perfectly?

  4. A Dell check point error is a Dell bios failure. When you call them, they will walk you thru a proceedure that will verify this. The fix is a replacement of the motherboard, which is very expensive unless it is under warranty. Most Dells can accept a standard motherboard.

CRAp. dangit. Well, its not under warranty..and motherboards cost what 100 dollars?

  5. Don't know for sure, but I think that the bootloader from Dell is corrupted. Don't if they have one, never had a Dell before. But once had a Hewlett Packard Pentium 4 which had one. They use it in combination with a second partition on your hard drive, in case your system crashes. In that case you can restore you old configuration with that second partition which you can access from the bootloader.

But again, don't know for sure. I bought my HP like that, don't know if Dell uses that configuration also. Perhaps someone with a Dell copmuter can help you out on that issue.

i was using lILO and i doubt there is any bootloader(it is hard to get specs for those kinds of things it seems though)...i dunno. Doesn't dell have 24 hour service...because i remember a commercial where this guy was in bed and at 5 in the morning he called up dell and the dell guys is like "yes 24-7=365(or something like that)...maybe ill call them later. Will they fix it? because my sisters computer needed a motherboard once(it was the 600 dollar dell) and the guy came out and installed it. Maybe theyll do that for this one(if a motherboard is needed-or similiar part)...i hope it is cuse thats something i can go and buy a Frys (or other electronics stores).

  6. Nothing at all. The only changes(at all) made to this machine was the dualboot OSs. ok i got a new screen now when i load it up.. it says

Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS version 1.10 A01

    Copyright 1985-1988 Phoenix Technologies LTD.

    Copyright .>>....dell.........

    allright reserved.....

    Dell SYstem Dimension 8200

then(for the important part) it says

Alert! Previous attempts at booting this system have failed at checkpoint. For help in resolvi9ng this problem, please note this checkpoint and contact Dell Technical Support.

    Crap.(my words)

what to do..what to do. Will dell even listen if i tell them ive dualbooted it with Mandriva/Windows XP?/??

  7. Ok...i tried installing wine and immediatly when i began the download, Mandriva 2006 Froze..{of course} ... ok then it didn't even load the LILO bootloader. I turned it off to try again. it has the Dell(then the loading bar under it) then it has bios revision ______

ok...it boots up so slow and doesn't even get past midway point(on the BIOS loading). Whats the deal??? this is crazy.

How can i get my computer back up and running.. any help is appreciated.

  8. my mandriva 2006(free) version keeps freezing up after it loads and i open up an application. This happens nearly everytime and if it doesn't happen right after i boot it up, it eventually happens anyways. Is there anyway to fix this. Its really bothering me

    thanks.

edit: oh yeh and its not hardware related (because the clock does not move at all) and im dual booting with windows(in which windows does not freeze)....

  9. while the official upgrades from mandriva are labelled 1.0.6 on the outside they contain all patches from 1.0.7, it can be seen if you open about Mozilla Firefox it shows that it indeed is a 1.0.7:

    Mine shows:

    Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.10) Gecko/20050921 Firefox/1.0.7 Mandriva/1.0.6-16.1.20060mdk (2006.0)

only the rpm is still called 1.0.6 (yes this IS confusing)

no i did about firefox and it had 1.0.6 there..not 1.0.7

i have Easy-Urpmi installed also...so if you could tell me how to upgrade and how to install thunderbird also..thanks

  10. Im wondering how to upgrade firefox. it doesn't have the little red/green thing near the top like the windows version does to upgrade. I went on the site and downloaded the file and i got the tar.gz file and i was wondering how to upgrade from this. Thanks.

  11. i understand its compatible, but i simply cannot find the driver for it on the list. I can't get into my windows partition through linux so i cannot find it using <the program that does that-forgot the name>....When i find a driver that is atleast compatible w/ the brand(broadcom), i highlight it and click next and then it brings me to the exact same screen i had <where it asked to choose from a list or get one from windows>....im not exactly sure of the problem. any help is appreciated

  12. in mandriva control center under hardware : then under ethernetcards...it has 2 cards. The top one is the one i want to use, but icannot find the driver for it. it is the:

    BCM94306 802.11 g NIC

im pretty sure it was something along the lines of a linksys speed booster. But i am not sure. any help is appreciated.
