  1. AHH how do i stop this from happening it is a message not just once but hundreds of times..

devfs_mk_dev: could not append to parent for <NULL>108

I have set devfs=nomount in lilo.conf and run it but it has no affect..

I have googled and found no answer to this either..

  2. I will give you a few different ways..

First go to the run menu and type in kdesu kwrite

    then open the file /etc/samba/smb.conf

if you are in a console you could try the following

    su

then type in the root password then use your favorite editor

the other option is using sudo

  3. I've just upgraded my old Thinkpad to 2006 and something is very wrong.  Removing kat knocked by CPU from 100% down to 50%, but that's not enough.  To click a button I move my mouse, then stop and wait to see where the cursor lands, and repeat, until I'm finally pointing where I want to.

Is there anything else I should rid my system of?  When kded was consuming a lot of resources, how did you deduce that kat was the real problem?

I've been using Mandrake for about five years (and paying to do so) but that may be coming to an end.

Did you completely remove kat.. if not it can i noticed start up also under other users you may have set..

    Example.. Logged on a me..

Start a konsole log on a someone else start kate, kwrite something connected to kde then you will see all this extra stuff occuring.. KAT has stared catalogueing for the other user.. Just remove the Default DB's for each user and you will have no more problems with it..

I find it faster and more responsive than the 9 versions and 10 versions..

  4. Question: Does Mandrake have a Control Panel similar as Windows?

Could not find any info on my 2 harddrives in Mandrake.Where is that info visible?.

When I turn my computer on,before loading Mandrake, the two hard drives, sizes and ID's are reflected

Tried to download Real-One  audio software in order to listen to webradio,NPR audio etc, etc. however Mandrake will not save my downloads anywhere?

Could not find my DVD burner in Mandrake. I like to load my Nero 6 into Mandrake.

I am connected to Earthlink Broadband and have no problem getting on the Net. I am aware that I have to take it one step at a time . These for now are the most visible problems. Please Help,Thanks

First question mcc (Mandrake control center)

type mcc in the run command or find the menu item configure your computer

What browser are you using it should be saving the item but you just cant see it yet..

You could try this from the command line (Konsole) find -name *Logo* remember linux is case sensitive.. *Logo* is looking for the file called something Logo something

Lots of different Burners available go to mcc install software. select descriptions and type in burner, gives you a choice..

  5. it seems that every laptop is built in China with unreliable Chinese components, so only the brands that actually have high specifications have better than average failure rates.

What a generalization If you look at the inside of most of the laptops today you will notice the small component size, IF they do not add enough packing around these item to stop the chassis from bending and twisting. Even from environmental bending(Heating and cooling)

Go with a company that provides lots of R&D to the laptop and not flashy boxes.. And large warantee. (Screen mainly)

It is not the componets that fail it is that the components are placed in an environment they should not be in.. (Called cost savings and lack to testing..)

  6. I'm not touching MDV2006 for half a year at least,

But that is exactly what we used to say about the new windows versions..

Were not upgrading until the product settles down..

I don't see that as a negative, more of a correct move for most people. Let the Others check the version out now and then i will upgrade when i feel i need the extra options..

I am actually using 2006 now and really happy with its performance on my laptop..

  7. Something has changed between Rc2 and Rc3 that is not compatable with the

    i810 graphics on my computer.

Did you check the file /var/log/messages for anything special about the fault?

Sounds like the X is having a problem

    try

    tail /var/log/messages

    for the last 10 entries..

Can use the CD in recovery mode to look at the files and read the errors if you really cannot get a console..

  8. But yes my system load is high. And if I let it sit for a while and I open System Guard the memory usage is all 888888888.

Is it reading the information at all..

I have only seen this when the KDE SYS guard has no information.

have a look at kat.. it maybe using all of your resources.. when Idle..

From experience it starts in your home directory and if you are like me just too many files to catalog in one chunk i think..

I broke it down into the directories i really wanted Kat'ed not the entire HOME directory..

  9. loved the new article.. Just loading the Hugin now.. I have a heap of photos o had to do more manually in Gimp..

The only application i need in KDE now is one which is like GNUCash, I really dislike the display, but for functionality i cant go past it..

I see all these people having problems i am running the Xorg and works fine no crashes or bugs. Running it on a Compaq Evo N1000v the ALSA is much better and now i have full configuration of my Sound card 3D affects and all..

They have really excelled with this package..

Thanks once again for the Hugin..
