  1. http://www.kingcountyjournal.com/sited/sto...ory/html/138702 This is nice: How many of RH's were exploited as bad as security in Windows? This is a question, I'm not makeing fun of M$. I know the company I work for got nailed by every single virus that came out last year for windows, killing desktop's and servers. The Unix servers seemed to keep running though?
  2. http://www.linuxcompatible.org/story20983.html Anyone know what advantage the Workstation has over regular RHL 9 or Severn????
  3. Does that mean they wont have ebuilds? What are there pre-built binaries considered to be?
  4. Like I said early on, they were running it, that's how I got started in this silly thread. Then I said I DOUBT they still are. That's it. I really don't CARE if they are or if they aren't. My only reason for jumping in here was to PROVE that they did at one time use it for SEVERAl years as the article from a M$ spokensmen pointed out. The examples weren't all that bad, I was simply IMPLYING that why would M$ tell there client's yes we use *nix for some of our internal production enviroments, but hey check out our 2k3 server product. Don't worry why were not useing it. That in a nutshell is why I brought up RH, how could they sell there product to corporations if they are using someone else's. The example might have been a little off, but I figured you were a smart enough kid to pick up on it. I got your silly little boy right here
  5. I'm not sure, I'm wondering the same thing?? In any case, I imagin if you buy the Athlon addition it will probably be pretty optimized. But a lot of US here are TWEAKERS and we can't help ourselves, we like to push it until we break it!
  6. Haven't had a chance again, I started to but then I had to sleep. Here is a decent tutoral from Madpenguin. http://www.madpenguin.org/article.php?sid=...7&mode=&order=0 Basically all you need to do anymore with a 2.6 kernel is the following: #> ln -s /usr/src/linux-2.6.0-test1 /usr/src/linux #> make mrproper #> make clean #> make xconfig #> make bzImage #> make modules #> make modules_install #> cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz #> cp System.map /boot #> cp .config /boot/config #> /sbin/lilo If your using GRUB, substitue that last step. Now that your kernel parameters are all set, it's time to move on with the rest of the compilation process. The next step is to build the kernel.... what? I know that made you stop and think.... aren't we supposed to 'make dep'? Nope. With the inception of the 2.6 series kernel, there is no need for the make dep command anymore. You skip that step entirely and move on to the kernel image and modules... You will probably need an updated MODUTILS package too.
  7. You could alway's re-emerge your system with the settings you want afterwards. I've done that building from stage3 so I could have it up faster! Wouldn't that defeat the object of having a CD? You'd have to download all the sources. The ideal would be the source for everything in portage on a collection of CDs. So I can install from stage one without needinga fast internet connection Why wouldn't the CD's have the sources? Do you think they will be RPMS or something??? I don't see why you couldn't move the src from the cd's to /usr/portage and if you wanted to rebuild with differnet optimiztions you could. As long as you don't emerge sync it will still think everything is the same. Am I wrong?
  8. just because it's a different server doesn't mean it doesn't count ;-). Yes, they are using FreeBSD somewhere, but my point was simply that they aren't using it everywhere... We like to pick on MS a lot but the fact remains that they are an IT corporation just like others, and they are going to us what works. If that's FreeBSD, so be it! :-P And maybe they aren't hiding behind smoke and mirrors, maybe they just know that FreeBSD is good for the internal high-demand systems. Please point out sometime where they said "we only use our own products to run our networks", then we can talk about smoke and mirrors ;-) Do you really think that M$ would admit to still using any type of Unix in house for a production enviroment. Yes they "rented" part of SCO's code which I believe was to work on there Unix for Win tools (could be wrong) but they would never admit to using anything but Windows Servers in house for production systems. That would be like RH saying there workers in N.C. use Windows for there desktops. I doubt it! Or Linus using Windows with Linux inside vmware to do development work on his kernel. All-in-all M$ has a bad product and I for one don't need it.
  9. I was simply saying they DID in the PAST, not KNOW!
  10. As this suggest from the register link I posted.
  11. This is from 2001 http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/28/23348.html This was from 99 http://www.geocrawler.com/archives/3/151/1...99/8/0/2593151/ See, no FUD
  12. In the past hotmail. did run on FreeBSD! M$ might have changed it now, but they were running in on Fbsd.
  13. Last I checked x86 isn't free. SPARC is free, but not the x86 version. At the worst though it's only around $20, not bad I run a beta of it under vmware. But I like my sparc version.
  14. Anyone try Thunderbird(mail)? Thunderbird is a Mail-News client meant to compliment the Mozilla Firebird. Thunderbird has support for IMAP, POP3, NNTP, multiple accounts, powerful filters, spell checking and a smart junk mail filter. Thunderbird is now built with Xft enabled and is my prefered Email program. http://www.mozilla.org/projects/thunderbird/ I also like firebird. **side note** I've used opera, and I didn't care for it.
  15. This guide should come in handy to many people. http://mandrakeuser.cjb.net/
  16. I know for a fact that emergeing KDE takes much longer than Gnome, so it wont be that bad. I use Gnome mainly! It feels faster and is PERDIER!
  17. NOpe, I'm not very sociable in public arena's. I just hang out in forums with GEEKS like you all!
  18. Have you tried this page? http://docs.zaurus.com/index.php?id=lc_mandrake
  19. There instructions are really good, makes it pretty easy and the froum is pretty loaded with help and several people at the MUB have used/use it. So we could all get you going. phunni You could alway's re-emerge your system with the settings you want afterwards. I've done that building from stage3 so I could have it up faster!

    NVIDIA driver

Ah, I'm in idiot, I don't know if I ever noticed you saying that, I just thought you couldn't get it to work. Try going to an old driver like 4191 or 4349 that might keep those lookup demons away  http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_di...display_archive

Alienware  If I had the money I would get one of those with the crazy blue! Or a new G5 17" laptop if they come out? "If I had the money" = There in lies the problem, I have none :( I have 6 box's at home now, though and my wife says it's enough. 1 is her's so I don't touch it 1 is a work laptop that just sit's there since I have a few box's at work. 1 is a p200 old! 1 well you see my specs bellow 1 SparcStation 1 HP-UX station (180) But the greedy man insid e me alway's wants more  Dual Opteron box would be a nice additon with that crazy blue case I posted yesterday! Stupid money, alway's getting in the way with realality!
  22. If you can download free images(if avaliable) you will! I know you. :P
  23. First I must say it's not that hard to install and second, if they have pre-built CD's, it is possible they have made the install a little more streamlined for those that are scared of using something like gentoo or debian. I don't know that for sure, but I'm guessing they are going to try and make it easyier to install. I've used 1.2, 1.3(didn't last long) & 1.4 and one of them came with pre-built kde, gnome, mozilla & OOo I think?? So that is something they have been developing for sometime now. Besides that, I know some dial-up users I believe will give it a try because they have wanted to use it, but didn't want to go through a long process for downloading everything. I have no problem starting from a stage1 install, but heck I might buy a Athlon & i686 just so I have them laying around if I want to though them down fast. Although I'm hoping they have them for FREE on ibiblio and I will go that route. <I have to be cheap sometimes>
  24. I prefer Read The Manual, others use a different syntac. Thanks for the link bvc.
  25. Tried that. Currently I'm in SuSE because I had to get some work done and will go back this weekend and play with it. Thanks you for your suggestions. :D
