  1. Well, I tried "ln -s /usr/bin/mpeg2enc /usr/bin/mpeg2encode" and was close but no cigars. I get: [root@localhost ImageRecording]# convert *.jpg test3.mpg **ERROR: [mpeg2encode] Output file name (-o option) is required! Seems the convert program does not pass the appropriate options to mpeg2enc. I'm not sure what to do about this -- perhaps just wait for 2008.1 and see if stuff is fixed then. Sigh.......
  2. Ah, didn't realize that it was mpeg2enc that I needed instead of mpeg2encode. I'll see if I have it, and if so try the symlink. Thanks
  3. That is a bit dated though. The message was posted in April of 2004. I didn't have this problem with Mandriva 2007.* I may have had to install some encoder/decoder, but if so, I simply don't remember what it was.
  4. Well, I have mjpegtools, but still no mpeg2encode as the following attests. [root@localhost rvd]# urpmi mjpegtools Package mjpegtools-1.9.0-0.rc2.3mdv2008.0.i586 is already installed [root@localhost rvd]# updatedb [root@localhost rvd]# locate mpeg2encode [root@localhost rvd]# When I try the following: [rvd@localhost ImageRecording]$ convert *.jpg test.mpg I get: sh: mpeg2encode: command not found convert: Delegate failed `"mpeg2encode" "%i" "%o"'. [rvd@localhost ImageRecording]$ Any more ideas?
  5. I am using convert from imagemagic. I thought I had mjpegtools installed, but maybe not. I'll have to check when I get back home. Thanks for the responses. I'll let you know.
  6. I've been trying to convert jpg images to an mpg using "convert *.jpg test.mpg" but it fails looking for "mpeg2encode". Anybody know an rpm that contains this item?

    KDE4

The many comments listed in the post above is what makes me worried. There was no mention of keeping the old Kmenu as an option, and many of the things people did not like about kickoff didn't seem to be adequately addressed as far as I could see. I wouldn't mind dolphin if the things it can't do could still be done by konqueror. My cause for concern was that it was said above that konqueror would use the same engine. Therefore, if dolphin can't do something, presumably konqueror wouldn't be able to do it either. If konqueror retained its old functionality then I would have no problem.

    KDE4

I think that Kickoff menu might keep me from using kde4 -- especially if they don't provide a way to use a standard Kmenu. I didn't realize that konqueror was going to use the dolphin engine. I thought I could just choose to use konqueror as the file manager and then wouldn't lose functionality. If that is not the case, that is another reason I might have to stick with what I've got. If mandriva 2008.1 ships with kde4, I might have to end up having to pass on it, until the above two items are handled with some future version of kde.
  9. I did: urpmi kernel-desktop-devel-2.6.22.9-2mdv That didn't make the cams work, even after a reboot, so I tried a urpme/urpmi of dkms-gspcav1 and still no joy. I rebooted again with the previous kernel and again did a urpme/urpmi of dkms-gspcav1 and they still don't work. So, now I am again on the latest kernel again. I figure if the cams are not going to work on either kernel anyway, then I might as well be on the latest one. Anyway, when I did a urpme of kernel-desktop-devel-2.6.22.9-2mdv and instead a urpmi of urpmi kernel-desktop-devel-latest it worked. Doesn't make sense to me, but that is the way it is. I do wish that they would default kernel upgrades to unchecked to make it less likely that the kernel will get upgraded by accident.
  10. I notice that my 2008.0 updates yesterday included a kernel update. My cams today (driver: dkms-gspcav1) don't work. Do I just need to reinstall the driver or is anything else required?
  11. Thanks. Amarok asks where the device is mounted. It is also unable to autodetect the device. One is supposed to be able to use it to manage an iPod or Zen player, but as far as I can tell it can't. It seems to be just a bloated music player. Also, the Zen V Plus can be partitioned so that you can use it to transfer data files. I wonder how you access the data files if you can't mount the partition.
  12. When I attach the device I get the following lines in dmesg: usb 4-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 usb 4-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice By the way, this is an MTP device, if that is of any significance.
  13. I'm trying to use Amarok to access my Creative Zen V Plus. Instructions say "Libmtp relies on your user being able to do usb operations. If you have installed libmtp yourself, be sure to read the sections on Hotplugging and Udev in the INSTALL file. Amarok will not work with MTP if you do not have the correct permissions on the MTP device." How do I tell if the correct permissions are set?
  14. It uses MTP, and doesn't show up in either /mnt or /media. I've read some stuff about Amarok, and have a list of things to try.
  15. I have been able to load music onto the device using gnomad2. gnomad2 seems to use it without its having been mounted. Not sure how it does this magic. However, if I ever want to just copy some data to the player, kind of using it as a flash drive, I still need to find a way to mount it. I just don't know what device it is in /dev I'll look at dmesg when I get home.
  16. Autodetect says that it sees no devices. When I go to Add Devic, it wants me to tell it the mount point. Well, I don't know what the mount point is, so I can't tell Amarok. I do see the device with lsusb: Bus 001 Device 011: ID 041e:4152 Creative Technology, Ltd Now, how do I go about mounting it somewhere?
  17. When using Mandriva 2008.0, I notice that when I connect my iPod nano to the usb port, a dialog box comes up asking me if I want to view the directory etc, and mounts the device. However, when I connect my Creative Zen V Plus mp3 player, nothing seems to happen. How would I go about mounting it?
  18. It turns out that loading any music onto the iPod that did not originate from iTunes is intentionally blocked by Apple. There has been a hack to get around this, but the hack seems to be no longer available. I've already given the iPod away. Sigh.... It and related items were just a bit under $300. I got a Creative Zen V Plus this morning, with 8 GB. Now I am trying to figure out how to get music onto it. When I plug it into a USB port, I don't get a mounting notification like I did with the iPod. What happened to the "good old days" when you could just copy music files to the device just like it was a disk drive, without requiring all types of bizarre mp3 software on the computer.? I still don't see how to get music onto this device, but I guess this should be another thread.
  19. I am trying to use gtkpod to load music into a new third generation ipod nano with model number MB255LL. This model is not listed in gtkpod in the dropdown list box, so I just entered it into the field. The ipod knows that something is occupying 1.4 GB, but says I have no music. If I look at the mount point in /media/ipod I see the music and can double click on an item and hear it. Also the music appears in gktpod and can also be played. It is just that the ipod itself doesn't seem to know that the music has been loaded onto its system. I also can't see anyway to clear the stuff since it doesn't know it is there. I hope this doesn't turn out to be yet another expensive paperweight, like my last two webcams. :( Any ideas? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  20. Is there a USB Video Class (UVC for short) driver for 2008.0? I thought I read that the kernel was supposed to be UVC compliant, but I can't get a Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 to work which needs this driver. This will be the second $100+ cam I've bought in the past week that I can't get to work.
  21. I'm not at home at the moment, but the Device Id is 0x4045 ?
  22. Anybody know what driver is needed for the Creative Live! Cam Voice webcam?
  23. The author of btnx, a great program that lets one map keyboard keystroke combinations or applications to the mouse buttons on more exotic mice (i.e. Logitech MX Revolution) wrote the program for Ubuntu. His execution script doesn't quite work for Mandriva (2008.0). The forum thread is here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=455656 The home page for btnx is here: http://ollisalonen.com/btnx/ When I indicated that it didn't work right in Mandriva, he responded as follows: "The service script in /etc/init.d/btnx is made from a Debian skeleton script. It apparently makes calls that are Debian (or Debian-based distros, ie Ubuntu) specific. I will have to change this to make it compatible with other distros. Mandriva has start-stop-daemon, right?" I'm not really sure what he is asking. How should I respond to him? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  24. Got the issues resolved. My problems were that various applications were looking for Ariel and Verdana which weren't on the system. So, I got some good info from the chat group. I downloaded msttcorefonts-bootstrap-0.1-4brs.noarch.rpm and then did a urpmi on it and all is well. This downloads and installs the fonts.
  25. Thanks. What files are they in. Do I do "urpmi MSTTCoreFonts" ?
