  1. Seems 2009.0 doesn't realize that I have a SoundBlaster card. I had no problems with the 2008.1 install. Any idea how to proceed? The speaker icon in the system tray has a red "x" next to it. Something said to run alsaconf or sndconfig which I did. Now what?

  2. Ok, I finally got around to installing 2009.0. (The Chicago Marathon had gotten in the way. I'm still sore.) So, I installed from my downloaded file and attempted a new install just keeping my home directory. It was a nightmare. Somehow, after the install, I no longer had any of the data in my home directory. Plus, I couldn't do anything with this 4.1 KDE. It was almost like I was in a new OS and didn't know how to do anything.

So, I restored my system from backups and this time went and just did an upgrade. To my surprise I find that I have installed the Free version. It seems I had downloaded and burned to dvd the wrong version. Sigh....

Don't have a clue how I did that. Anyway, so now the question is how to upgrade from Free to PowerPack. Do I have to download the 4.4 GB PowerPack version and then do another upgrade from the dvd I create? With the Free version I haven't even figured out how to get my secondary monitor working because I haven't figured out how to download the nvidia-settings program which I believe comes with some of the nvidia drivers.

There is still bizarre stuff happening though. When I attempt to open a command window in Konqueror I get a bunch of other garbage windows open. Plus, I can't seem to open Konqueror in supervisor mode any more. But, I'll tackle these after I at least get the right version installed.

  3. Hmmm. I'll have to check this. I think my problems have been due to devices not always coming up on the same /dev/videoX

I have two webcams that are usb attached. One is usb 1.0 and the other is usb 2.0, so there are two different programs that are used to get snapshots and to publish them to my web page. Originally I think that the usb 2.0 cam came up on video0 and the usb 1.0 cam came up on video1. But I don't think they always come up the same way, and when the order is reversed the applications to get the snapshots don't work.

I have to specify the correct videoX as an input parameter to the programs.

  4. Well, helping to confuse the issue is that I'm not real sure about Garmin software either.

Anyway, at the moment, it seems to work as long as I have the device plugged in when I bring up the system. I only got WinXP because of the Garmin stuff, so I could load new drivers into the devices, and also use their Training Center. I was able to download a Runner's World marathon training schedule into the Garmin Training Center, and then download that schedule into my Garmin Forerunner 305 gps watch. Unfortunately, Garmin doesn't know how to spell Linux. Sigh.....

I also want to be able to keep my Garmin Nuvi 350 (car gps device) updated.

I do notice that the entry I added to /etc/fstab causes a long pause in the boot process. It stops at that instruction for a good minute. That is annoying. I wonder if there is anyway to access usb from the WinXP guest without that entry.

I'll post back if I find out anything new.

  5. I am running 1.6.2 of VirtualBox non OSE version and have a difficulty accessing USB devices. I find that I can only access the device in the WinXP guest if I have had the usb device plugged in before I booted the system.

I see a bug that essentially says the same thing:

Does anyone else still have this problem, or is it supposed to have been fixed?

  6. Can anyone recommend any forum hosting software that allows member-only posting, author-only editing of a post and anonymous posting (unless poster wishes otherwise)? My daughter wants me to put something together for her hockey league. Sigh.....

    :help:

  7. Well, it looks like I'll be taking this one back. According to tech support, they don't think it can do scanning in Linux and don't think it ever will. I don't know if that is true or not, but if their tech support has that attitude, then I don't think I want it anyway.

  8. I'm looking for a printer recommendation. This is for multi function (scanning, copying, printing, faxing) and color. A friend recommended the Epson brand saying that they had a good history of being Linux friendly.

Any other ideas, or any particular Epson recommendations?

  9. You know, every time Mysti is bored she goes about changing the board. This time she has decided to put her energies toward a new board. I'm beginning to think that maybe it is time for her to have kids, just to keep her occupied. :P

  10. SilverSurfer60:

You're right, that is definitely odd. At least there is the workaround as indicated in this thread. It is a nuisance though.

    I am currently using 2.6.24.4-desktop-1mnb.

I am trying KDE_FORK_SLAVES=true as an environment variable. So far that doesn't seem to break anything else. (I don't use kmail as mentioned above.) If it does I'll have to remove it.

  11. I also found that Compiz with dual monitors is a pain in the back side. Hopefully in the future it will be worked out.

??? I use compiz-fusion on Mandriva 2008.1 (as I had on Mandriva 2008.0) with dual monitors and it works great. I've used the Cube, but generally use the Wall with 9 virtual desktops. I can do stuff much faster than I can without compiz-fusion.

  12. I have the same problem with compiz-fusion. No clue so far. I'm waiting for the repositories to be there so I can do a full update and also install emerald which I think is being referenced by cf but which is not installed. I also need to install the theme manager.
