  1. Greetings there,

Yes, the 3D stuff will work best with ATI's proprietary drivers, rather than the Linux drivers. So 3D would explain the issue, if it were running with the Linux drivers. But 2D should be fine. Since you are using a CRT, I think that a higher refresh would be best. While 60 is good for a flat panel, I prefer anything above 70 for a CRT. (Actually, I run 85!) I have a laptop that is running a SiS760GX video section, and it breaks in windows for no reason, but rarely in Linux, although it has gone out in Linux. In my case, it is simply a bad video section. As long as I keep the laptop cool, it works. I think re-seating the video card is the best solution; and then replace the video card if there is no improvement.

My monitor's refresh rate is set to 80 and i can not seem to change that.

Is there a utility with which i can tweak that too?

I could only see it in the GUI mode, but with no option to change it.

    Thanks,

    rohit.

  2. Greetings there,

i'll get back with the results of reseating the graphics card.

I did remove and insert the graphics card, but still the refreshing is still not taking place as expected.

It still givs that distorted screen. So at times i have to take a window with a white back ground and do a sweep of the screen with that and i kinda get an extended time to work :P

Is there anything else that can try before going on and buying new hardware?

    Thanks,

    rohit.

  3. Greetings there,

You might have a hardware issue. Do you feel comfortable opening up your computer and reseating your video card?

Yes, i will just do it and respond back :-)

Would you please state what hardware you are using? Type of video card?

The details of the hardware are as follows:

    Monitor: IBM G72 17 inches.

    Graphics card: Radeon VE 64MB

Also in XFdrake there were 3 options relating to Radeon

    1.Radeon-fbdev

    2.Radeon-vesa

    3.Radeon fglrx

(i might not be correctly remembering the exact second names associated with Radeon)

I had the fglrx selected by default, i tried the other two option, but had to finally settle with the fglrx driver.

The resolution that i had selected were 1024x768 16bpp.

During the console XFdrake, i only got the 16bpp option but when logged in the GUI mode, i could see the 24 bpp option too.

Linux software does not "go corrupt" like a Microsoft windows system. What you are describing is indeed an indication of a hardware problem. But more specifics would be helpful.

I firmly do believe that :-)

Actually i had an argument with the hardware guy who said that its a resolution problem and not the monitor going bust.

But when he connected the monitor to another system, i had to keep mum and nod to his statement :-(

So could it be the graphics card ?

i'll get back with the results of reseating the graphics card.

    Thanks,

    rohit.

  4. Greetings there,

    <update>

The good news is i tried a few combinations for the monitor and it seems to work

    Thanks agaiin :)

    </update>

The happiness lasted only a couple of hours...

After an hour or so of work on the system, i get this

    What next can i do?

    Thanks,

    rohit

  5. Greetings there,

As root run this from the command line:

    XFdrake

Well thanks for the awesome tip, as i did not knew the tool from command line to get to change the resolution :-)

I did try to configure the resolution to the values that i think the monitor supports.

i did this from the failsafe mode as in other two modes(normal and nonfb) i can not see the command line even.

here are pics of what i could do and see...

The XFdrake screen: here looks distorted too...

The post startup messages login screen: here

The login screen starts to look like this just after the mouse with a revolving curve comes and then this screen shows :-(

kindly help what next should i do?

  6. Greetings there,

My desktop has mandriva installed on it.Some how its resolution has gone corrupt(the hardware guy said so).I got my monitor checked on another system, where it works perfectly fine.

Could someone tell me a way to rework the resolution settings and get to see the normal working state.

Although spring is out, i could upgrade, but i'm wanting to solve this trouble and then upgrade :-)

    Thanks,

    rohit.

    <edit>

big typo, i own my success to 2007.0 :-), wrote 2006.0 instead.

it has been long time since i faced an issue on mandriva! ;-)

  7. Greetings there,

    This is little off topic.

I have had my Dlink wireless adsl router working fine with a notebook and a desktop.

I had posted of a recent slowed boot up process on mandriva(desktop) here:[https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=40439]

So now, mandriva recognises my lan card, for the reason that when i do

     ifup eth0

i get an error as follows:

Determining IP information for eth0... failed; no link present. Check cable?

So i did as directed, i got the cables checked(three of them) and still i am unable to get the connection.

The NIC is DLink's DFE 530 TX+ RTL8139 based card and is seen in lspci output as well as mcc gui mode.

My wireless lan is working fine.

Also no lights are lit either on the nic's side or the router's side when i connect through the wire.

Kindly help me solve the problem.

    thanks,

    rohit

i can make very little sense out of it!

    thanks,

  9. Greetings there,

i am having this strange new problem on mandriva 2007 (Free).

When i press enter after giving in the login credentials, the screen stalls for around 3-4 minutes. untill the KDE loading screen shows up.

i tried to go to the text booting screen( ALT+CTRL+1), there too the last entry loaded [OK], after constant staring for 3-4 minutes on that screen i was able to see that the hal daemon tried to load up then in a matter of microseconds, the screen flushed to the text login(remember i came to this screen).

So i did the ALT+CTRL+7 to go to the graphics mode, there i see the KDE loading screen.

Can anyone help me as to what could cause this problem?

It is not a post install problem, i have had this running for around 1 month or so..

    kindly help.

    thanks,

    rohit.

  10. Greetings there,

Thanks to all for helping me in getting back all my previous usenames! :-)

But there is jus one problem, my most used login is facing the following problem when i try to log into it..

xterm: Can't execvp /usr/X11R6/bin/luit: No such file or directory

    xterm: cannot support your locale

    [username@localhost]$

I am left with no choice to do a CONTROL+D!

So what should i do further...

    <edit>

So when i got that on a console, i did

    [username@localhost]$startkde &

After that when i try to close the console, kde also closes and i am taken back to the login screen.

    </edit>

    thanks,

    rohit.

  11. Greetings there,

I had a hard disk snag that made mandriva 2007.0 crash!

So i reinstalled 2007.0 and rewrote / and /usr the /home partition was left untouched.

So post install, when i try to login using the old existing users on /home/<username>, i get a login fail screen.

The /home directory is exixsting there, is there a way to map the old users and their sruff to the new install somehow?

    thanks,

    rohit.

    i had downloaded python-opengl drivers.

i have an ATI graphics card with the following description:

    "Description: ?Radeon VE/7000 QY (AGP/PCI)"

    from mcc.

Please help me configure blender on mandriva.

    thanks,

    rohit.

  13. Helo there,

Hm. The entries look good - at first. :-)

    B) There's a trailing space character following one of the last digits.

(You should also use a "real" hostname.)

That was the cause of the problem!,yes a trailing blank space at the end.

Though thanks to ian too for a sure shot fix thru cli

I guess i'll check twice now when i say the following:

Well trust me i am entering the correct 1.2.3.4 format value...

    :wall:

    OT:significance of 'real' hostname!?

    thanks,

    rohit.

  14. Hello there,

    A) Yeah, i'd love if my system took me straight to the login prompt after i press the power button to start the OS,like a television.

B ) Also a file system that keeps things intact in case of power failure. i had to reinstall mandriva due to a bad shutdown and e2fsck errors!

    C) Wish there is more consistency among linux distro's...

    edit :

    B + ) == B) heh!

    rohit.

  15. Hi there,

Hmm, mozilla-firefox takes 2.6% of the CPU and 6% of memory... Did you run anything in firefox (flash or movie?). I don't see firefox in my list of top applications at all. Also, that group of kde apps (artsd, kicker, kded, kwin, kmix, knotify). Do you really need all of them to run? AFAIK, knotify is completely useless, but takes a lot of resources. Try stopping it. Same is with kmix - unless you use it, remnove it from the system tray.

I do't know why mozilla was up there... i was using the browser for just reading mails and MUB, for around an hour that's all..

Also what do these kde utilities do... i mean i could not find kmix in my system's tray... any one place where i could know in more detail what these are and remove them accordingly!

    edit:

ok i know now kmix is the volume manager, but i need it always as the pcm2 setting of that tool is always set to low when i start the system..so i'll need to keep that to reset that vaule otherwise i do not get good sound on the speaker..

PS:am i going Off Track of the original problem!? ;-)

    thanks,

    rohit.

  16. Greetings there,

Well i guess i am not running kat(the kde search tool!?),but how can i confirm that i am not running it....

  17. Greetings there,

This problem is mandriva specefic(have't tried with other distros)..

my hard disk generates continuous sounds, similar to the ones at the time of system boot up when the hard disks are detected by the system bios.

The frequency is random, at times, it comes when the mandriva boots up or it may never come up in a session!

This lasts atmost two minutes or until i run the following command:

    [root@localhost rohitsz]# hddtemp /dev/hda
    /dev/hda: ST340810A: 47°C
    [root@localhost rohitsz]#

After that the sound stops immediately.

Its strange because i have a dual boot system with win98 and such sound are *never* heard there...

My drive details are as follows:

    Identification

    Vendor: ?Seagate Technology

    Model: ?40810A

    Media class: ?hd

    Bus identification

    Device ID: ?0

    Connection

    Bus: ?ide

    Channel: ?primary

    Device

    Old device file: ?/dev/hda

    New devfs device: ?/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc

    Partitions

    Primary partitions: ?1 (hda1)

    Extended partitions: ?4 (hda5, hda6, hda7, hda8)

    Misc

    Disk controller: ?0

    Geometry: ?4865/255/63 (CHS)

    I have two such drives.

any help, as to what i need to do to get over this problem!?

    thanks,

    rohit.

  18. Greetings there,

i used drakconnect to config my broadband connection...

in the page where it asks for localhost/dns 1/dns 2/dns 3/search domain and default gateway...

when i press the next, it prompts me to enter the dns values in 1.2.3.4 format..

beleive me, i am writing the dns values in the same format..

only when i remove the dns 2 value, it allows me to proceed...

what could be the problem there...?

i have not tried that connection yet.. but could there be any adverse effects on my connection due to a missing dns entry?

    thanks,

    rohit.

  19. Hi ian,

i've been thru your post to realise that i have missed the following in some order or the other..

    make
    make modules_install
    make install

So i'll do the things in order as i could not find the new initrd.img that related to the newly compiled kernel.

Also does mandriva really put so many patches such that it is hard to build a custom kernel on their distro?

    Why or how?

I just want to see how the kernel compilation process takes place, add a module to it remove it and just get the feel of it.. using the kernel compiled by me for daily use is not my objective, but i'll see if anything can be got out of it.. :-)

    thanks,

    rohit.

  20. Hi,

Taking your feature request one by one w.r.t DLink ADSL G604T Wireless Router

    A:Printserver is i guess a more of a LAN issue,correct me if i am wrong :-)

    B:This is 802.11 b/g compatible

C:It suppoorts SSID broadcast and WPA

    D:It supports MAC filtering too

E:It has NAT & firewall embedded in it.

    F:Price INR 4000(3 months ago)

I guess it will be priced well low in US/EUROPE.. just my guess.

PS: the only problem i am having with it is configuring port forwarding... but i guess that's the lack of effort on my side than the router ;-)

    thanks,

    rohit.

  21. Greetings there,

Today i gave a try to compiling the kernel on mandriva.(though still not successful)

So all things are going ok with a couple of questions and doubts...

Q1: Why does't mandriva have its kernel source in /usr/src/linux ?

Q2: Are "make zImage" or "make bzImage" fixed commands... i tried "make my_kernel" but it failed, i don know why?

Q3: How to get an initrd.img file for the kernel that is compiled?

Q4: Is there any other file i need except the bzImage,initrd.img,System.map?

So my compilation is not a success yet, but looking forward to answers to the above questions.

Still a n00b with the kernel!

    thanks,

    rohit.

  22. Greetings there,

While i was installing mandriva le 2006 on couple of systems, i faced a strange problem on a system where after the first login, both KDE and GNOME reported a crash so it took me back to the login screen, where again i was greeted with the same error!

So i logged in with IceWM and atleast i got thru to the desktop.

From there i tried to uninstall KDE and GNOME, but due to some dependencies,it removed the iceWM too.

So when i rebooted, i was taken to the console to login, so i tried "startx", it returned with an error again.

i did urpmi icewm-light and urpmi kdebase, but i still could not get a GUI mode on mandriva...

    what could be the problem!?

    thanks,

    rohit.
