  1. Hi ian,

What's the contents of /etc/resolv.conf? Does it have a valid DNS Server listed?

It has the entry as follows:

    nameserver <IP Address>

I changed the address manually and restarted /etc/init.d/network but my changes were overwritten, so still no success!

    rohit.

  2. Hi ian,

Check for link lights on the cable connection from your computer to the router to see if there are activity lights. If there are none, then there is no connection from the machine to the router.

Well all that is done and checked.

To my(and all) surprise, the network icon is showing connected now, but the problem now is no web browser is able to open up any website, although I can ping the linux box from another system and the other way round too...

I can also ping my ISP gateway successfully.

I tried firefox, konqueror, flock, opera and lynx.

None of them are able to connect to any website!

    pleae help!

    rohit.

Another surprise: When I created the connection through the GUI, it did not comeup in the right-click menu of the network-icon. I had to do an

    ifup eth0

    from console.

Any thing on the DCOP server? Should I look at it at all?

    thanks,

  4. Hi,

First a bit of history: I have been for past couple of days trying to configure VPN client to work at home system. No success has been achieved on that front.

So today, I wanted to remove those VPN network interfaces. I had three of them (in order from latest to oldest): ppp0,tun0,eth0.

So first I stumbled across not finding a GUI to delete them, a quick google revealed:

    drakconnect --delete

So I removed only the ppp0 interface.

I rebooted, still the default interface was getting selected as tun0,previously ppp0 was selected. I manually selected eth0, the graphical icon showed that connection was successful :-)

But a ping to the router resulted in an answer from the host itself.

I pinged 192.168.1.1 and got response from 192.168.1.2, indicating some network error in the ping result.

So I deleted the tun0 interface!

Then I rebooted and saw problems relating to

1)DCOP server not being started(or not being readable)

2)Configuration files kfmclientrc and kdeglobals not writable

These error screen came when I clicked the help option of the network icon(with a green tick or orange exclamation).

Please help/suggest me what next to do

    thanks,

    rohit.

  5. Hi,

    Strange... it works fine here.

Any chance that dir being on FAT or NTFS filesystem?

    And- what's the output of

yes the dir is a FAT32 filesystem.

Could it be that some linux process is watching over this directory?

Thus not allowing the rename to happen.

    thanks,

    rohit.

  6. Hi,

I am experiencing a strange behaviour.

I am unable to rename a directory to its all caps equivalent.

    Here's the output:

    [rkumar@localhost oawclassic.generatorwc.project]$ ls
    build.properties* meta-inf/ model/ oaw/ pom.xml* src/ target/ todo.txt*
    [rkumar@localhost oawclassic.generatorwc.project]$ mv meta-inf/ META-INF
mv: cannot move `meta-inf/' to `META-INF': File exists
    [rkumar@localhost oawclassic.generatorwc.project]$ ls META-INF
ls: cannot access META-INF: No such file or directory
    [rkumar@localhost oawclassic.generatorwc.project]$

Ok if this was not strange, see this:

    [rkumar@localhost oawclassic.generatorwc.project]$ rename meta-inf/ META-INF
    [rkumar@localhost oawclassic.generatorwc.project]$ ls
    build.properties* meta-inf/ model/ oaw/ pom.xml* src/ target/ todo.txt*
    [rkumar@localhost oawclassic.generatorwc.project]$

The rename seems to be successful, but still i am not able to see the all caps renamed file!

Please suggest how to achieve what i want to do!

    Thanks,

    rohit.

  7. Hi,

To find a package for your installation named 'libstdc++5' *or* one that contains libstdc++5, in a console type (you do not need to be root):

    $ rpm -q --whatprovides libstdc++5

To find what what apps require libstdc++5:

    $ rpm -q --whatrequires libstdc++5

...and you'll get a list of dependencies. There are many other possible queries, see: man rpm.

I hope I got this stuff right. If not feel free to pile on.

I did check out the --whatrequires and --whatprovides option of the rpm command, but to my dismay, no success

    [root@localhost rkumar]# rpm -q --whatprovides libstdc++5
    no package provides libstdc++5
    [root@localhost rkumar]# rpm -q --whatrequires libstdc++5
    no package requires libstdc++5
    [root@localhost rkumar]#

Also i checked out MCC for the "listdc" package, it shows libstdc++6 as the only matching result found.

I do not have the equivalent "-devel" packages installed.

    Should i install them?

    Thanks,

    rohit.

  8. Greetings there,

    I just downloaded flock.

I tried to start it and i got the following error:

    [root@localhost flock]# ./flock
./flock-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    [root@localhost flock]#

Also i checked whether i have libstdc++ or not,

    [root@localhost flock]# urpmi libstdc
    No package named libstdc
    The following packages contain libstdc:
    libstdc++-devel
    libstdc++6
    [root@localhost flock]# urpmi libstdc++6
    Package libstdc++6-4.2.2-0.RC.1mdv2008.0.i586 is already installed
    [root@localhost flock]#

Please tell me what next to do.

    Thanks,

    rohit.

  9. Hi,

Or was it compiled into the kernel and placed automatically there?

Yes, it was compiled into the kernel and placed automatically there.

I would have expected it to come under a different directory that is all. I've never used cisco_vpn, but it doesn't look normal.

It's all normal, it worked flawlessly in the mandriva 2007(free) version. :-)

    Thanks,

    rohit.

  10. Hi,

the module seems to be there:

    [root@localhost CiscoVPN]# pwd
    /lib/modules/2.6.22.9-desktop-1mdv/CiscoVPN
    [root@localhost CiscoVPN]# find /lib/ -name cisco_ipsec*
    /lib/modules/2.6.22.9-desktop-1mdv/CiscoVPN/cisco_ipsec.ko
    [root@localhost CiscoVPN]#

Also while searching over the net i came across this

I hope someone might have come across such a problem on mandriva or maybe this has already been taken care of.

I have not tried it on my system as of now.

    Thanks,

    rohit.

  11. Hi,

Mandriva uses compressed kernel modules and your error message indicates that the module was compiled but not compressed so all you have to do is find the module in the tree /lib/modules/2.6.22.9-desktop586-1mdv/kernel/... (it's my kernel tree)

    compress it with "gzip module-name.ko"

    and that's all.

    I did as you told:

    [root@localhost CiscoVPN]# pwd
    /lib/modules/2.6.22.9-desktop-1mdv/CiscoVPN
    [root@localhost CiscoVPN]# gzip cisco_ipsec.ko
    [root@localhost CiscoVPN]# ls
    cisco_ipsec.ko.gz
    [root@localhost CiscoVPN]#

    i got this:

    [root@localhost vpnclient]# /etc/init.d/vpnclient_init start
Starting /opt/cisco-vpnclient/bin/vpnclient: insmod: can't read '/lib/modules/2.6.22.9-desktop-1mdv/CiscoVPN/cisco_ipsec.ko': No such file or directory
    Failed (insmod)
    [root@localhost vpnclient]#

here are the rights of the file:

    [root@localhost CiscoVPN]# ll
    total 148
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 144567 2007-11-04 12:52 cisco_ipsec.ko.gz

then i created a .ko and .ko.gz file in the CiscoVPN dir:

    [root@localhost CiscoVPN]# ls
    cisco_ipsec.ko cisco_ipsec.ko.gz

    Then i got this:

    [root@localhost CiscoVPN]# /etc/init.d/vpnclient_init start
Starting /opt/cisco-vpnclient/bin/vpnclient: insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.22.9-desktop-1mdv/CiscoVPN/cisco_ipsec.ko': -1 Invalid module format
    Failed (insmod)
    [root@localhost CiscoVPN]#

    What next to do.

    Thanks,

    rohit.

  12. Hi,

    Edit:

Ah, I see from your link that you applied a patch that is 'include'-ing 'linux/whatever', so if you are booting to a kernel whose source is not pointed to by the symlink /usr/src/linux or the /lib/modules/whatever/linux directory, then insmod will fail. Go to a console and type

    ls -l /usr/src/linux

and if the symlink doesn't match what uname tells you, you will have to change the symlink to the right kernel and repatch your VPNclient (your patch is actually patching the client, not the kernel as far as I can tell) then recompile it.

    here's the output:

    [root@localhost /]# ls -l /usr/src/linux
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 2007-10-28 20:42 /usr/src/linux -> linux-2.6.22.9-1mdv/
    [root@localhost /]#

    [root@localhost /]# uname -a
    Linux localhost 2.6.22.9-desktop-1mdv #1 SMP Thu Sep 27 04:07:04 CEST 2007 i686 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6550 @ 2.33GHz GNU/Linux
    [root@localhost /]#

So as per your observation, these two are different.

where/how do i symlink the correct kernel?

@fdany : where do i put that file creted using gzip.

    thanks,

    rohit.

  13. Greetings there,

I am installing the Cisco VPN Client on mandriva 2008(free).

I faced problems compiling the client, then it got fixed here

Now i am facing problems starting the client.

I'm back stuck again getting the client working

    PLease help!

    thanks,

    rohit.

  14. Hi,

    My problem got resolved :D

Did a bit of google and found that there is patch that needs to be applied to the kernel 2.6.22 .

The patch is here This one is specifically for kernel 2.6.22

Now the patch has allowed the cisco client to compile ok.

    Thanks,

    rohit.

    Edit:

Find the newest and updated cisco client here

  15. Hi,

    Hi,

I have checked that path, it points correctly to /usr/src/linux which points to /usr/src/linux-* .

I think the older version of the VPN client could be the problem. I'll try this out and get back.

But it worked fine on Mandriva 2007. :-)

    Still no luck.

    IMO the problem is here:

      WARNING: Symbol version dump /usr/src/linux-2.6.22.9-1mdv/Module.symvers
is missing; modules will have no dependencies and modversions.

    or

/home/rkumar/Desktop/VPN/vpnclient/linuxcniapi.c:12:26: error: linux/config.h: No such file or directory

    any other suggestions?

    Thanks,

    rohit.

  16. Hi,

I don't understand, why kernel source used from that location? Check /usr/src/linux link to /usr/src/linux-*

And, maybe, for new kernel that ship with Mandriva 2008 your need new version of your cisco VPN client?

I have checked that path, it points correctly to /usr/src/linux which points to /usr/src/linux-* .

I think the older version of the VPN client could be the problem. I'll try this out and get back.

My kernel sources are as follows:

    [root@localhost vpnclient]# rpm -qa|grep kernel
    kernel-source-latest-2.6.22.9-1mdv2008.0
    kernel-desktop-latest-2.6.22.9-1mdv2008.0
    kernel-source-2.6.22.9-1mdv-1-1mdv2008.0
    kernel-desktop-2.6.22.9-1mdv-1-1mdv2008.0
    [root@localhost vpnclient]#

Please tell me what next to do, to compile the Cisco VPN driver.

It worked fine on 2007 earlier.

    Also i have run

    [root@localhost linux-2.6.22.9-1mdv]# make scripts/
     CHK include/linux/version.h
     CHK include/linux/utsrelease.h
     CC arch/i386/kernel/asm-offsets.s
     GEN include/asm-i386/asm-offsets.h
     CALL	scripts/checksyscalls.sh
    [root@localhost linux-2.6.22.9-1mdv]#

As suggested on a forum to make things work.. but still bad luck with me

    Please help.

    thanks,

    rohit.

  18. Greetings there,

It has been just hours since i upgraded to a newer hardware :D

    MoBo : Intel DG31PR

    Processor : Intel Core 2 DUO E6550

    RAM :2x1GB

    HDD : 250GB SATA

The mobo has lan and graphics card on board.

Please tell me which mandriva distribution to go for (64bit or not)

Also i got a CD with the mobo that has drivers for windows.

Do/whether i need to get intel drivers after installing mandriva?

    Kindly suggest,

    thanks,

    rohit.
