  1. Hello, Just installed 2006 today and it went in really smoothly. One problem I am having is that the web page scale is really small (a lot fits on a page, but you can't read it.....). I've looked through the preferences, but can't locate an option to increase the scale (aside from using View -Text Size - Increase on every page). Any suggestions or pointers would be appreciated. I did increase the general default font size, but now there are just some big words spread amongst the little words on the page - better but not quite there. Thanks -- Roger [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  2. Thanks - found volume adjustment in 'edit modem commands' of KPPP. Silence at last. Thanks again -- Roger
  3. Hi, Just installed 2006 Free, and am connecting to the web via modem using KPPP. I cannot find where to control the volume for the modem, and as a matter of fact I can't spot the modem, the printer, or any of the peripherals on the hardware manager. Must be missing something, as all of that was accessible on 10.0. I would appreciate any info as to where the periperals are accessed. I'm sure it is simple - just can't find it, and the modem signalling is really annoying. Regards -- Roger
  4. Thanks for the clarification. Sounds like a complete clean install. Thanks for the further clarification. Roger
  5. Sounds like a clean install for me. I've done a couple on prior versions with no trouble to speak of. I do have a seperate home partition - if there is any likelihood of retaining these and then the system locking up, then I would rather reload my user data on an operating system. Could retaining the home user info end up locking up the 2006 install?? Regards -- Roger
  6. Hello, Based on discussion here I am going to upgrade from 10.0 to 2006 (I am also running XP on another partition, which I hope not to touch). I have the 2006 3 CD download set and 2 CDs of all the current updates. I have a couple of questions.... Sounds like it is generally recommended to do a clean install rather than an upgrade - accurate statement?? I would like to retain my user info if possible - any tutorials on setting up the partitions to accomplish this?? I will burn a backup CD of my data just to make sure. Any other things I should be concerned about during the upgrade to 2006? Any suggestions on how to approach the 2006 updates - none, all, or some logical approach?? Thanks for any help you can provide. Probably really simple, but it is a real pain to get caught in the middle and not be able to get on line and ask how to fix it..... Roger
  7. Sounds like the FTP install is what I am looking for. Any information sources for an 'accident waiting to happen' like me on how FTP ( file transfer protocol - that's the extent of my knowledge) works, and what URL can tap into to get this done. Yep, it is frightening how little I know and am still willing to try and use Linux...... just waiting for my system to blow up!! Thanks -- Roger
  8. Apparently it is now more painful to stay on 10.0 that to upgrade. Downloading an entire new version is not feasible, so whatever I get has to be on CD or DVD. Is 2006 currently stable and is it the way to go? If so, is there an available release beyond 2006.0, the initial release version? I'm fine with poking around on the web looking for a source, unless someone has a recommended one. Thanks for your opinions in advance -- Roger
  9. Looking for DVD player software for Mandrake 10.0 official. Just looking for a reliable program to play some movies. Wife had the cronies over tonight and I settled in front of my system figuring I'ld watch a good movie and avoid all the chatter. My mistake in that I assumed that the XP DVD player offerings would actually work..... Movie stalled out almost immediately, as did my evening...... Are there reliable linux dvd players that will work on my 10.0?? Please provide info and download site. Lots of questions lately - sorry for the load. Your evening was probably better than mine...... Regards -- Roger
  10. Thanks for the URL. I'll download the rpm, make sure I have the other required sw, and see if the beauty works!! Thanks again -- Roger
  11. Hello, Interested in getting Skype or an open source equivalent on my Mandrake 10.0 official. Are any of these products 'ready for prime time'?? I am interested in just downloading a rpm and using it - not interested in (or capable of) spending hunderds of hours getting beta software to work on my system. Wife's sister just moved to Germany, and the pending phone bills motivate me to seek an alternative..... Thanks for any info or advice. Location of download (if there is any software out there that fill the bill) appreciated as well. Thanks -- Roger
  12. Just for closure, I received the 3550 and it works fine (seems a bit noisy though - maybe all burners are that way??). System booted fine and Hard Drake recognized it with no assistance. My RPM manager is on the fritz (probably a site change since I used it last), so I have not as yet uploaded MPlayer and validated drive preformance - but that's a different issue. Thanks again for the advice -- Roger
  13. Hello, The specific monitor was not listed, but the generic flat panel DID work!! Up and running - thanks so much (and not particularly painful either...................) Regards -- Roger
  14. Hello, The assessment about my monitor being bad appears to be correct. Hated it so much went down and got a Hyundai B90A LCD. Works great with Windows XP. Linux is not so good. Beautiful boot screen, looks good for a short while during early system loading, and then it stops with " video mode not supported". Put back on the old monitor and selected plug and play for monitor selection, hoping that might help, but no luck. Is there something I have to load, or some settings I need to change - or do I need a different monitor. The guy at the store assured me it would work with Windows as well as Linux, and so far he is only half right. Any help would be appreciated - I'm stuck on the old monitor until I figure it out........ and I have 30 days to return if necessary. Thanks -- Roger
  15. Well, same situation in Windows XP. Already tried the manual adjustment at the front of the monitor, and it can't compensate. I also can't find a reset button, so looks like a new monitor may be in my future........ Any recommendations for a particular brand would be appreciated. Regards -- Roger
  16. Good point - I have XP on the system and can boot into that and see what I get.....
  17. Hello, Just booted up and my screen image is only 2/3 high vertically - no change horizontally. Been running 10.0 official on this monitor (viewsonic e771) for over a year with no problems. Reboot yielded same problem, and resetting the hardware via harddrake was no improvement (after reboot). Any suggestions would be appreciated (not much fun to look at). Tried the screen scaling on the monitor itself - no help. No software changes as far as I know......... Regards -- Roger
  18. Thanks for the replys. Looks like I will give the NEC a try. Looked at both the NEC and LG at Newegg - seems like they are selling vastly more of the NEC to a satisfied customer group. Hopefully it will be plug and play........ Regards -- Roger
  19. Hello, Looking to add a dvd burner to my 10.0 download system (ibm compatible), and it seems many have good things to say about the NEC 3550A (including good linux compatibility). Is anyone actually using the 3550a on 10.0?? Didn't see it listed on the 10.0 hardware compatibility listing database, so thought a bit of confirmation would be usefuly prior to purchase. Thanks -- Roger
  20. I encountered a similar problem after an online update of xfree (supposed to fix some screen artifacts). Reinstalled 2006 free from disk, graphical interface back, and I am waiting a bit to upload the xfree update again. I will be interested to hear your resolution as it may resolve my problem as well. Regards -- Roger
  21. Thanks, installed and running!!! Appreciate the help
  22. Hello and thanks for the lead. I do have all the dources configured into my installer. I tried iirc, realplayer, flashplayer (even caps, for possible case sensitivity). I get search results from all categories - plf free, plf nonfree, contrib - but nothing to do with flashplayer or realplayer...... Too soon after 2006 release to see these available?? I would prefer to use the installer. Any suggestions on how to proceed?? Thanks -- Roger so simple, yet
  23. Hi , Thanks for the tip - looked on the repositories, but with no luck. Did find an rpm on the FlashPlayer site (buried) but it was downlevel and my installer wasn't interested. Just one question before I install via the Macromedia installer - is there an issue with this not being tracked via the installer (future install conflicts)?? Thanks -- Roger
  24. Thanks, sounds like I'll just download and use their installer!! Regards -- Roger
  25. Hello, Thanks for the reply and info. Nothing wrong with the Macromedia installer that I know about. I was wondering if realplayer was supersceeded by an alternate program or if there was a bug or other problem that caused it not to be included . I have also managed to break my system on several occasions ( a 'learning experience'), and found that if I can leverage the system installer my odds of success are greater. I am just a newbie that aspires to be a user rather than a sysprog.......hopefully that is not too un-Linuxlike :o Regards -- Roger
