  1. Well, I may have missed my window of opportunity to see if the red icon stays on What happened was the system would sort of stall out while update information was being fetched, and then there would be a pop-up window on the bottom right of the screen telling me there were updates available (I think it is all part of the information window, like for download and other process info). The window is grey, and not red. That window would drop pretty rapidly, and I don't remember if there was a red icon remaining at the bottom after I was informed of update availability.

  2. Hello,

Is there a way to set the system to not check automatically for updates?? I went to the control panel and set it for every 24 hours, but it still trots off about every 20 minutes or so. The whole system basically grinds to a halt during this process, and it is a real pain. I imagine it is really simple. I was thinking of disabling the update sources, but not sure if that is the best approach....

    Thanks -- Roger

  3. Thanks, but I don't know what a Bios upgrade would consist of?? I just uploaded 2010.2 a couple of days ago, and just completed a second full 'upgrade' from the mirror site. Not sure if there is much more to upgrade. I have not rebooted the system yet to see if there was a fix included in the latest batch - got my fingers crossed....

    Thanks -- Roger

  4. Thanks for the reply. How does one submit the bug, since this problem is consistent?? No typing capability after boot. Then I unplug and replug, and typing capability returns after a few seconds. Hopefully no damage to the system as yet. How long would something like this normally take to get resolved?? I reckon I am doing the mechanical connectors no favors, since I boot up the computer several times a day (turn it off when un-used for couple of hours). The wife does not like poking around in the back of the computer, and having her poke around back there is probably more dangerous than the PS2 hot-plugging anyways....

I've been thinking of just breaking down and getting a new usb keyboard, although I would prefer to avoid the expense and I really like my current keyboard (not mushy like the new ones.....). I would guess that not many are using the PS2 connected devices, and testing for their functionality is a secondary concern.

Suggestions on how to proceed would be appreciated.

    Regards -- Roger

  5. Hello,

How can I constrain Mandriva to scan the PS2 port on my computer on boot? My keyboard is on a PS2 connector, and only works now when I boot, then unplug, then replug it in. I assume that the port is not scanned until it detects a 'new' device, and then activates the keyboard.

Hopefully this is super simple - help greatly appreciated.

    Regards -- Roger

PS - it is a really nice old mechanical keyboard, which is why I would like to keep it.....

I initally posted this in the hardware section, but thought this might be a more appropriate forum - can't see how to delete my hardware post??

  6. Hello,

It was not set at standard, but is now. Still have the same problem, though. I actually found a post from several years ago about having to change the max system MTU from 1500 to 1492 in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 to make my modem work. Forgot how to file edit and use kdesu, so some homework will be necessary......

  7. Hello,

Just loaded 2010.2, and am having problems with accessing web pages. I have the firewall off, and seem to have no problems with pages that are not secure. Secure log-in pages, such as for eBay, won't load. I can get some of them finally with Chromium (in an unformatted state), but none at all with Firefox. Not sure if it is a security set-up issue, or if there are some plug-ins that are required. Do I need to add user permissions, or alter the setup in some way? I was running 2008 previously, and did not have this problem.

Suggestions appreciated. I think I am most of the way there on this install, but have a few bumps to get over to get the system really usable.

    Thanks -- Roger

  8. I did not retain my home directory. Where would I get an alternate copy of firefox that would load over my existing one?? It does seem that the firefox is missing some plug-ins and page displays are not complete. I guess I have more work to do - thought the current level would be a bit more unified (but maybe the required plug-ins are not officially open source....)

    Thanks -- Roger

  9. Sorry for all of the updates.... I did manage to get through to the eBay login via Chromium. It took a good, long wait, and none of the graphics came up. Once into eBay, everything seemed to be fine. Tried again to get into eBay login, thinking that maybe a lack of cached pages was the problem, but still a long wait for an incomplete page. It seems to barely be able to get there. Still no joy with Firefox.

Suggestions appreciated, as I have run out of things to try....

  10. Hello,

Are there any specific user permissions that need to be set to enable broader internet usage? Do I need to enable / do something with the VPN (not enabled as yet)?? There seems to be some security / authentication issue that is locking up the connection once it reaches a certain point.

    Thanks

  11. Yes, as it turns out I did get the Chromium browser. Tried that and I run into exactly the same problem. Can't even load Yahoo, or get into secured sites requiring login (yahoo mail works ok - I can log into that). Guess it is something in my security settings? I never got the "this site does not supply ownership information" before, even though they are sites that I commonly use. That was with 2008.1 free using the FireFox browser.

    Thanks -- Roger

  12. Hello,

I just installed 2010.2 and are working through some issues. Any web pages associated with a secure site only partially load. I disabled the firewall, and it got a bit further along, but still won't load. I looked all through the Firefox menu items (particularly in preferences) for the cookie setting, but can not locate it. Could be that the browser is not accepting cookies, but I can't tell.

The little red danger icon in the lower right of the screen, when activated, says "this site does not supply ownership information" The site was yahoo on a redirect from yahoo mail......

    Any help would be appreciated.....

    Regards -- Roger
