  1. Hi,

I run 2008 since a while now and I have a wonderful time, all works so much better than any of my previous mandriva distros and that direct out of the box. Compiz fusion with all options on is a beauty and makes my daily jobs very fun AND more efficient!

But! I have that nagging but which makes me lose my window frames each time I work on an open-office file. Not a major problem, I carry on the work and restart the DM but it would be better without theis problem.

I couldn t find it in the bug list so I show it here to know if :

1- Is it a known problem

    2- Any remedy?

    I have a crash

  2. Hi,

I couldn t see much on our forum about the screenlets which come with the latest Compiz-Fusion. I know some people are about irritated about 3d desktops but hey, there is room for everybody! It seems that there are now three main casts of Linux users :

-1 The "I only use command line cause it's faster, efficient, never crashes...." and looks clever!

-2 The "I use 2D desktop 'cause it's faster, I don t need the toys and widgets to invade my screen"

-3 The "Waow looks it's cool it turns wobbles flashes goe up and down and OOOPS, it crashes!!"

Ah AH , only joking, anyway here is my desktop at the moment, Orion as a wall paper, a couple of screenlets (urpmq -f screenlet for the name of the pachage), my new KDE launch button (Tux/Tintin...).

    I posted it on :

  3. Looks like the Kickoff menu takes the kmenu button image from a different place. You only have to find that place and change the image there. Anyway I use the KDE menu style and I managed to change the kmenu button like this.

    Hi,

In kickoff configuration, one needs a file named named kmenu_basic.mng and place as described underneath in order to change the kmenu icon.

So all you need is an Icon of your choice (usually .png) rename it kmenu_basic.mng (Gimp) and then do :

    cd /var/lib/mandriva/kde-profiles/powerpack/share/apps/kicker/pics/

    mv /home/YOURHOME/Pictures/Tux/kmenu_basic.mng kmenu_basic.mng

then the usual dcop kicker kicker restart and you're done!

  4. True, but the Alt-F2 thing remembers what you've run before, so next time you go in, the already-run programs will be highlighted too.

Doesn't help much for the first time in of course, I agree.

Indeed, sorry to insist, but with Katapult you can also

-acces any of your web favourites in the same quick "intelligent" way

    - you can do calculations (without opening kalculator) apparently even scientific ones

-finally you can open a song by its title if it's in your amarok playlist.

I think that's useful for people like me who are not used to laptop's integrated mouse pad, otherwise for desktop use, I m not sure...

  5. Hi,

For those who prefer a quick keyboard shortcut to grabbing the mouse, I now use katapult, a nice little tool who sits gently in the system tray and which can call any program you like just by typing alt+space, I find it very useful.

    http://katapult.kde.org/

and to get the rpm go to :

http://www.mandrivauser.de/smarturpmi/ and add the mud-free rpms to your system,

  6. Here's my new (and shiny) Mandriva 2008. This time I thought I'd give Gnome a go.

    post-13785-1192474522_thumb.png

Very nice, I ll have to try to do something similar with the "branches" leading to folders and IP on the intra-net, excellent.

As previously mine is a shot of my Mandriva 2008 (recently installed from one so not much of a looker yet!), notice as well the link via VNC to my zaurus C-860!

  7. Hi Sorry I was abroad on Hols...

    http://forum.qnap.com/phpbb2/index.php

This forum should answer your questions,

I did a lot of searching on the reviews before i chose the QNAP, from the top of my head, the speed of the CPU and RAM are far better than the others, it runs on very little power, totally silent,

http://www.bjorn3d.com/read.php?cID=1137 was the review I looked at I think.

You can Hack it, look at the forum some people have changed the Bittorrent client, also it is pretty new so give a bit of time and some hackers will break it!

I remember hesitating with the Synology but was a bit more money and the DS107 has a fan which I hate...

    PS a link there too : http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/Open_Turbostation

  8. Hi There,

Nothing very exciting, just the web access to my QNAP-ts109 that I strongly advise. On the snapshot is the download station which works with firefox and allows the users to download some stuff while the pc is off (here it was on for obvious reasons...).

The bottom right is an ssh shell from the linux box into the QNAP which shows the linux command line (2.6.12.6-arm1 and busybox). The hardware is fast (500 MHz CPU and DDRII ram).

I really like it so I ll go back to it now...

    Stef

    :D

  9. WuahahahahAHAHAHahahAHAH,

This is me since I received my QNAP-109 turbostation, marvel of Linux device. 80% Linux compatible I would say, some of the java apps for the download station don t quite work but hey, I ll hack it and they will.

I access it via www or ssh via my linux box or my zaurus and launch downloads which run overnight. The appliance takes less power than a power saving bulb. Totally noiseless.

    Very good!

    :lol2:

  10. Hi,

A petition is on the website of number 10, you can sign it if you are a uk resident. It is about the fact that the BBC is trialling tv on demand with a windows only (vista only as well I think) software.

Please sign if you agree it should be open. Personally I pay my taxes and I feel I should have access to this public money funded channel with the means of my choice.

  11. Well more to the point, nice looking cube there - a bit too green for my taste, but 3D (which I currently cannot run for some reason).

    Hi there!

Sorry about the green, I thought it was trendy...

    http://www.howtoforge.com/3d_desktop_on_mandriva_2007_spring

That is a good link to possibly repair your 3d desktop, although a lot of people find it a bit useless (just an "eye candy") I find it useful to switch (in style) between applications. It also is a good advertising tool when trying to persuade my friends to give the old penguin a try!

  12. Hi,

I though we might as well videos of our desktops (3d) so here is mine, rename the file as a .avi and visualise at low size (half or quarter size of screen)

    Stef

    Hi,

Is this download working or not? MUB would not let me upload the .avi so I changed it to .txt. To play I think one just needs to remove the .txt extension and then put the avi back. Then Playing it with kaffeine should be ok.

Tell me if it does not work please!

    Stef

  13. Hi,

In order to improve a bit my network, I d like a piece of hardware able to host an ftp server and carry on downloads or uploads while my station is off. My goal would be only the router on and the piece of hardware.

I had a look and the two which seem to be in my price range are : QNAP TS-101 and the Synology Disk Station DS-101j. There seem to be some compatibility issues with Linux, mainly for the "download replicator" program which helps one to organise the downloads whilst the pc is off.

If anyone has one of these two, please let me know the pros and cons, otherwise any advice on other solutions are welcome. Budget is max £ 150 ($ 306, € 222).

    Thanks a bunch!

    Stef

  14. FBReader supports chm format. You can find an ipk for your Z in the downloads section of fbreader.org.

You will also need the expat ipk, libenca ipk, and the libbz2 ipk, all of which are in the fbreader.org downloads section.

GGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRR I forgot my z at work! What a pain , I ll try that tomorrow, don t fancy going back to the office today!
