  1. aioshin, I checked the box, to start cups when it boots up, is that what you mean? What about the cups-lpd thing? I don't have that checked? Should it be starting up at boot up? Thanks. Shane
  2. Solarian, I checked and yup, it's installed. It has these dependencies too. Because of their dependencies, the following package(s) also need to be removed: drakconf-10.2-5mdk, drakfirsttime-1.2-0.1mdk, drakoo-0.6-1mdk, drakxtools-10.2-24.2.102mdk, font-tools-0.1-11mdk, freetype-tools-1.3.1-23mdk, harddrake-10.2-24.2.102mdk, harddrake-ui-10.2-24.2.102mdk, hwdb-clients-0.16.1-1mdk, mdkonline-1.2-1.1.102mdk, OpenOffice.org-1.1.4-7.1.102mdk, OpenOffice.org-help-en-1.1.4-7.1.102mdk, OpenOffice.org-l10n-en-1.1.4-7.1.102mdk, rpmdrake-2.10-4.2.102mdk, userdrake-1.2.1-2mdk Didn't dare uninstall all my updates, they seem important. Shane
  3. I don't know what a RHEL doc is or a vi. Windows has made me a GUI dependant kind of guy. I know a little about using the command line but not much. shane
  4. Hey Everyone, I have read some of the other posts, but it seems that the MCC has really changed from 10.1 to LE2005. My fonts look bad in my web browsers (Mozilla, FireFox, and Konquerer) as well as in my Thunderbird. This is where all my reading takes place, and it is really annoying. There must be some way to clean this up. Any ideas? Thanks, Shane
  5. polemicz, Ok, I tried the localhost:901 and it said it wasn't allowed. I looked for swat in the MCC - System - Services and there isn't a swat option. Also in the MCC I didn't see a sharing option. I'm using LE2005. What nexted? Thanks for your help! Shane
  6. Ok, I can print fine with the Linux. And when the printer is connected to XP it prints fine. I'm dual booting this machine, so, it in the XP network it works fine. However when I get to Linux with windows network, well no go. Can you explain your statement above? what is localhost:901? and how do you set that up? I edited the smb.conf file and then found someone elses post to copy and try and add printers, but failed. I'm pretty new to this. Thanks! Shane
  7. Hey, I'm having the same problem. My fonts look terrible. The menu fonts look fine, it is the web, anything on my browser looks fuzzy. Also in my email. Basicly everything looks bad exepct the menu and KDE tool bars and so forth. Any ideas? How do you run gnome-font-properties?? Thanks. Shane
  8. Hey, I'm having the same question. I copied the samba.conf, but I have a different printer, and don't know what I should put down for my printer. I'm refering to the [psc-1210] part. I don't have that type of printer. I have a Canon i560 on my Linux and would like to be able to print from XP to the network printer. How do I do that final configurations, or where do I find that info? Thanks. Shane
  9. Never mind, I got it. I checked the hotplug box for start up and it fixed the problem. Shane
  10. Ok, in solving problem A, I have created problem B. When I plugged my mouse into the port to test my theory I was right. Now, I plugged my mouse back into the original port, and nothing. I re-booted, and nothing. It still doesn't work. Now what do I do? I went to the MCC and looked at the hardware, and the mouse, and the usb ports, but I really don't know what to do to get it to work right now. Any ideas? Is there a restore thing, or turn the clock back some? Shane I was going to make this a new thread, but I would have to cover a lot of ground that has already been covered here. My touch pad works, but I like the mouse better. They both worked before hand I haven't changed anything, just unplugged it, and plugged it into the "bad/unrecognized" port.
  11. MrMadd, This is really crazy. I got a thinking that if you didn't see it in the things I had posted and it was plugged in, that it must not recognize that USB port. Because you said it wasn't plugged in. I plugged it into another port on the 4 port hub that I have, and worked great!! For some reason Linux doesn't recognize my port on the side of my laptop. That is really unlogical because it should be just hardwired as any other USB port, none the less it is working now! Go Figure??? I really appreciate your help. To further prove my point, I plugged my mouse into the side port, and it doesn't work either. I just don't get it. Oh well. Shane
  12. It was plugged in for that amount of time, becuase it took me that long to get the command line open and running, and get all the commands correctly typed in. Especially after I played around with the tail -f command a few minutes trying to get it right. When I plug it in the little light goes on for a minute and then shuts off on the drive. When it is plugged into XP, the little light stays on all the time, meaning it is running. When I save something to it, it blinks meaning it is writing. For some reason it is shutting off in Linux, meaning it is not even active or recognized, or something. No inconvenience on my part, I appreciate the help. Probably more inconvenience on your part for working with such a novice. :D Shane
  13. MrMad, Ok this is really crazy. In windows I reformated the drive to eliminate any errors there. I unplugged everything from the USB to eliminate problems there. In the command line I tried the tail -f/var/log/messages line again, and it didn't work!!! I wanted to see if that eliminated some of the errors. 14. VeeDubb, I use it with Windows all the time, so I know the drive is good. I also know the USB port is good because I'm dual booting, and don't have a problem with that port. I use the Flash Drive with XP in that same port, which eliminates all hardware, it is a setup problem. Thanks for the thought though! I guess if I had mentioned some of that earlier, it may have made it easier on everyone. Sorry. I messed up with my partitioning, and now want to transfer files via my USB drive. I work on about 3 different computers in different locations, so my USB is like my briefcase. Shane Also I have a 4 port USB hub. It is generic and gives me 4 other USB ports since I only have 3 on my laptop. That is the excessive amount of USB's you see. My printer, Palm (when not running doesn't effect nothing) are plugged into the hub, my mouse is direct to the USB on the computer and the Flash Drive is plugged directly to the computer's USB port.
  15. Thanks MrMad, Ok, it worked this time. I don't know if I was logged in as root last time, or typed wrong. 16. Ok, here is the deal, I re-installed and CD 2 worked this time!!! so I plugged it in, and presto..... nothing. I know one of these post will be presto ..... IT WORKED. but we aren't there yet. Now I'm at a loss. I'm urpmi-ing, but don't really see how this will solve my problem. I tried the trail -f/var/log/messages but it just said to try trail --help, and that gave me a bunch of help info, but not system info. I'm at a loss. Any ideas??? Thanks in advance. Shane Ok, didn't work now I really need help. I plug it in and nothing happens. I don't have any sda devices. I don't have any in my fstab either. I don't know what to put there.
  17. VeeDubb, I can re-burn that CD tonight when I go back to the office, and then run through the install process again, can't hurt anything. Wouldn't I be able to get anything missing on CD2 through the updates? I'm updating now, I have DSL, but wouldn't call it fast. Thanks. Shane
  18. Ok, updated and went very smoothly. Wow that was really nice. Now I'm running 2005. So I plugged it in, and presto....... nothing. Didn't work. Probably if I had done a new install it would have worked, but nothing. Ok, one detail, My Cd2 was bad and so I didn't get anything from CD2 installed. 3 was fine. I'm going to run the update and then retry and then if not, I will post again. Thanks for the help. Shane
  19. Thanks VeeDubb, and MrMad, I was thinking of upgrading, anyway, but didn't see the point in it. If USB works that much better I may give that a whirl maybe tonight. If not, I will be back posting here to get this thing straightened out. Thanks again for your help. Shane
  20. I installed 10.1 Community a few weeks ago. I used the partition tool on the install, everything went very smoothly. It booted right up, no problem, and XP booted fine too. I have a laptop with a 40 GB hd, it had one partition NTFS. Mandrake handled it well. I did the defrag, disk clean up and backed up all important data. Mandrake for the clean install and partition tool. Shane
  21. Hey everyone, I have searched the forum, read the usb fixes, and come up empty handed. Sorry if I missed something. I have a no name usb flash drive, says "Geek Squad" on it from Best Buy, but no manufacturer name. When I plug it in, it doesn't work. I have tried several fixes from other posts, but don't really know what I am doing. How can I get this to work? I'm using KDE. I'm used to plug it in and it works kind of stuff. It's a XP thing. Thanks. Shane Sorry forgot to add I'm using 10.1 Community
  22. Ok, I checked the iso's and all is good. Burned the CD's and tried the install, and it hung up. It hung up on some memory thing. I think loading into memory?, I'm not sure, guess that is a big red sign saying BEWARE this will mess up your system. I'm going to stick with 10.1 for a while longer. Thanks for the input! Shane Sorry I misplaced this topic.
  23. I like shinier and newer, but is it better? Some old things are better than the new. I understand it is a relative question, but wanted some ideas as to what is in the new. Does it run smoother? I haven't been using the 10.1 long, so it would be easy to upgrade. Shane
  24. I'm new to Linux and have been using 10.1 Community for a month. I found Mandriva LE2005, downloaded, checked the iso's, and burned them to CD. Now, is it better than 10.1? Is there an advantage to updating? I don't know anything about 2005, I don't know much about 10.1, are they similar? Shane [moved from Software by spinynorman - welcome aboard :)]
