  1. Great! Thanks! I finally got the contacts to export to a known format. However, it only imports one at a time???:wall: Ok, I'm looking for answers to question 2. What other M$ Outook look-a-likes are there? I appreciate the help, devries, but Evolution should allow basic importing of csv, or even txt. That is sad that it cannot even import those two options.

  2. I have been working on migrating to Mandriva LE2005. I use Act! 6.0 in Windows which is similar to M$ Outlook. I have both. I have more than 1000 contacts in my database, and don't care to type them all into a new Linux database. I have used Kontact (ugly) and not good for a migration after using Act, or Outlook. I have recently tried Evolution and found it to be a much nicer looking program, and seems more usable, however - no import feature. It import four types of database, none of which M$ Outlook, or Act export to.

    1. Does anyone have another suggestion for a program replacement?

(Email client, Contact manager, Calendar management, To Do list - & Palm sync-ability - it appears that Evolution does all this, and looks nice.)

    2. Does anyone know how to get my contacts into Evolution? (I can export to csv, txt, and so forth).

    Thanks!

  3. Ok, here is the fstab:

    # This file is edited by fstab-sync - see 'man fstab-sync' for details

I added the last line. I know that I seen it somewhere. Now it doesn't even see my pen drive.

and here is the fdisk -l

I don't think the pen drive partitioning is bad as I use it with windows as well. Thanks for the help.

  4. Hey Everyone,

I'm running LE2005 on a Laptop. I have a "GeekSquad" 256 usb flash drive from Best Buy. I use this to transfer files between comptuers and OS. It works fine in Windows, and has worked great in Mandriva till now.

Lately when I plug it in, it seems to recognize it fine. I can read from it fine. When I try to write to it it goes buggy. It seems to lock up on me, and become unaccessable. There are no error messages, other than the drive is not accessable. When I edit my /ect/fstab it always puts a lot of spaces in there between /dev/sda/ /GEEKSQUAD ....... (I'm not in linux, and don't remember the actual wording, but is similar to this) If I edit it and take out all the spaces, it seems to work fine, until I try to write to it. I have written to it before and it has worked well in the past. Question 1 What is the proper fstab line that I should have? Question 2 How can I make what I put in there stay and not change? Thanks!

  5. Ok, I got it. Somehow whatever I was editing was not the real smb.conf file. I don't understand what I did, but somehow I was editing some bogus smb.conf file. I found the real one, /etc/samba/smb.conf and deleted everything in it. Deleted swat that had completely overwritten everything, and really confused me. I re-ran the sharing thing in the MCC and now it works. I installed the printer on the XP box, and everything is great!

A BIG THANKS TO: Polemicz :tm: for hanging in there with me, and being patience with us newbies! Thanks all that helped!

    :thanks:

Ok, here is my smb.conf file. Maybe someone can see the problem here. I installed the swat thing, and tried it out, but I didn't see anywhere to configure anything. Maybe a couple of pointers there? I did manage to get logged on, and it was a bunch of documentation, but no where to configure things.

  7. Ok, I got it, I downloaded every lib.png that I could get my hands on. After about 5 downloads, I went back and tried to re-install the pixus thing, it works great! The little green light even quits blinking, and the print comes out much clearer. Thanks for the input!

    Shane

  8. That is the problem, when I try to specify the printer, there isn't one! That is what I don't understand. I ran through the setup and made sure that it is setup, made sure that the workgroup name is right, it is not showing up when I try and add a printer. I do the browse for the network printer, get onto the Mandrake computer, and click there isn't one there!

My other post on the printer, is because I'm thinking that because this printer is not really setup right on Linux even though it works, that this is my problem. I really don't know, and am just trying things now. I haven't had a lot of time in Linux lately anyway.

Samba seems to be working fine because I can see everything that I need to, however maybe a line is not right in the share thing. I'm going to search for swat and install it, so I can try the local:901 thing. Thanks for your help. I will just keep twiddling with things until something either clicks, or I really screw something up.

  9. I'm dual booting and new to linux, so I will keep my $30. I don't know how to soft link anything. What does that mean? and how do I do it? I will need simple step by step instructions. Is there already a petition for canon that I can sign, or does it need started?

    Thanks.

    Shane

  10. Ok, I have a Canon i560 printer. I'm using LE2005. I have cups configured to the BJ7000 which seems to work with some problems. It always leaves the little green light blinking after I print until it is shut off and re-started. I did some searching and came up with that I needed to install these two things:

    bjfilterpixus560i-2.4-0.i386.rpm

    bjfiltercups-2.4-0.i386.rpm

So I downloaded them from here:

    ftp://download.canon.jp/pub/driver/bj/linux/

I tried to install them, however the pixus one needs: libpng.so.2 I did some searching for this and couldn't find it. I installed libpng3-1.2.8-1mdk but that didn't seem to meet the need. I don' t know what else to do. When I print on the printer it always comes out lighter than when I print with windows on the same printer. Any ideas? Thanks

  11. I can print from Linux on this printer. However I'm not happy with the settings. When printing from XP the doc's look much better. It is a canon i560. I have done some searching and found that this seems to be a problematic printer for Linux. I set it to the BJ7000 and it does print, and gets every right, just the printing comes out a little light. Everytime I print though it leaves the little green light blinking on top. I'm going to try and install the bjfilterpixus560i-x.x-x.i386.rpm bjfiltercups-x.x-x.i386.rpm, but I'm not sure what ones to install. You have to know what kernel, and I don't know what kernel I have. I don't know how to check either.

Thanks Polemicz - Hopefully by Monday this will be fixed.

  12. Ok here is the setup. I have two laptops networked with a router. Laptop A is only booting XP. Laptop B is dual booting XP/MDK and has the printer. In XP the network works fine, we can print across network without a problem. When B is in Linux, I can share files without a problem. A can see B, and B can see A and share files. A cannot see the printer, or print with it.

When I try the smbclient -L Rices - it says connection failed. When I use the smb4k I can connect to laptop A without a problem. On Laptop A I can connect to laptop B and see files, however no Printer, just a pdf-gen thing that doesn't do anything when printed to. The Printer has been installed on Laptop A before and printed directly to the printer, which should eliminate any driver issues.

In cups I had to set the printer up as a BJ20000 or something because it didn't have my Canon i560, could that cause laptop A to not see it because it is looking for a i560, or wouldn't that matter. I read that Laptop A would need to use it's own drivers, eliminating my cups setup here. (I would think.) I think I covered all you wanted to know, and ran through all necessary steps. I really appreciate your help.

  13. If you only have the upgrade CD, I'm about 85% sure that you won't be able to do the install. If you could Microsoft would be losing $, and they are not about to let that happen. My Dad had a 98SE upgrade disk, and could install from it. It is only to upgrade the OS that you have.

    2. If it does install, Windows should recognize partitions that you have, pick the one that is not home. You will probably have to know by their sizes - I'm assuming, I haven't done this. But my windows doesn't even recognize my partitions, it sees them, but can't define them or access them.

    3. I'm dual booting XP and LE2005 works nice, but my XP was already there, then I installed LE2005. I didn't have an existing Home Dir. I reccommend back up everything, install win2k if it will let you and then use the nice LE2005 partitioning tool to partition your hd. Worked great for me. :D

  14. Maybe we should define MCC. I'm using the MandrakeLinux Control Center 10.2 (Limited Edition 2005) That is what the window says at the top. On the left here are my options from top to bottom:

    Software Management

    Hardware

    Network & Internet

    System

    Mount Points

    Security

    Boot

That is all I have. I really don't think we are talking about the same thing here because "sharing' is not here. I click on the little computer with a red circle on it. It is beside the Computer that opens a command line if I click on that, that is by a Ram head, that I don't know what is and that is by a desktop clearing button, that is beside the Star that says Menu on my tool bar at the bottom. What is your MCC? Because I either we are talking about two different MCC's or mine is really, lacking in features. Help! I really do appreciate the help, just continue being patient with me.

  15. :thanks: Polemicz,

Well that was super easy, I'm back in KDE and looks great after using the gnome-fonts-properties That was a quick, and very easy fix for the problem. Thanks a bunch! I will play around with both desktops since I'm not partitial to one of them yet. I liked Gnome better just because I could actually read what I was supposed be be reading! Thanks a Bunch! I'm happily back in buisness on KDE. :jump:

  16. Polemicz,

I guess I missed that post somehow. Thanks for pointing that out. I'm trying out Gnome Desktop now and it looks really good here. Do I just type "Run gnome-font-properties" in a command line? My basic problem is that I need simple steps for these wonderful suggestions that everyone is giving. I appreciate the help, but I have tried a few of them, and find that I really don't understand how to do what has been suggested. I'm relatively new to Linux, but I'm not new to computers (although I'm not a programmer either). How can I try this gnome-font-properties, because it is definitely a problem in KDE, and not with Linux. Gnome looks really good, I may just start using it instead, but that really doesn't solve the problem.

  17. After unrecoverably crashing XP once I decided the same thing even for Windows.

I thought the swap partition was for my documents when I originally set up. I have since learned better.

Ok, Looks like another install is in order. Bye, bye docs and settings!

Making another partition should allow both windows and Linux to access it right?

    Shane

  18. I must have been ripped off then because I don't have the LookNFeel option in my KDE 3.3 Control Center. I have looked under system, Fonts, Boot options, hardware, software and so forth, I just don't see it. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place, I can't find any anti-aliasing options. Font's just lets me install more fonts, which doesn't help much I have installed every type of font I can get my hands on. I'm considering just a new re-install and fix my partitions too. Which seems crazy just to fix my fonts. I would have to re-install firefox, and thunderbird, and loose my settings for them.

    Thanks.

    Shane

  19. No, I have three partitions. 1 - Windows 2 - Swap 3 - Linux I wanted to fix that too, but well, haven't done that yet either. I guess I could do all that and fix my partitions as well. I would prefer fix the fonts and be not worry about the rest.

    Shane

  20. I don't know what xorg display driver I'm using. I haven't touched it. I don't even know how to change it. Hopefully that helps. Where can I find what I'm using?

As for a fresh install, would that be to wipe everything and start new??? That's an option, but not the best so far. I will try other things first. That would be a last resort measure.

    Thanks.

    Shane

  21. No, I haven't tried re-installing Xorg. I will give that a try. I really don't remember how the fonts got to be so messed up. I upgraded from 10.1 to LE2005, and I think that was the problem. I don't remember this problem before the update.
