  1. for nvidia and ati-drivers, please don't blame mandriva, blame ati and nvidia for the somewhat difficult install and the closed-source nature of their drivers

I think you have kinda missed the point on that one. The open-source and ati drivers worked before, the issue was that Mandriva uses a development version of Xorg which they pulled from the CVS. If the used a stable version of Xorg, it is sensible to suggest that the nvidia and ati drivers would not be an issue. Ergo, blame Mandriva, they packaged a development xorg to keep intel happy (i'm sure there is a business arrangement between the two.....)

And to be quite frank, installing ati and nvidia's closed source drivers is a doddle, just takes a little patience and about 5 mins of your time............

    B)

  2. Me, at 24, well technically, I have only been using it for 6 months. It was just out of interest really, but then again look at what curiosity did to the cat.......

Started off with Mandriva, still use it as my main distro while I get to grips with gentoo, well when I say get to grips, I kinda won half the battle, the ultimate goal is to know enough about what I am doing with it to be confident using it 24/7!

  3. Intel graphics have no closed source drivers, the open source ones are fully functional under Linux.

People tend to forget this, but Intel actually offers the fastest open source 3d graphics at the moment.... Thanks Intel! (BTW it was likely also Intel that made Mdv include xorg cvs.... 2 sides of the medaillion I guess..)

The reason behind the developmentl Xorg was to support the new intel graphics chips that are creeping into new laptops.

  4. This is not flame bait, but a striped down install of KDE has a much closer look and feel to Windows, which would help to accurately compare the Open source implementation to the windows implementation.

I don't have anything against Gnome, because I originally learned to use Linux using it and I know the users said they prefered gnome, but a scaled down version of KDE, with Lotus notes, firefox (opera is my real preferense, but I'll stick to the overly hype firefox) and a music player could win more converts in my opinion.

That is your opinion, about a choice that is right for you, however as the following states, that a group of 300 people indicated an overall preference for gnome, the majority of which probably never heard of linux up until now. But at the end of the day, it's not about what DE is better for converting people, or accommodating noobs, its really about giving the users a set of tools to get the job done. Like I say there's nothing wrong with KDE, yes its just as good, it just came down to preference.

The IT department chose Linux using the Gnome presentation layer after inviting both library staff and members of the public to try desktops using different operating systems and presentation layers.

Timms said, "We had Mac, Microsoft Windows and best-of-breed open source configurations, including KDE and Gnome. We had 300 people using the PCs. The one they preferred was Gnome."

  5. I could get used to Gnome, but I don't like Nautilus as the file manager, as it opens all the directories in separate windows.  I preferred konqueror, as it opened them in the same window.  This was why I'd always used KDE until now, because I can suffer Nautilus if the apps actually load first time.

Nautilus is easly tweaked (not sure why this isn'nt set as a default though).

run gconf-editor, then I think its in apps>nautilus, and tick the browser option. it will then behave just like konqueror did. ;)

  6. Gnome?!?

    :jester:

Well, at least it's linux!

It is what the people preffered, each to their own!

Timms said, "We had Mac, Microsoft Windows and best-of-breed open source configurations, including KDE and Gnome. We had 300 people using the PCs. The one they preferred was Gnome."

It's good to see this happening. There was some coverage over the office of Deputy PM regards to investing research into open source a while back. Good to see that this is something they are serious about, and I do hope it goes well. The less the UK government is dependent on Microsoft, the more likely it will introduce measures to loosen Microsofts grip on the software market.

  7. Hi

i just looked for the file in konq and it is there with the module section and everything, but if i try to edit it through a console, vi /etc/x11/xorg.conf its blank and it says new file!

    i don't quite understand.

This might seem silly but, have you tried /etc/X11/xorg.conf? As the X11 folder is named X11 and not x11, which may explain why you are getting the new file?

  8. Nothing wrong with the idea of club membership as being a donation if that's the way it's advertised.  But it's not.

Mandriva sell a product and services and that's what you're being asked to pay for.  If you don't recieve them then you shouldn't pay for them.

By all means donate money to Mandriva to thank them for all their hard work for the open source community, but that's not what club membership is supposed to be...

Good to see another person agree's with me, I was beginning to feel lonely on this one!

I'm getting a feeling of deja vu :P

    Me three!

  9. Humm, but how about the Free isos that are out now?

Why didn't they wait until the issue has been fixed? Or has it?

Releasing a distro for the general public knowing such errors in code is unresponsible at the least.

If MS did such a thing I think most of the internet would be up in arms crying foul.

Who knows, some of the club is up in arms about the whole thing, its not good PR, and its not good for GNU linix and general (as far as I can see, most noobs are drawn to Mandriva as their first distro, I know I was). Although it does give an additional motive for people to join the club, maybe that's what they want to trap them into the 12 month contract after you have parted with your money, only to find out that the club membership really ain't worth all that money!!! I have even seen Adam Williamson (the club forum administrator) remark that if the choice was his, certain items would not have appeared in that release!

  10. Hi, can anyone say what's wrong with the experimental Xorg the new Mandriva uses apart from it being experimental?

    What exactly are the glitches?

In a nutshell, the opensource nvidia and ati drivers are borked, and there have been instances of X creating 100% cpu load (although this appears to only happen at 4 in the monring, something to do with logrotate!)

You must at least select the vesa driver if your machine has an nvidia or ati graphics card (although I don't believe that the problem is quite so severe with ati, don't know personally as I use nvidia cards). Otherwise X will not start (alternatively you could get the nvidia driver from nvidia before installing, and run it immediately after install, but make sure your kernel source is installed first).

  11. e.g distrowatch. ;)

I read the "very brief" snippet at distrowatch, i'm surprised that the author did not stress the following enough:

and includes a development version of the X.Org X window system

As always, it is a good idea to test the product before spending money on it.

Something, IMHO, every noob should be made aware of!!!
