  1. The mouse connected to USB port work as before, no Thumb button recognized by "xev" /dev/usbmouse exist. even I didn't run "insmod usbmouse" I believe the reboot fixed it, as reboot often do. I am installing 2006 on my desktop in dual boot with XP and I will remember this trick.
  2. Thank's for reply I have verified that the file exist in the directory. I have not changed the kernel. It is the original 10.1 kernel. Confusing??????
  3. Hello quiet friends, I installed 2006 but failed. Installation vent smoothly all the way but stopped during Bootloader install with the message: "Installation of bootloader failed. The following error occurred: : fatal : Open /dev/sda : No such device or address" Can somebody please explain what went wrong. All my hardware was connected and turned on, even the USB thumb-drive was inserted. I choose a free area on my main hard-disk where XP is. established / hda 9 4 Gb Swap hda 10 1 Gb /home hda 11 6 Gb /opt hda 12 5 Gb (to be used for later testing of new versions) All partitions was formated. I added Opera 8.5 and some games in the software section but did not change anything in the mdv default selection. The installation stopped and I had to reboot back to XP Then the network was down. Internet connection could not be established (error 628: disconnected). Cannot ping main from client or main to client. I will fix this since I believe it is the stupid MS firewall settings. Activated on the wireless modem and deactivated on the local are network will do the trick. My virus program AVG has to be reinstalled. I run network and Internet setup and Internet connection can now be established on the main (XP box).
  4. Hello This is what I get: [arne3@192 arne3]$ uname -a Linux 192.168.1.1 2.6.8.1-12mdk #1 Fri Oct 1 12:53:41 CEST 2004 i686 Pentium II (Deschutes) unknown GNU/Linux [arne3@192 arne3]$ su Password: [root@192 arne3]# rmmod usbmouse [root@192 arne3]# insmod /lib/modules/2.6.8.1-12mdk/kernel/drivers/usb/input/usbmouse.ko.gz insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.8.1-12mdk/kernel/drivers/usb/input/usbmouse.ko.gz': -1 Invalid module format Whats wrong?
  5. Hello Guys, I refuse to believe that no one have any tip or advice. Come on guys whats wrong? Was it to much information or not relevant information? Was I not polite or..... Reading a lot on the forum I have come to the conclusion that I should: Make a partition on my master disk on 10 Gb from large free space I have and format it to FAT32 and make a clean installation of of 2006OE, (with "./" of 4Gb, swap 1 Gb and Home = 5Gb) with all hardware connected and turned on. AussieJohn advised in another topic: That /Home should be installed in a separat partition. Please how do I do that during installation, John???????? Install boot loader in MBR Un-install the "kat" with "urpme kat" (kill the cat so to speak) I bought a 7 cd Power Pack set from PCTech101 in New York, maybe it has the nVidea driver included. If not, I need to download and install a driver for Nvidea GeForce 6200 but will I have my LCD monitor working without???? If 2006 do not recognize my wireless modem I have to use my notebook mdv 10.1 to download the driver. My wireless modem is uncommon so I worry this will be a problem. With internet established set up my media for urpmi and update all available updates and fixes. Any comments or tips on this, please ???????? I would like to wait for more fixes, but I have to try since the software seller demand a reaction on the quality if the CD's. How can I check the disk without installing. I have downloaded the MD5sum for windows but I have never done this before so help will be appreciated. Would you recommend me to wait or just go on with it now since nothing in my present setup will be destroyed, right ???????????????????????
  6. Hello Ixthusdan, O yes I have tried to get my logitech MouseManPlus Optical Wireless with 6 buttons including the wheel to work for a long time in mdv 10.1 included all updates. Connected to PS/2 port LB, MB and RB work but not the wheel and not the thumb button. Connected to USB port: LB, MB, RB and wheel (up and down) (button 4 and 5) but Thumb button don't work. I imagine I need to refer my kernel version in "insmod"???? By the way what command to use to get the kernel version????? You didn't mention if your mouse is connected to PS/2 or USB port.
  7. Hello Guys, I am preparing my self to receive 2006 Power Pack in mail shortly and approach installation in due time (No hurry). My setup is like this: In my ethernet network I have: A Thinkpad 600 with Pentium II, 230Mb RAM, 4.3Gb disk and CD rom dedicated to Linux mdk 10.1 running smoothly with 99% of problem solved over the last 5 months. I use it to learn Linux. I can't deny that it is a slow machine with very limited resources. A Desktop running XP sp2, Intel motherboard(D850MV), Pentium 4 (1.7 Mhz), 512Mb Rambus DRAM, two Hard disk's, Main 180Gb and a 80Gb (IBM Deskstar), Nvidea 6200 graphic card, 19 inch LCD BENQ monitor (FP91G+), Lite On DVD burner and DVD rom, 2 printers, Canon S820 inkjet and a monochrome Laser printer (Samsung 1610), Wireless modem Sierra Wireless Card (sierra 555) and on board Sound (Intel ICH2 Audio Device). The disk configuration is: Main 180Gb divided in: 20 Gb C: Windows and winapps 2.5 Gb D: Win Swap disk 5 Gb E: Scratch disk (Photoshop) and temp. Internet files 64 Gb F: My Data 10 Gb G: Linux files FAT32 72 Gb H: Free NFTS formatet Slave 80Gb divided as follows: 2.5 Gb I: Free 5 Gb J: Free 64 Gb K: Mirror of F: My Data All the partitions are NTFS except G: Linux FAT32 My options are: 1. Install 2006 on Thinkpad and take out 10.1. Limited resources and slow machine is not tempting. Futhermore 10.1 ruin so nicely and it break my heart to drop it after all the struggle I had to learn and fix problems. 2. Install 2006 in a dual boot with XP on my main hard disk which is must faster than the slave. I have read that it is simpler to install on a different hard disk. Any way I need to get Linux to recognize as much of my hardware as possible. Graphic card and LSD monitor and wireless modem. I also would like to keep my Local area Ethernet network. 3. Install 2006 in dual boot but on the slave hard disk. The free space is only 7.5 Gb and I don't want to change my mirror partition since it saves every ting in real time to secure my precious data which now run on 37 Gb of data, Photos and music. Advice and comments. I will appreciate every advice/hints and/or recommendations you can give. Any indications as to what problem I will run into and what I should be special careful with? I am worried about the huge number, in my opinion, bugs reported as my knowledge are limited. Any tips on when the biggest bugs are fixed? Since I am a heavy user of Photoshop its not likely that that I can drop Windows completely before I have a linux alternative likely "Gimp"?? and that is included in 2006. Bear in mind that my old thinkpad will newer be able to run photo adjustment software of any kind. Is there someone who have experience with transformation from Photoshop to Gimp or pratical experience with Gimp?????
  8. Hello friends, I been away for some times but I have also tried and tried. PARTLY SOLVED theYin Yeti (www.x.org/X11R6.8.2/doc/mouse.4.html) says the TB is defined as button 4. That means I have to move the wheel to no 5 and 6 and that don't work at least not in Protocol "ExplorerPS/2, MouseManPlusPS/2 and Intellimouse. The wheel must be 4 and 5. Consequently the TB is not recognized in "xev". When I define MB as no6 instead of 2, both original "MB2" and TB is recognized as button 6 but then the wheel is not recognized. Apart from this; I am not able to get wheel working at all when I connect it to the PS/2 port. Connected to USB port the wheel work but not the TB. After all this struggle I am sadly come to point when I am willing to forget about the TB. After all the wheel is the most important and LB, MB and RB work as expected. I believe that 2006 Power Pack have solved this problem and I am waiting for the CD's in mail any day now. I thank everybody who have contributed with help on the mouse problem. I am opening a new topic for advise on installing 2006 even though I will wait until some of biggest bugs are sorted out.
  9. theYinYeti, Thank's for your reply. I have tried up to 9 buttons but TB dont seems have any of these. Is it usefull to go higher????????
  10. Thanks ianw1974, So, these 2 chk.... should togehter with xmodmap -e pointer.... be included in modprobe.preload.
  11. Hello friends, I have been very stubborn and stupid. First I updated my linux installation, 185 packages and 528 Mb downloaded. A lengthy ride due to my limited download speed. But what a smooth and convenient ride, only 2 warnings which is not serious for the system and which I will correct later. I did the update just to make sure the system is completely updated. After restarting the xorg I run: [root@192 arne3]# lsusb Bus 001 Device 003: ID 046d:c501 Logitech, Inc. Cordless Mouse Receiver Bus 001 Device 002: ID 05e3:0605 Genesys Logic, Inc. Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 For the first time my mouse is recognized. Then i run: [root@192 input]# lsmod | grep -i usb usb-storage 65504 1 scsi_mod 104044 2 sd_mod,usb-storage usbmouse 4256 0 usbhid 41088 0 usbcore 103172 6 usb-storage,usbmouse,usbhid,uhci-hcd [root@192 X11]# xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 6 3 4 5 2" [root@192 X11]# xmodmap -pp There are 6 pointer buttons defined. Physical Button Button Code 1 1 2 6 3 3 4 4 5 5 6 2 So, now 6 buttons is recognized and dedicated. Hurra!!!!!, as they say in Norway. How did I solved it. Very simple as most things are when you know. the Yin Yety. You where so close, more than close, 2 times when You wrote: You where right all the time. If you at that time had proposed to add Buttons = 6 the problem could have been solved a little bit earlier. But then I would not have learned by go the slow route. I had 2 mouse identity, mouse0 and mouse1, and I had 2 entries in xorg.conf because I firmly believed mous0 was for the thinkpad internal substitute for external mouse. It is not, it seems the internal substitute is hard wired. All the time when I was changing and trying different variables for mouse1 nothing happen because the external mouse was controlled by mouse0 and that "InoutDevise" in xorg.conf did not have Option "Buttons" "6" defined. When I entered this line 6 buttons was recognized. How can I avoid running "xmodmap -e pointer" every time I boot , include "xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 6 3 4 5 2" or.....?????????? When I run xev command all the buttons is recognized exept left side Thumb button mapped to number 2. When I run this I was surpriced: [root@192 X11]# chkconfig --list | grep -i 'usb\|plug\|dev\|hard' rawdevices 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off netplugd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off hotplug 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off harddrake 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off udev 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off Can anyone explain this output taken into account all the "off" Finally the remaining problem with thumb button must be solved. Another protocol or...???????? I feel I have done my homework. Can you please help me with the Thumb button??????

    Wireless Mouse?

Yes I have done it. Sorry, it do not solve my problem = get linux to recognize that my mouse have 6 buttons including 2 for the wheel. My middle button has no 2 and my thumb button also has no 2. The protocol I have tried is IMPS/2, ExplorerPS/2, MouseMand+PS/2 and PS/2 Running modmap -pp shows 5 buttons Running xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 4 5 6 replies must have 5 instead of 6 aborting. In xorg.conf I have 2 - two input device section and in ServerLayout the corresponding mouse0 and mouse1 I believe mouse0 is for the internal pointer and mice buttons in Thinkpad. The big question is which protocol support more than 5 buttons. Any idees
  13. Hello bvc, Linux Google don't reveal anything on the "mdv". Do you have a name or anything to help the search or a mirror site. I have: Main, contrib and update + 10.1 OE but nothing there????
  14. Sorry for late answer bvc, Thanks for reply. My modprobe.preload is totally empty. How do I do?..... Just fill in the output you showed or....??????? Please give me some information.
  15. I wrote: This mouse is is not 6 but 8 buttons + wheel Logitech Optical Wireless. I have switched mouse now and running: [root@192 etc]# lsmod | grep evdev evdev 7648 0 [root@192 etc]# cat /proc/bus/input/devices I: Bus=0003 Vendor=046d Product=c506 Version=1600#same vendor but # different N: Name="Logitech USB Receiver" #same P: Phys=usb-0000:00:07.2-1.3/input0 #same H: Handlers=mouse1 event2 ts1 #same B: EV=20007 #different B: KEY=ffff0000 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 #different B: REL=103 #same B: LED=fc00 #same So this confirm the info is uniqe for all mouse's. I was wrong because it didn't create a new "mouse2" and the "event2" is the same. On the other hand the old mouse is not inserted and the new take the same place. I will look closer to other things is changes. Please stand by, I have a good filing in my stomach now
  16. Here it is: [root@192 etc]# sed -n '/Section *"ServerLayout"/,/EndSection/p' /etc/X11/xorg.conf Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "layout1" InputDevice "Keyboard1" "CoreKeyboard" InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer" InputDevice "Mouse1" Screen "screen1" EndSection Maybe or maybe not???????
  17. theYinYeti, Further on the Even Device: You maybe right about not seing how this can solve the problem for all mouses. As far as I can see is based on running this first: # lsmod | grep evdev # cat /proc/bus/input/devices Which gives: I: Bus=0003 Vendor=046d Product=c501 Version=0910 N: Name="Logitech USB Receiver" P: Phys=usb-0000:00:07.2-1/input0 # see comment 1 below H: Handlers=mouse1 event2 ts1 # see comment 2 below B: EV=2000f B: KEY=1f0000 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 B: REL=103 B: ABS=100 0 B: LED=fc00 Ad 1. I have tried to move this mouse around to many USB ports and P: stays the same exept "-1 changed to the actual number for that USB port. Ad 2. When I run these 2 command the first time I didn't have any mouse1. So it was created by the "evdev" command. Secondly the "event2" stays the same no matter wich port I used. I even mounted other USB devices with the mouse disconnected and when I plugged it in again it always come up "event2" I will try to mounth my mouse on XP box with 6 buttons and a wheel and se if I can confirm the above observation. I will report back What du you think????????
  18. Hello again, theYinYeti: I looked at another tread where you asked for this output: [root@192 etc]# lsmod | grep -i usb usbmouse 4256 0 usbhid 41088 0 usbcore 103172 5 usbmouse,usbhid,uhci-hcd [root@192 etc]# chkconfig --list | grep -i 'usb\|plug\|dev\|hard' rawdevices 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off netplugd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off hotplug 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off harddrake 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off udev 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off [root@192 etc]# sed -n '/Section *"InputDevice"/,/EndSection/ p' /etc/X11/xorg.conf Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse1" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/input/usbmouse" Option "Buttons" "8" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" Option "Resolution" "400" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/psaux" #mouse" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes" EndSection Any clues???????????
  19. Hello helpful friends, Thanks for replies. theYinYeti: I have followed your HOWTO to the point. In earlier replies I have shown you what I put in xorg.conf and when I run xmodmap it accept only maximum 5 buttons, not 6 buttons as I have. This 5 button limitation is not set by me, not by the mouse so it must somewhere in linux mdk 10.1. Xorg is updated to the latest version. Most likely the version of my protocol "ExplorerPS/2" impose this limitation. I have tried many protocol's but I stumble to this 5 button maximum all the time. How can I check which protocol's is installed and ready to use and which is available trough urpmi????? So in general. I have noted "Aussie" was surprised that so many have problem with wheel mouse and the rest have no problem at all. I join the club but unfortunately I am not in the lucky part of this club. Secondly why on earth have MDK not solved this long time ago, it's a disgrace. After all I been trough a lot of problem and found solution with great help from this forum in the last 5 months since I started. I could not at any time, even in my wildest dream, that a mouse wheel should be the most difficult one. My mouse is among the most frequently used mouse in the world and renown for quality. I don't understand. Status. My mouse connected to USB recognize all buttons and the wheel and work fine. Only TB and MB have the same button number. I don't mind using the USB connection. Furthermore it works without any set up. Plug it in and it work like a charm. Options. 1. Be satisfied with my present status 2. Go the Event Device route, see my earlier replies and for the one interested one look at this website: http://www.linux-gamers.net/modules/wfsect...hp?articleid=46. Have anyone tried this before? If so, please respond. 3. Go the Imwheel way. Interesting but look a little bit complicated for a newbie. Secondly maybe it will not solve my 6 Button problem. Anyone have experience with it??? 4. bvc mentioned "mdv" I don't know what that is and no "man page" is available. I will google. Conclusion. I don't like to give up so I will pursue this issue until it is completely solved satisfactory for me. Any comment's from anyone will be highly appreciated. Which option and there's priority are very interesting. Thanks again
  20. This is what I got: [root@192 arne3]# xmodmap -display :0 -e "pointer = 1 2 3 8 7 4 5 6" >/dev/null2>&1 xmodmap: commandline:0: bad number of buttons, must have 5 instead of 8 xmodmap: 1 error encountered, aborting. [root@192 arne3]# xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 8 7 4 5 6" xmodmap: commandline:0: bad number of buttons, must have 5 instead of 8 xmodmap: 1 error encountered, aborting. [root@192 arne3]# xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 6 3 4 5 2" xmodmap: commandline:0: bad number of buttons, must have 5 instead of 6 xmodmap: 1 error encountered, aborting. Either the protocol don't suport more than 6 buttons, unlikely since you can use more than 5 buttons or could it be that " -display :0" points to the generic PS/2 port device. Can you please explain this argument????
  21. Thanks for reply. I will follow your advice anmd follow your HOWTO. The status is; when my mouse i conneted to USB: All my buttons are recognized and work and my wheel is working as well, but MB and Thumbutton is both = 2 When my mouse is connected to PS/2 port: Only LB=1, and RB=3 are recognized and works The following code as in your HOWTO applied in addition to the existing Input section: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse1" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/usbmouse" Option "Buttons" "8" #Option "XAxisMapping" "4 5" #since this is what I have Option "Resolution" "400" And in ServerLayout I will put: "ServerLayout" InputDevice "Mouse1" I will report back, thank's
  22. OK I was thinking you meant Basic as opposite to eventdriven drivers. This it what I been trying sofar: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "mouse1" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mouse1" Option "SendCoreEvents" Option "Buttons" "6" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" and in "ServerLayout" I added this line: InputDevice "mouse1" When I try this I normally reboot. Can you please tell me how to log off X.org and log on without reboot since it will be more conveniant and faster???? Thanks for hanging on
  23. I have no preference and I need help so we go back to what you call basic. I dont mind using the usb port. I can confirm that UB=4 and DB=5 MB=2 I have not tried to use Basic as you call it or any Protocol yet. Can we take from there, please
  24. That was a heavy one 66Mb in all 6 packages but urpmi is a champ. My god what a smoth ride, I am very impressed. Yes my xev command is working. Without any reason I plugged the mouse (which is a USB mouse) into my multiUSB reader and then the wheel was working like a charm. No setup no alterations, why???? xev gives: LB=1, MB=2, RB=3, Thumb button=2. I cannot get wheelUP and wheelDown number since xev enters text in the teminal continuesly and stop when I delete xev window, no button numbers is shown. Is this OK since it must be 4 and 5 right??? I then run: lsmod l grep evdev cat /proc/bus/input/devices with the mouse in USBport and got (deleted the keyboard output): I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0002 Product=0001 Version=0000 N: Name="PS/2 Generic Mouse" P: Phys=isa0060/serio1/input0 H: Handlers=mouse0 event0 ts0 B: EV=7 B: KEY=70000 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 B: REL=3 I: Bus=0003 Vendor=046d Product=c501 Version=0910 N: Name="Logitech USB Receiver" P: Phys=usb-0000:00:07.2-1.3/input0 H: Handlers=mouse1 event2 ts1 <---------- the line of interest B: EV=2000f B: KEY=1f0000 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 B: REL=103 B: ABS=100 0 B: LED=fc00 google to http://www.linux-gamers.net/modules/wfsect...hp?articleid=46 and found what looks like a good aproach. They recommend to add the following section to xorg.conf: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "mouse[1]" Driver "evdev" Option "device" "/dev/input/event2" #(cat /proc/bus/input/devices) Option "name" "Logitech MouseMan+" EndSection In the code I have put in the my case info, see above. I believe this section is not complete at least Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" should be added.????? What's your opinion about this?????? My mouse is 4 buttons + 2 for the wheel, all togehter 6. According to your HOWTO I would like use the thumb button instead of MB wheel button. So my should be: xmodmap -display :0 -e "pointer = 1 6 3 4 5 2 Is this correct??????? I order to avoid running this "xmodmap...." every time I boot a script has to be made. If so, How should the script look like and where should I place it in mdk 10.1???? Please give the details since my script knowledge is poor.
  25. I have Main, contrib and updates + The 6 cd's urpmf bin/xev gives: X11R6-contrib: /usr/X11R6/bin/xev X11R6-contrib: /usr/X11R6/bin/xev X11R6-contrib: /usr/X11R6/bin/xev 3 times that strange. I downloaded the media just last week and have not updated yet. Is my media not in order then????? Should I run urpmi X11R6-contrib ?????? arne
