  1. tyme Thank's. It strange, this was provided as a security measure---and it works opposite in a way. Anyway I appreciate your reply. Now I have installed abiword, but the abiword menu item don't show up in the kde start menu. I am trying to add this item in kde. Do you know how to do it?? Secondly I would like to put Abiword in the "bottom panel with a link to a logfile so when I open abiword it automatically loads the logfile. When I use the add non kde application and write abiword /home/arne3/lognotes I am told lognotes is not executable (and cannot be used) Do you now how to do it???? I would appreciate your help
  2. Hello Guys, I would like to install abiword in my linux box because I use Abiword on my win xp box as well. I have 2 rpm mdk packages and when I try to install them in 10.1 official I get this messages: I have installed this program before and it works OK but at the same time I have to admit that kde is unstable. I don't know if this program is the reason, but you know in searching for errors......you have to turn every stone and this is one of them. The reason I neglected this warnings before was someone in this forum saying this is bugs in 10.1. If that's true I must say this very confusing for newbies, like me. Can anybody enlighten me or pointing me to a source that explain.
  3. Hello I need to connect two 2 computer, one xp and one linux box. Can you recommend how and what type of connection. If wireless, who has a driver for linux. gratefull for
  4. devries, In Thinkpad600 it's not possible to access BIOS with the F1 key. I think plugnplay is enabled thinking back to the time I used it with win98 SE. After I moved to linux I can not access BIOS. I followed the advice on the link (excluding all the irq's) but still the screen and the ps/2 mouse freeze. Maybe the irq's in thinkpad are different. Taken out the card release the freezing on both. Maybe it would be possible to try and fail on exclude different irq's. How many irq's is there? I will try find out on IBM website. Any tip/idee for a newbie ??????????
  5. Hello, I try to get my PCMCIA to work in mdk 10.1. I have found 2 promising procedures I want to try. During boot /var/log/messages loads the PCMCIA adapter loads and the "controller" report it's watching 2 ports on the adapter. After I have made input in the text in /etc/pcmcia/config and added SW_555_SER.dat to /etc/pcmcia/cis/ and reboot Then I put in card and a green light starts blinking BUT LINUX FREEZE and a hard reboot (take out the electric plug) is the only way. When I try to put in the card again a yellow light is blinking and it freezes agin. But now I can do a proper reboot. The card was not in the computer during installation. What can this be? Is it some software that must installed from the distroCD. Can it be a mount/unmount thing. or........... Please I need
  6. Hello Guys, I had a 2 months fight to get my Winmodem (mwave) working just to discover that my phone line was so bad that any practical use was impossible. On my windows box I use Sierra pcmcia Card that works fine and much faster. Is it possible to get this working on my linux-box without to much problem (newbie)?? What is the best way to go? ndiswrapper ....or....? I have aRTee stuff on free tip.... Anybody gone this route before? Can anybody give me a step by step path. I have read several replies in this forum but cant find this card solution. I have tried one solution by an unofficial Sierra linux solution but no luck. Please
  7. Hello Guys, Yes I run kde under mdk 10.1 on my old thinkpad 600. I didn't install gnome, developer, game or open office software. My pc speck is at the bottom of this reply. I have reinstalled 10.1 many times since I am in learning mode and every time it works nice. I agree that more RAM is better but I just want to mention that 10.1 with KDE works nice on my 128Mb RAM and thats a fact. :D
  8. devries Thank's for reply and the clarification. I expected to find supemount here, but since I am a newbie .... My lsmod look like this: [root@localhost arne2]# lsmod Module Size Used by md5 3584 1 ipv6 230916 8 rfcomm 32348 0 l2cap 19876 5 rfcomm bluetooth 39076 4 rfcomm,l2cap snd-seq-oss 31232 0 snd-seq-midi-event 6080 1 snd-seq-oss snd-seq 47440 4 snd-seq-oss,snd-seq-midi-event snd-pcm-oss 49480 0 snd-mixer-oss 17376 1 snd-pcm-oss snd-cs4236 13096 1 snd-opl3-lib 8448 1 snd-cs4236 snd-hwdep 6916 1 snd-opl3-lib snd-cs4236-lib 14048 1 snd-cs4236 snd-mpu401-uart 5856 1 snd-cs4236 snd-rawmidi 19300 1 snd-mpu401-uart snd-seq-device 6344 4 snd-seq-oss,snd-seq,snd-opl3-lib,snd-rawmidi snd-cs4231-lib 22080 2 snd-cs4236,snd-cs4236-lib snd-pcm 81800 3 snd-pcm-oss,snd-cs4236-lib,snd-cs4231-lib snd-timer 20356 4 snd-seq,snd-opl3-lib,snd-cs4231-lib,snd-pcm snd-page-alloc 7400 2 snd-cs4231-lib,snd-pcm snd 45988 16 snd-seq-oss,snd-seq,snd-pcm-oss,snd-mixer-oss,snd-cs4236,snd-opl3-lib,snd-hwdep,snd-cs4236-lib, snd-mpu401-uart,snd-rawmidi,snd-seq-device,snd-cs4231-lib,snd-pcm,snd-timer soundcore 7008 1 snd af_packet 16072 0 floppy 55088 0 ds 17572 4 yenta_socket 18624 0 pcmcia_core 59972 2 ds,yenta_socket ide-cd 37280 1 cdrom 37724 1 ide-cd loop 12520 0 uhci-hcd 28752 0 usbcore 103172 3 uhci-hcd ext3 120680 2 jbd 49080 1 ext3 _______________________________________ I know my floppy user supermount when it's connected. I also expected to find supermont in my fstab on usb like f.ex thumbdrive but I have 'none'. I guess I have to live with mdk using different mount/unmount setup for different peripherals even tough it would be nice to why.
  9. Leo, Yes it did a little bit. I didn't know about udev and hotplug before and this is useful. In my box the entry removable is there even the thumbdrive is not. Yes, thats what people say. I have taken out the thumbdrive many times without unmounting. I have not lost any thing. And you do the same. This confuse me and I would like to make this completely clear to be able to learn linux. Thank's for your response
  10. Hello Guys, I see artic and AussieJohn says that 128 Mb ram is to little to you Linux distro. I am a newbie but I have run 10.1 on mine 128 Mb for 3 months now and its OK. A little bit slow in graphic mode but the shell are fast.
  11. Hello guys, In many articles and books I am reminded the almost absolute need for mount/unmont. My fstab shows : noatime for harddisk auto for CDrom and nothing for thumbdrive 'none /proc/ proc defaults 0 0' Other places is mentioned 'supermount' On my linux I can put in my thumbdrive, no need for mount/unmount. My CDrom don't need any mount/unmount but that is understandable because fstab show 'auto' For a newbie like me this is very confusing. Can anybody point me to where this is explained in some details since I cannot be the only one. [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  12. Kristi, I had the same problem until I installed Abiword on both computers and used abiword's default format. My thumbdrive with FAT32 format can be used on both computers for transferring text files back and forth. Unfortunately it's not included in 10.1 but can be found on Mandriva mirror site. If you get into trouble again this is an option.
  13. Hello SoulSe and devries Today I can after 3 months with Linux for the second time celebrate! After 2 months I celebrated that I got so called Winmodem (mwave) to work and today I can celebrate MY SOUND is working!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am writing this while listening to Ave Maria and Andrea Bocelli. SoulSe. Searching the net gave only one response but the file where not available at the site. Searching this forum finally led me to 2 replies which gave the needed help. linux_or_bust replied on Nov 28 2004, 11:38 PM: I discovered that alsaconf was not installed during setup. The second reply was: JonEberger replied on Dec 1 2004, 04:37 AM advice to install alsa-utils. Then everything was easy and successful and I am very happy. Thanks..thanks both of you so much for help. Great thanks also to the two guys who took the time to wrote how they solved their problem. Without wonderful people like you linux would remain a toy for geeks.
  14. Devries You are right it's Art..... I will search the Board. SoulSe At boot it looks like the message come during KDE setup. Also when I visit KDE sound system, and change something, in the graphical mode the message shows again which indicate it's a KDE problem, right ??? How do I disable KDE Sound system? I will search the web for drivers but taken into account the old notebook I use it's not likely I will find anything. Thanks for your response, both of you
  15. Hello guys, I am trying to get my sound to work on mdk 10.1 It maybe a small issue but for a newbie like me it's to much. My sound system chip is Crystal4237B When I boot I get this message: dsp is a driver or ? Any way it's not there. Can anyone direct me or tip me how to get it working???????
  16. Hello all, Emacs have an interactive tutorial to help new bies. When I try to load it from emacs help menu it cannot find it in the path: /usr/share/emacs/21.3/etc/TUTORIAL I can see that Mandriva have edited the program. Can anybody please tell where it is and how to get it working.
  17. Hello pmpatrick, I had this problem for a long time. Since I am new to Linux when things like this happens I normally believe it is me doing something wrong. Yes your work around solved the problem. Thank's
  18. Hello Guys, I post this here since it is a winmodem (internal chip) After a long struggle I have my mwave modem up and working. I use mdk 10.1 official, Thinkpad 600 with mwave modem. I use 'mwavem-2.0-1.i386.rpm' downloaded from rpmseek.com and wvdial for testing modem availability. I have ttyS1, have set setserial and the correct symbolic link. Both webbrowsers work (Opera and konqe..something) and E-mail work (Opera). After I boot or reboot it do not work and mwavem cannot start. and I get this /var/log/messages: Then I try (1): Second try: AND THEN EVERYTHING IS OK UNTIL NEXT BOOT. But I can see that KDE don't work as usual. Since the mwavem I downloaded is not an 'mdk....rpm' could it be this or should I find a source (src) and compile to mdk..rpm. I am little bit hesitant since I have never done it before and I am not a geek. Or... could it be other things which can be wrong. Since my modem don't work stable yet and the phone line is of bad quality I cannot use urpm outside media. Maybe there is a mwavem..mdk..rpm out there somewhere. Look forward to your response and help/advice. please [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  19. Hello devries, Your first option seems to work OK, I can open Home. You said Copy the old stuff you like into the new .kde. I have looked the old and the new. In the old one I have env/ and shutdown/ which is not in the new kde. In env/ is only start-qpg-agent.sh* and in shutdown/ is only stop-qpg-agent.sh* I can se that my old .kde Autostart/ have 'alignment-icons.desktop' which the new one don't have after reboot. Since I run in a very basic mode, to learn linux, maybe it's not important to copy any old stuff into the new .kde. I have installed abiword, mwavem for my mwave modem and wvddial for testing internet access and basically playing around. What do you think? Can you briefly explain: what is name/ and name@ This forum is full of one recommendation; Make a home partition so when you need to reinstall you keep your data. The problem I had is that OK I have my data but kde crashed. Is this normal or did I do something wrong during reinstall mdk 10.1 Grateful for your response to this. :P :P
  20. Thank' devries, Yes, I will try tomorrow. here is gmt + 7 hours. I will keep you posted. Third option reinstall with home as well, since I have everyting in home on my thump drive?????
  21. Hello devries, Thank's Sorry I am not able to copy the errors since this happen on my laptop with no connection and a lot of errors from KDE when I try to copy to my desktop where I write this. What do recommend me to do?
  22. Hello Guys, After reinstall I cannot start Home from the menu or from the thumbnail. from the menu I try to start but then it dies. I kept my old partitions which is / , swap , and home and did not reformat home. Any tip please????
  23. devries, Thanks I will follow your advice and rebuild from scratch. urpme worked fine. For the rebuild of hdlist I get the following: "[root@localhost arne]# /var/lib/urpmi/hdlist.* bash: /var/lib/urpmi/hdlist.Commercial Applications CD 6 (cdrom10).cz: Permission denied. I run mdk 10.1 official with 6 cd. Please enlighten me.
  24. Hello Guys, Pretty new to Linux but learning small pieces every day. I try to get my soft modem on my thinkpad to work in mdk 10.1 official. I have downloaded and installed 'mwavem-2.0-1.i386.rpm' from rpmseek.com It worked in the beginning but quickly it stopped working. When I installed it rpm didn't show any failed dependencies. Now I want to delete it and install it again then I get this: What is the meaning? It looks like a paradox. When I downloaded this package from rpmseek.com I got the following info: When running the rpm no dependencies was mentioned. When I look up in mdk 10.1 these Requires (Se above) was marked (developers). My question here is: Did rpm recognize the downloaded package 'mwavem...' and checked for dependencies??????????? On the rpmseek website it shows 14 different mwavem. Maybe the one I pick was the wrong one. Here are the alternatives: Can anybody advice which one is best suited for mdk 10.1??????? Please a need help.
  25. Hello Guys. I try think of what is wrong. Mandriva 10.1 have only the driver mwave and not the control program 'mwavem' installed and it is not included at mdk 10.1 official (6 cd) at all. I downloaded it from "rpmseek.com" 'mwavem-2.0-1.i386.rpm' and installed it, dependensies was not shown. On the website it mentioned some files as required. The closest files I could fin in mdk mentioned it was needed for developers. My question is can mandriva 10.1 tell if dependensies is needed on any rpm file found outside mandriva environment. Just after I installed the mentioned 'wavem*.rpm', I was close to get it work. wvdial.conf discovered it as ttyS1 with speed all the way up to 115. 'Setserial' is not included in the Mandriva default install. I searched the LinuxQuestion.org and there I was advised to run "set serial" (with space). Further search advice me correctly to run "urpmi setserial" (adviced by ianw1974) and my distro had it. I cannot tell exactly when the kde crashed. Maybe because I run the 'set serial'. What happen in the system when you run 'set serial' contrary from 'setserial'???? After running 'setserial' I made a symbolic link 'ln -s /dev/tty0 /dev/modem instead of ln -s /dev/ttyS1 /dev/modem. To correct this I run 'rm -f /dev/modem' and 'ln -s /dev/ttyS1 /dev/modem. The next day when I run wvdial.conf after "modprobe mwave" and "mwavem start". Now I am told that wvdial cannot find the modem starting with tty0 (because it's a link to it) and then tty1 but no luck. What is the difference between ttyx and ttySx, sorry stupid question. Maybe it's the Mwavem which must be reinstalled, maybe rpm I downloaded is not compatible with kde, of yes I have to find another rpm. or....in short, I am lost.
