  1. Aha, so maybe it's not the dvd-slideshow itself that's causing the jerks, but the MPEG compression tool instead? Is there anything I could do about that? Is the compressor configurable / exchangeable? There doesn't seem to be any intermediate output from dvd-slideshow that I could post-process with something else. Or are there any good open-source windows programs that could make a nice slideshow DVD out of a set of photos? (Heresy I know but if you say there's a big difference for your videos...) Or, and this is something that's just occurred to me, I haven't actually tried playing the output on a DVD player, I just assumed that if mplayer shows it jerky then it'll still be jerky when burnt. Have you tried your videos on the DVD player, and is the jerkiness still there?
  2. Just trying out the 2009.1 One Gnome version now... Only things I've noticed so far are that the docs on the CD still refer to 2009.0 (a common oversight for Mandriva), it asks me what keyboard I want and then gives me US anyway, and of course the traditional blaring start jingle at maximum volume is still there (ow, my ears!). And Firefox defaulting to spellchecking in Portuguese again. All of that's fixable with an install of course. Looks nice, runs nice, I particularly like "eye of gnome" for browsing pictures, very simple and usable. So now I'm just trying the disk access to see if I'll have slowness problems (like here and here) - running a grep seems to take a long time but that's probably just because I'm running it from the CD I guess. There's still no mention of anything like that on the errata so maybe it's just a problem with some external drives?
  3. :bump:  Does noone else have the same problem? Is that because it works for you and moves smoothly, or do those who make slideshow DVDs from photos not care about the sliding/panning/zooming effect? (I still haven't managed to understand why zooming & panning gets named after a single bloke (Ken Burns) - it's not as if zooming and panning wasn't invented before...)
  4. Do you really mean slide number? I think it's quite unusual to make slides with Latex, do you maybe mean page number? Depending on your document class the page number should be automatically inserted, but you can change this by modifying the header/footer styles. Try searching for "latex page number" and you should get lots of results.
  5. I'm trying to use dvd-slideshow to make some photos into a movie, but I can't get it to look right. I can cross-fade between the pictures ok, but as soon as I try to use the zoom/pan effect, it all moves really jerkily and looks rubbish. It seems like a common problem because there's a special entry in the FAQ about it (output "shaky or not optimal"). I've tried the suggestions in the FAQ but it still looks rubbish. My screensaver is called "smoothslidesaver" and this does everything perfectly - it zooms and pans and fades and everything looks silky smooth. I just want the same output on a DVD movie. Or if there is any other tool which can do this I'd love to hear - I tried mandvd but the options there seem really limited.
  6. What's that got to do with "Fortran 77 program" ??? It doesn't help to ask questions about zipping and latex and gnuplot in a "fortran 77" thread! But to answer your question, you just told it to output a postscript file and call it "figure.png". So that's what it did. If you want a png file, use "set terminal png".
  7. But it doesn't look like there's a KDE3 option at all! So either it's an upgrade and a switch to KDE4.2, or it's an upgrade and a switch to another desktop, or stick with 2008.1 and stick with KDE 3... But support for 2008.1 runs out in October, apparently.
  8. I haven't got much bad to say about them - the adverts were fairly innocuous and nothing like as annoying as the fortunecity ones became. In fact I only recently moved my linux site from geocities a couple of months ago. Sure there was no ftp and no database but it was free. I'm sure there's still a market for the free website customers, you just need to find a way to make money from the adverts which I guess Yahoo haven't been able to figure out. Or you need to find a way to upsell to the paid version. But people still want free websites, I'm sure. Not everyone wants facebook etc, right?
  9. Yeah, I got that far, but all the utilities I found just exported to other mailbox formats rather than just plain text. I found Hypermail too but that is far more than I need, I'm sure there must be an easier way. I think that only works for single messages though? When I select more than one message I don't get a "save as -> file" option in the menu. And I definitely don't want to save all the messages one by one... It's looking like I may have to roll up my sleeves and do some perl...
  10. I may be missing something obvious here, but I can't find an option in Thunderbird and can't see any addons which do this: What I want is to create a simple backup text file containing my mails. I assumed there would be a generic "export" option and one of the file formats would be a simple text file. Then I can just save the simple text file and use things like grep without having to have a compatible mail program. I know that the Inbox file itself is a text file, but it's got loads of other extraneous stuff in there like boatloads of message headers, plus more annoyingly the attachments as huge inline data blocks. I don't want those, I just want the sender, the timestamp and the message text. Of course I want to keep all this other information in Thunderbird too, I just want to export a subset of the information to a simple, flat text file. Anyone know of an easy way to do this?
  11. Or just made it invisible to guests, whichever way a good move ;)Particularly funny was the bit where they were saying (after being crazily hostile): "see how open to criticism we are? A year ago this thread would have been deleted!" I wonder how many of the posters on that thread have now moved over to Unity?
  12. Yeah, usually around 9 months later or so :P
  13. Brilliant sales pitch, wobo, you got me interested! Thanks! Hey, maybe I'll find my next job there too! :P Anyone else likely to be near Berlin in June?
  14. I wouldn't say I've "been developing" but I had a brief play just to do a proof-of-principle and see how it works, just to try it out. (I wrote a brief summary here which might be somewhat out of date now) I didn't try anjuta or kdevelop but I did try eclipse (with which I'm already familiar for java development) with the cdt plugin. I didn't have any problems installing it or getting it to work but I remember I had to be careful to install the right version of cdt according to which version of eclipse I had. Apart from that, it just worked. Kind of neat, but I didn't have any burning need to write something in C or C++ so I didn't get any farther. Also I'm not sure how those IDEs handle development with Qt, which is what I would really like to dig into (sometime) - Qt relies on a variety of non-standard stuff like pre-processing macros and I've no idea how well you can integrate those tricks with those general IDEs. But with the latest release of Qt I saw they've released their own IDE bundled with their development kit, which may be worth looking into if you're using Qt. I haven't tried this either, though.
  15. Great, thanks for the info, wobo! I like the pics, but they're just of the stands, which I am guessing (maybe wrongly?) is just a small part of the whole thing. Out of interest, were/are you there representing and promoting Mandriva, or mandrivausers.de? I mean, encouraging people to use/buy Mandriva or trying to get users to join the website? Is the main focus trying to sell stuff, like a trade fair, or is it geeks discussing kernel programming, or demonstrations of how to do cool stuff, or a mixture of everything? Dumb question I know but I've never been to one of these things before so I've no idea really what to expect. It certainly sounds like an interesting mix of stuff, from their website. And it's not just linux it's other OSS projects too, right? Also, is everything in German? I can understand it no problem but it might affect who I can encourage to come with me if there are no talks in engllish or other languages.
  16. Has anyone been to this conference called linuxtag? The next one is in June of this year in Berlin, and it sounds interesting - a mixture of stands and displays, talks and discussions, and not just linux stuff but other open source stuff too, apparently. Have you been? Would you recommend it?
  17. The Mandriva wiki says that it is planned for today, but the RC1 came out a few days after the planned date. So maybe this week.
  18. Can we get back to the subject please? I voted for 2008.1 cos I'm very happy with it, and am still wary of jumping into the KDE4 boat. I've tried KDE 4.2 and think it looks very promising, but I'm waiting for things to settle down a bit, until there isn't a confusing mix of KDE3 and KDE4. But as I said I'm in no hurry because 2008.1 works very well for me, very little to complain about. Interesting poll, thanks tux99!
  19. Weird story. Weird that the big guy Texstar would disappear for a year with no contact, weird that he'd come back to resume control just before a release (as if he'd ever be 100% happy with everything), and then very weird that the (female) 2nd-in-command would come out with comments like: Not a particularly brilliant set of pointers in how to motivate volunteer developers... Still, maybe the successor distro will have a catchier name...
  20. I tried to reply to this earlier today but I just kept getting blank pages on preview and submit - but it seems to be fixed now Yes you can use the split command from the command line, to get numbered files. It's the first entry I wrote on my hints and tips page. You will need to give the receiver instructions on how to put them back together again, and depending on what platform they're using it might be easier or more difficult. Plus, if global.com have a problem with what you're trying to upload (and I'm guessing that if it's a 300MB Rar file then they might have good reason to), then they'll just stop you uploading multi-part tar files too. Maybe you should look at alternative distribution methods?
  21. Sorry, haven't tried an arduino (yet) and I don't dabble with cooker either... On the plus side, it all works fine with Debian :)
  22. Nice description! neat and to-the-point! Maybe it would benefit from a mention of the package name on Mandriva for the cryptsetup tool - granted it's pretty obvious and also called "cryptsetup" but it may not be installed on all machines? Also s/exsisting/existing/ :)
  23. I agree, good point. I'd also like the comand "urpmq -i packagename" to tell me whether the package is installed or not. Should be a lot faster than the rpm -qa method.
  24. I haven't got round to upgrading my Etch installation yet, but I've had some chance to play with the live version of Lenny. You can read my review of it here if you're interested! :)
