  1. Thanks for your help, ill get rid of NFS stuff & install & configure samba. just one more question (completely off topic): what does "IMO" means? (english is a second language to me)
  2. thanks for your answers, but i dont really need to do remote administration. (i use VNC for that), all i need is that all boxes (both windows and linux ones) can have shares that can be accessed by all the other boxes. can NFS do this? if so, can you point me in the right direction on how to configure NFS? thanks PS: im sorry about all the questions, but im a complete newby to linux.
  3. im confused, heres exacly what i need: - to access shares on windows boxes from my linux boxes - to access shares on linux boxes from windows boxes - to access shares on lunux boxes from linux boxes - to have a "workgroup" where i can see and access all the boxes (both linux and windows ones) eg, in windows nethood i can see all boxes and in linux network i can see all boxes can i do all this with just nfs? if so, can you point me in the right direction on how to set it up? thanks!
  4. so, if i understand correctly, after removing nfs stuff i WILL be able to access shares on windows and linux boxes, i just wont be able to change permissions on other linux filesistems. is this correct? (sorry about somany questions, im a total noob to linux)
  5. Thanks guys, will look into etc/profile.d
  6. sorry, my mistake, thats exacly what i want, to set environment variables. but if i edit bash_profile, it would only apply to one user right? i would like to set them system wide, (for all users) if i do this in a terminal: echo $BROWSER i get: /usr/bin/epiphany so i need to know what file currently sets $BROWSER so i can modify it to point to firefox, and also to set a couple of extra ones like $JAVA_HOME, etc. can you tell me what file must i edit? thanks
  7. hello, im about to configure samba on my laptop so my other (3 winXP, and 2 linux) boxes can access shares in it. i know how to do it, i have to install samba, possibly swat to configure it the easy way, add samba users, etc. The question is, once i get samba up and running, do i need to keep nfs? i mean the daemons and software, i understand its used to share & conect to shares using nfs in unix or linux, but wont samba do the same thing? so, can i safely kill and remove (permanently) all nfs related stuff? i dont wanna remove nfs stuff only to find out that other stuff no longer works! :) the network is like this; 3 boxes running XP pro 2 boxes running mandrake 10.1 all boxes except the laptop have fixed ips and laptop gets it from dhcp from the ADSL modem/router. internet "sharing" is done via the ADSL modem/router. Thanks!
  8. Hello!, im new to linux, and ill apreciate if you guys could help me out 1.- How do i set something in my path? for example $BROWSER or $JAVA what file must i modify? 2.- im running 10.1 (not LE 2005) on my evo n115 laptop, and i installed both acpi packages and upgraded kernel to latest version (sorry dont remember version), and acpi works fine, but in gnome (and ONLY in gnome, xfce and kde work fine), the battery meter does not work properly, it does report battery level, but does not detect when i switch from AC to battery or viceversa. any way i can fix this? or is there another battery monitor i can use instead? (ibe tried to use klaptop, but doestn work). 3.- ibe read somewhere that there is a driver for my modem (conexiant hsf) specifically for mandrake 10.1, but its NOT free. if someone would happen to have it (or know where i could get it) (free of charge :) ), i would REALLY appreciate it. my email is app_guru@yahoo.com.mx thanks!!
  9. install all ACPI packages (theres 2 of them) in rpmdrake, i solved this problem by doing this, and upgrading to the newest kernel (also in mcc rpmdrake) hope this helps
  10. Hello, im taking my first shot at linux, and i installed mandrake 10.1 on my compaq Evo N115 laptop. Everything (except the modem) seemed to worked fine right away, however i noticed i have no ACPI, so i went to MCC and in the loader form, i enabled ACPI, when i restared, it just frozed, after reading A LOT , ibe restored my old lilo.conf file and again i went to MCC and enabled ACPI, but this time i also enabled both force no APIC and force no local APIC. when i restarted i got this: checking if this processor honours the WP bit even in supervisor mode... Ok calibrating delay loop... _ and thats it. it just froze there. The interesting part is, that if i restart the computer, and select the older kernel option from the lilo menu (2427-0Pre21) THEN THE COMPUTER STARTS AND ACPI WORKS JUST FINE! but somethings fail to load, something called udev (it sais it needs 2.6x kernel), and my network adapter also fails to initialize, plus theres no audio, and no support for my external optical mouse. i really dont wanna go back to windoze, please help me out, just remember im a total newby to linux. Thanks! UPDATE: i just upgraded my kernel to 2.6.8.1-24mdk, and now everything works fine! i just need to get my modem working now and im all done.
