Hi, I would like to install Fedora 7 on my old pentium 3 pc. According to their wiki, LiveCD won't work for me because my pc isn't i686 and i don't have a DVD drive. So the only option i have is to install through network. The question is, what directory on a mirror server should i chose?
So far all my attempts failed for various reasons: pc stalls during download, some bad signature in downloaded packages and other integrity errors. How should i install correctly from the network?
Thanks.

I don't remember where i got it, but here a link to my copy: WALL_GUITAR_by_aliansa.jpg

Another think you should check is weather you have a write permission to that partitions in /etc/fstab. You can enable write permissions from MCC:
MCC >> Mount Points >> Create delete and resize hard disk partitions
now pick the partition you want to edit
toggle to expert mode
click on "Options"
check "umask=0"
That's it.

I use Ctrl-Alt-K in KDE to toggle keyboards, I think that was just the KDE default. I understand you want the same for Gnome & KDE, but it might be worth trying Ctrl-Alt-K just to see if it works.
See, i use to chat with my friends on 2 different languages simultaneously, so it could be really annoying to switch using 3 keys.
I'll try though what scarecrow suggested.

In gnome, i use shift+alt to switch keyboard layouts. This option doesn't work in KDE (both on Mandriva 2007.1 and PCLos) even though i've enabled it:
How can i make it work?
Thanks.

What about logging out of kde, running in a root console
mv /home/ilia/.kde /home/ilia/.kdeold
and then trying to log back in?
If it still doesn't work, then something might be wrong with your console ownership. Does user "ilia" login using the /bin/bash shell?
The problem was that the .kde folder was created with root privilege so i changed that, and now everything is ok. But why did that happened at first place?

Hi. I usually usually use mandriva one gnome. Today i tried to install KDE by typing "urpmi task-kde". After all packages were installed, i can't login to KDE. I get an error message on some weird looking X-terminal while booting: "can't find kdestartupconfig... check your installation." ( i don't remember exactly what it said).
Moreover, i can't run kde apps from gnome anymore and if i try to run them through terminal i get this:
[ilia@mdk Desktop]$ konqueror trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/socket-mdk: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/socket-mdk: Permission denied kdeinit: Aborting. bind() failed: : Permission denied Could not bind to socket '/home/ilia/.kde/socket-mdk/kdeinit__0' trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/socket-mdk: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/socket-mdk: Permission denied kdeinit: Aborting. bind() failed: : Permission denied Could not bind to socket '/home/ilia/.kde/socket-mdk/kdeinit__0' trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/cache-mdk: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/cache-mdk: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/socket-mdk: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/socket-mdk: Permission denied kdeinit: Aborting. bind() failed: : Permission denied Could not bind to socket '/home/ilia/.kde/socket-mdk/kdeinit__0' trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/cache-mdk: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/tmp-mdk: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied konqueror: WARNING: KTempFile: Error trying to create /home/ilia/.kde/tmp-mdk/konqueror-crash-XXXXXX.log: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/cache-mdk: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/cache-mdk: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype Browser/View not found trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied konqueror: WARNING: Can't open trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied cp: accessing `/home/ilia/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/bookmarks.xml': Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied konqueror: WARNING: Can't open /home/ilia/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/bookmarks.xml trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied trying to create local folder /home/ilia/.kde/share: Permission denied kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype KonqAboutPage not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype KonqAboutPage not found konqueror: WARNING: KonqFactory::createView : no factory konqueror: WARNING: Profile Loading Error: View creation failed

I'm using Debian, so this may vary a bit for you?
Go to your ~/.thumbnails directory and delete them all. Then go to Applications > System Tools > Configuration Editor > desktop > gnome > thumbnailers > application@pdf > uncheck enable. Do this for every file type you don't want to preview.
Cool, i'll check this...
Yes, it did the trick, thank you!
-
Open Nautilus, Edit/Preferences/Preview, is that any good to you?
No, it is not. I want nautilus to preview image files but not text or pdf files, for example.

Hi.
Is there a way to select which file types to preview in Gnome (nautilus and desktop) like in KDE?
Thanks.

It seems like i solved the problem.
After a fail at firs try, i removed all repos, cleaned the chash and then i tried to rebuild the db. This time the rebuild went smoothly. At this point i backed up the RPM folder as arctic suggested. After all that was done i added some repos and successfully updated the system.
Thank you all for a help!

I've tried what you said and here is the response:
[root@mdk Desktop]# man urpmi [root@mdk Desktop]# urpmi --clean [root@mdk Desktop]# rm -rf /var/lib/rpm/__db* [root@mdk Desktop]# rpm --rebuilddb error: rpmdbNextIterator: skipping h# 1081 Header V3 DSA signature: BAD, key ID 70771ff3

While updating the freshly installed Mandriva 2007.1 One Gnome version urpmi breaks with this massage, that repeats itself in an endless loop:
That never happened on One KDE version. Tried to switch mirrors and the error persisted.
Need your advice on this.
Thanks.

Thank you guys, I've fixed it with your help. Have to admit that this "sudo" thing is really annoying.

Boot ubuntu in runlevel 1 (recovery mode or single user mode in the boot menu, if you don't have those options edit the kernel booting option and add single at the end).
I don't know how to do that.
...or to enable the root account runpasswd root
and that will enable the the ordinary root account like in Mandriva for instance?

Hi there,
After playing for some time with new Ubuntu 7.04 i somehow managed to destroy the account for the firs system user (so called root). Now i don't have an administrative authorities any more. I only have a normal user account that doesn't let me start any of the system GUI tools and I'm not familiar with Ubuntu CLI system tools neither.
The first user was "ilia". Its home folder doesn't exist in "/home". All i have now (if i get it right) is "iliakr" normal user.
Please help.

I do believe that one of the best things that could ever happen to Linux is some major computer company adopting it similar to how Mac adopted BSD and spent a lot of time/money on development and polishing.
That is exactly what i think. Maybe Canonical would be the one.

I'm OK now, set the default shell in userdrake. Thanks everyone !

After the reading i really would like to try Mac. Never seen one alive...

Do you have in your personal folder a .bashrc file, and probably a couple more bash related? ( .bash_profile , .bash_history ).
Get sure you have full access to all of them, and if necessary delete/rename .bash_profile.
Can you post here the contents of .bashrc (if it exists, that is)?
# .bashrc # User specific aliases and functions # Source global definitions if [ -f /etc/bashrc ]; then . /etc/bashrc fi # This line was appended by KDE # Make sure our customised gtkrc file is loaded. export GTK2_RC_FILES=$HOME/.gtkrc-2.0
Userdrake sais i use bsh instead of bash, so i guess that was a problem. I wonder who may have changed this?

How can i check that?

I like what the titlebar says, "Math for fun". Math is always fun.

No, it is not. It is more like an obstacle to me...

If you're a Vista-wary Windows user who would rather switch than fight, should you move to a Linux distro or Apple's OS X? We asked a Mac fan and a Linux advocate to lead a guided tour of each OS.

in Other Linux and Unix Distributions

Well, i have a Fedora 7 Live CD, which runs ok on my other pc (pentium 4) and when i try to load in on pentium 3 i get various buffer I/O errors while loading vmlinuz and the process eventually stalls.
