  1. When I unzipped the firefox1.5.tar.gz, it created a directory named 'firefox'. I haven't move any file, simply did the same as in MDK10.1 (there it works). There is firefox(1.0.7 version) binary in '/usr/bin', the one that was installed with the system, and it works fine.

    When i try to run FF from a terminal, it sais it cannot start due to some shared packages problem. Have any clue?

  2. I don't have a dual boot, but I thought your mandrake partition was on hda6? At least thats what info you gave before from the grub config.

    vmlinuz is just a symlink to the vmlinuz-2.6..... file. The same for the initrd.img as well.

    On your mandrake partition, go into the grub directory and look at the menu.lst file or grub.conf file so you can see more. Otherwise look in the /etc directory for lilo.conf and check compare and match what I posted above for grub to the settings you get in here.

    I didn't find the menu.lst on mdk partition, and this is my lilo.conf

    # File generated by DrakX/drakboot
    # WARNING: do not forget to run lilo after modifying this file

    default="linux"
    boot=/dev/hdc
    map=/boot/map
    keytable=/boot/us.klt
    prompt
    nowarn
    timeout=100
    message=/boot/message
    menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw
    image=/boot/vmlinuz
    label="linux"
    root=/dev/hdc7
    initrd=/boot/initrd.img
    append="acpi=ht resume=/dev/hdc1"
    read-only
    image=/boot/vmlinuz
    label="failsafe"
    root=/dev/hdc7
    initrd=/boot/initrd.img
    append="failsafe acpi=ht resume=/dev/hdc1"
    read-only

    and my grub.conf:

    # grub.conf generated by anaconda
    #
    # Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
    # NOTICE: You do not have a /boot partition. This means that
    # all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /, eg.

    #		  initrd /boot/initrd-version.img
    #boot=/dev/hdc

    	initrd /boot/initrd.img

    when i try to load mandrake, i get this error message: 'Filename must be either anabsolute pathname or blocklist'

  3. loks like i missed you 'mount' tip on previous post :D

    I did what you said, but after reboot - the bootloader sais that it can't find the file i specified.

    - MDK is on hdc7 partition

    - content of mdk's /boot: is there difference between vmlinuz and vmlinuz-2.6.8.1-12mdk ?

    [root@FC4-p3 boot]# ls
    boot.1600			 grub					  map			  System.map-2.6.8.1-12mdk
    config				initrd-2.6.8.1-12mdk.img  message		  us.klt
    config-2.6.8.1-12mdk  initrd.img				message-graphic  vmlinuz
    diag1.img			 kernel.h				  message-text	 vmlinuz-2.6.8.1-12mdk
    diag2.img			 kernel.h-2.6.8.1-12mdk	System.map

    - should i fix the grub.conf to this? :

    kernel vmlinuz-2.6.8.1-12mdk ro root=/dev/hdc7
    initrd initrd-2.6.8.1-12mdk.img root=/dev/hdc7

  4. I don't know how to view the other partitions, that is the main problem.

    if it helps, this is my 'grub.conf' file after iscrewd up the mdk part :rolleyes: :

    default=0
    timeout=5
    splashimage=(hd0,4)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

    title MDK 10.1

  5. I've just finished installing Fedora on my PC as a second boot and i have a problem:

    1. grub can't recognize previously installed MDK10.1' althouh it is installed on another partition. How can i fix this? (mind the fact that i don't know heck in lilo/grub)

    2. how can i view the content of other partitions, when it is not in the file tree?

  6. Let me refraze myself: :D

    I want to learn to configure the systerm without using distro specific tools like MCC, so if i change a distro, i still would be able to tune it my way. I know that Gentoo, Slackware and Arch for instance do not have GUI configuring tools, that is why they considered to be for advansed users.

    The basic step is to enable internet connection so i could get help online.

    - How do i setup this kind of connection lets say in Mandriva or Fedora by using CLI?

    - What are basic & usefull configuration programs/scripts common to all major linux distributions?

    Thanks

  7. Maybe this question was answered allready id different topics but i want to centralize the answers here.

    What are main Linux configuration files and where are they on a disc, so one could edit them from CLI rather from MCC?

    I know about these:

    - /etc/samba/smb.conf -> samba configuration

    - /etc/X11/xorg.conf or Xfree86.conf -> X server configuration

    I would like to know:

    - internet connection

    - USB configure

    - sound fonfigure

    - anything else ...

    thanks

  8. Is there something similar to the fluxbox' slit on other desktop managers? I know there is something but i don't what it is and how it works. It looks like a set of applets that show PC's stats. Can you help me with that please?

    look for instance on the left top side of this screen:
