  1. Hi Polemicz Yep, there are many workgroups and all are restricted for students with accounts only. some workgroups dont even allow student accounts/passwds. I was mistaken, I thought since the internet connection is T1/LAN and we are oncampus, I thought all are inside a single network. Thanks.
  2. Okay, Now I got it. Again thanks for being elaborative. Now I had to stop trying samba to work. I thought there should be some way that I can work it out. After your reply, I understood what it is and why is it called as server. So I guess all servers like apache, samba, etc, all work the same.
  3. Thanks aioshin for the quick reply. sorry, I am a newbie, yes I have the swat installed in my system, because I am a newbie, I acted smart by saying samba port as 901. I suppose my computer is connected to my school network directly since I live on campus and I am in the LAN, but dont know which group I am in. I will find it out soon. So what I understood from your reply is that Samba is meant to connect Linux based computer to a windows based computer provided both are in the same network. But then why is it called Samba server? I thought anyone from any corner of the world can access my computer if I make this as a server. My intention is although primarily to share the files from home to school and vice versa, but also partially out of my curiousity and simple goal of making it as a server and be able to connect to it from any computer. So I guess I had to use the ssh or wsftp which I am using already. Thanks for your elaborate reply, GoSooner.
  4. I thought I will also join this discussion. I am also stuck up setting up my samba. My IP address: 129.15.209.213, and the samba port 901. I am using mandrake 10.0, with 2.6 kernel, and have installed samba server just now. 1) when I type http://localhost:901, I could see, samba home page, with missing images. says can't open include/header.html, as well as in the bottom, can't open include/welcome.html. 2) When I typed http://129.15.209.213:901, it says "The document contains no Data". 3) My objective is to set this home computer on Linux (mandrake), and then access my files from my school where I can operate on Windows only. Also I am not sure whether I can add this home computer to the groups I see on the Network. 4) Also the firewall is off, and I chose to allow all users in the samba configure tool. 5) And Will I be able to transfer files from my school to this computer at home if I fix this problem, because the whole network (school) is behind the firewall. Thanks for all who take time to read this. GoSooner.
  5. My Sincere Thanks to All of you there.
  6. please correct for the separate harddisk using hdd.
  7. 1. How to add Windows option while booting from Lilo. Also see the point 2 before doing this. You have to edit the lilo or grub config file. If its lilo loader (which i have). It may be in /etc folder. see for lilo.conf file, and edit the file to include these lines other=/dev/hda1 label="windows" table=/dev/hda I am assuming windows is in hda. 2. How to remove old versions of linux kernels or labels: Please dont follow this without some moderator or other experienced user approve this. I will go to System configuration tool to invoke configure your computer, and then choose boot, and then bootloader. In that whatever (you may see lilo with graphical menu), say Next and then you can see the window where you can remove or add bootmenu options. You can also add the windows booting option here, instead of editing the lilo.conf file. If you are editing the lilo.conf using editors like emacs, you have to run lilo to reconfigure or save the settings you modified. Here I think all will be taken care of by the Configuration tool by itself. Hope it helps you. Sooner.
  8. VMWARE is slow and test our patience. I tried VMWARE before, and it takes lot of time to run applications. I would prefer Partition Magic (Boot Magic, I mean). Boot Magic does good job. However you can do without these additional software, since we have grub or lilo to handle elegantly booting multi-OS. Only thing I will say is to FIRST make a rescue boot floppy from your existing Mandrake OS and then follow the guidelines given by devries, moderator.
  9. I wanted to add that I also need to know any tutorial kinda websites to learn where the linux applications are stored, like the basic file structures, and etc. Thanks.
  10. I am a new user, and I have installed Mandrake 10.0 recently. Every thing was working fine. I was just playing around and I had clicked Update in the Media Manager and I got an error message, that the source link was changed or not correct. Also the dialog box said, remove the medium in the left ( the one with incorrect sourcelink) and add to reconfigure it. I thought it will automatically reconfigure them and I removed the medium using remove and when I add a medium, it popped a window with all blank columns and I didnt know which link I removed and what to add now. When I installed, I made a boot floppy and then used ftp server to install the mandrake. the ftp server I selected was ftp://ftp.phys.ttu.edu//pub/mandrakelinux and in that official, 10.0. What I see now on the media manager is like this: 1. Installation CD (ftp1) 2. This is missing and what I recollect was the name is Installation Sources (ftp2) 3. Contrib CD (ftp3) 4. Contrib Sources (ftp4) 5. Jpackage.org (ftp5) 6. Jpackage.org sources (ftp6) 7. update_source 8. updates 9. main 10. contrib I guess 7, 8, 9, and 10 are added by me after installation, as I went to easy urpmi and added the sources by choosing another ftp site. For example, ftp://raven.cslab.vt.edu/pub/linux/mandra...6/Mandrake/RPMS for main, and similarly for updates and contrib. Now I want to know what to keep here, and what to remove, and whether the one I removed is important one. Also I would like to know how to update from Mandrake 10 to 10.1. I thank you for reading this post with patience. The stuff is small but I dont know how to explain it precisely. So I explained everything. Thanks. OU Sooner.
