    Init strings

I know the init strings for my modem I just can't find where the modem commands are located in Gnome in order to change them.

    Init strings

I am using Gnome for the first time and need to find the modem commands. My dial-up does not perform well with ATZ as first string. Where are they, please?
  3. This used to be in the repos but doesn't seem to be now. When I try ./configure I get... configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH See `config.log' for more details. [sandy@localhost kshowmail-3.1.0]$ I have never installed anything other than 'point and click' and so I'm stuck. What's an acceptable C compiler? Where do I get it? ...I really need this wee progam and I'm hoping someone can walk me through this? Sandy [moved from Software by spinynorman]

    Hal daemon

    Well it stopped kicking out the cdrom drive but still stalled at Hal Daemon. Here is a copy of my /mnt (This happened once before, but I had been partitioning and thought I had clipped the Mandriva partition and I ended up re-installing). Perhaps if Hardrake is not running then the addition of the mouse could be affecting things? I haven't knowingly stopped any processes. file:///mnt/sda5/mnt/cdrom file:///mnt/sda5/mnt/cdrom2 file:///mnt/sda5/mnt/floppy file:///mnt/sda5/mnt/sda1 file:///mnt/sda5/mnt/sda10 file:///mnt/sda5/mnt/sda11 file:///mnt/sda5/mnt/sda3 file:///mnt/sda5/mnt/sda8 file:///mnt/sda5/mnt/sda9 file:///mnt/sda5/mnt/sdb1 file:///mnt/sda5/mnt/sdb5 file:///mnt/sda5/mnt/sdb6 and the /etc/fstab /dev/sda5 / ext3 defaults 1 1 /dev/sda7 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=utf8,sync 0 0 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0.users.iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom2 auto umask=0.users.iocharset=utf8,noauto,rw,exec 0 0 /dev/sdb1 /mnt/sdb1 ext3 noauto,users,exec 0 0 /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1 ext3 noauto,users,exec 0 0 /dev/sda10 /mnt/sda10 ext3 noauto,users,exec 0 0 /dev/sda11 /mnt/sda11 ext3 noauto,users,exec 0 0 /dev/sda3 /mnt/sda3 ext3 noauto,users,exec 0 0 /dev/sda8 /mnt/sda8 ext3 noauto,users,exec 0 0 /dev/sda9 /mnt/sda9 ext3 noauto,users,exec 0 0 /dev/sdb5 /mnt/sdb5 ext3 noauto,users,exec 0 0 /dev/sdb6 /mnt/sdb6 ext3 noauto,users,exec 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/sda2 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/sda6 swap swap defaults 0 0

    Hal daemon

I replaced a dvd writer and would like some help with what to put in fstab and /mnt for both the primary CD-rom and slave DVD-writer. I have played around and finally removed references to either in fstab or /mnt. On boot the system hangs after loading Hal daemon. I can post the fstab id you like but the optical drives are no longer in there as I said.

    No, that didn't work. Here is my fdisk for this drive: Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 1 1216 9765625 83 Linux /dev/sda2 1216 1338 976562+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/sda3 1338 4678 26829101+ 83 Linux /dev/sda4 4679 12165 60139327+ 5 Extended /dev/sda5 4679 5871 9582741 83 Linux /dev/sda6 5872 7086 9759456 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/sda7 7087 12165 40797036 83 Linux Mandy is on sda5(/),sda6 and sda7. Perhaps a re-install of Mandy's Grub is required? If so I'll need help. I can get into the file system but I don't know how to re-install Grub. Sandy

    Boot stops

I am having boot up stop after 'Starting Hal daemon....................[OK]' It then opens the CD tray. I must have caused whatever this is by trying to resize an extended partition. Qtparted wouldn't do it but must have changed something. I went in with a live CD and all the partitions 'appear' intact and the numbering hasn't changed or anything like that.
  9. Sorry about that, its what it looked like. Anyway I went into the Bios and changed the setting for the non sata drive from what the shop people had set it too and now it sees the drive at least. I won't waste any more of your time as I don't need Ubuntu and it has cost me hours (I tried to install it on the sata drive and it told me I had four primary partitions already...I have two, I checked). Thank you for your help and again I apologise for wasting your time.
  10. It is slave to the sata drive. I tried (hd1,1) but it tells me the drive does not exist and I think this may be a BIOS setting. I know the people in the shop changed something there to stop the machine from trying to boot the non-sata drive.
  11. I have a sata drive and a slave hdd. I installed Ubuntu on the slave and tried to install its grub to its / partition. I'm not sure I got this right. I just copy the boot information from the menu 1st of any new distro (like Mandriva two weeks ago) onto the menu 1st of the first distro whose MBR is at sda1. I am sticking with Mandriva for sure but wanted to have a look at Gnome on an AMD64 system and as I had Ubuntu anyway I thought I'd try it. I get an Error 17 when I try to boot it. Here is the menu 1st entry. title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.17-10-generic root (hd0,1) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-10-generic root=/dev/hdd2 ro quiet splash initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.17-10-generic It is installed on hdd2 but the boot loader on sda1 gives me an error 17. Should it be hd1 perhaps? [moved from Hardware by spinynorman]

    Stellarium

I had a disaster with a two week old sata drive dying and have spent the last few days installing on dial up. Anyway with the same selections on easy urpmi I don't see stellarium. I also get an error message saying 'Impossible to run unknown Install program'! But then I downloaded Inkscape without a problem. Any ideas about this? Edit I wiped my selections and re-downloaded my mirrors using the control center but stellarium still doesn't show...everything else seems fine...my poor old dial up had about five hours of updates and a couple of small programs...no problems. Has stellarium been removed, perhaps? Doesn't matter, everything I need is working very well and I have another dumb question about partitioning which I will harass the hardware people with.
  13. It worked first crack! (I followed the console commands from pmpatrick). Thanks very much both of you. Now if I wanted to add the / and home of my Mepis distro but not have them mount every boot (users in the fstab?) I could mount them when I wanted from Kwikdisk couldn't I? They are sda1 and sda3 respectively also ext3 Here is the altered fstab: /dev/sda5 / ext3 defaults 1 1 /dev/sda7 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hda /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 /dev/hdb /mnt/cdrom2 auto umask=0,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=utf8,sync 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/sda2 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/sda6 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/hdd5 /mnt/hdd5 ext3 defaults 1 2 I've been googling and I guess I meant noauto above when I said users. I think I could do this now but I still would prefer a bit of hand-holding. Actually I have done it and it seems to work OK. Here is the altered fstab again...please tell me what I should alter with sda1 and sda3. /dev/sda5 / ext3 defaults 1 1 /dev/sda7 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hda /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 /dev/hdb /mnt/cdrom2 auto umask=0,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=utf8,sync 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/sda2 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/sda6 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/hdd5 /mnt/hdd5 ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1 ext3 users,noauto,rw,exec 0 0 /dev/sda3 /mnt/sda3 ext3 users,noauto,rw,exec 0 0 Thanks, Sandy
  14. I have Mandriva on a sata drive and wish to access my second drive for storage. I have been reading about mount points and fstabs on the forum but I am still not sure how to do this. Here is my fstab: /dev/sda5 / ext3 defaults 1 1 /dev/sda7 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hda /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 /dev/hdb /mnt/cdrom2 auto umask=0,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=utf8,sync 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/sda2 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/sda6 swap swap defaults 0 0 My second drive is a single partition which is dev/hdd5 in my other distro but just referred to as hdd in the Control Center. Now in creating a mount point does /dev/hdd(5?) /media/hdd(5?) ext3 users,rw make any sense? It is formatted ext3. I make a folder hdd(5?) in media first, correct? I can probably manage the fstab if I get it mounted properly but I wouldn't mind advice on that too. Thanks, Sandy

    Stellarium

Well I tried again. No go. Obviously the program is not going to load on my architecture. I have a question or two about things related. When I was installing there was never a question about CD4, so what is it for? Also why doesn't it say CD1, CD2,CD3. There was an option for adding the entire CD's to your hard drive. I didn't take it but there is no reason why I shouldn't since I have a tonnage of spare space. Depending on this I might have an fstab question which should be another thread, I guess. Here's what Ive got:- It doesn't look right to me

Put in another download site but no go.(After another 30megs on easyurpmi on dialup!). The depressing thing is I went to my Mepis distro, downloaded and the program runs fine. It's not terribly important but disappointing since I wanted a single distro to run everything and Mandriva is better in the things I have to have...Gimp,Inkscape, Gnucash,Abiword. A pity...too bad.

Actually I downloaded it twice, a big deal on dial up. I reset all of my sources, Easyurpmi and CD's and now it won't let me download at all, Stellarium that is. So I must have changed something but I still can't get the program. Sorry, the following package(s) can't be selected: stellarium-0.8.1-2mdv2007.0.i586 (due to unsatisfied libSDL-1.2.so.0) and why is it calling it i586 when I am using x86_64? Don't tell me I set something wrong again..!

Does anyone with x86_64 have this program launching OK? Mine won't from the menu or the Run command. stellarium-0.8.1-2mdv2007.0 is the download file. I can't find an executable file but I don't really know what to look for. I don't think I have a corrupted file as I downloaded twice.
  22. I was wondering if anybody uses Gnucash on Mepis? I have used mainly PCLinuxOS in the past and the Gnucash is functional and fine. The version in Mandy is much slicker...fair enough, it's newer. But the versions in my Mepis and PCLinuxOS are the same but the Mepis one looks like a kindergarten project Changing fonts doesn't help. If you zoom anything, fonts, lines there are actual gaps not roughness from lack of anti-aliasing. It doesn't affect me, I am using the Mandriva one now, but it sure seemed odd on an otherwise fairly slick distro (associated with Ubuntu too) How does Gnucash look in Ubuntu/Kubuntu?

    Kshowmail

This little program lets you select/delete stuff on the server and is very useful to me to protect my wife's windowbox. I am new to Mandriva (two days) and have adopted this distro because I have a new box with AMD64. Kshowmail doesn't seem to have anything for my architecture. I have the source code but compiling that is out of my league. Does anybody have anything compiled for AMD64 or any hints as to what I should do? Thanks, Sandy
