  1. Hi, thanks for that flightcrank.

I edited the file to set it, as it listed MDKGROUP instead of the one I had initially set. I restarted the service, and checked and nothing appeared. I put this down to that it had to wait a certain amount of time to automatically refresh itself.

I did find though that I could force it by typing smb://workgroupname/ and I could then see the computers, but obviously I just needed to be more patient for the browse list to update.

Feeling much more comfortable now I know a little more about what I'm doing :P

  2. Adam, thanks for that much appreciated. I understand it a bit more now. I'll try another set of mirrors a little later on and hopefully have a bit more luck setting it up!

I'll see if I can get CLAM av too if it's GUI operated. Although from reading before, there aren't too many out there at present for Linux, but most likely will appear at some point.

  3. I now have samba working, but I'm finding that when I type smb:/ in Konquerer it doesn't always list the Windows workgroup that I have.

I have to type smb:/workgroupname/ before I can actually browse it.

This has happened since I changed my workground from MDKGROUP to another workgroup name.

Does the smb take a while to update after you've rebooted the computer? Is there any way of speeding up this process so that it happens more quickly.

I used the wizard to install samba, but is there a GUI configuration tool that can be used, rather than going through the wizard each time?

  4. I've tried that, but having a few problems.

I copied the first line on the list into the CLI, and it was processing, as it listed the CD installations, and the existing update_source and then nothing happened. I did CTRL-C to abort, and thought I would try through the Software Media Manager, but this stopped responding. I had to reboot, as I couldn't do anything with adding media after this (needed to send the killall).

Would this be a problem with the mirrors selected? Is it a trial and error and choose a mirror until they get added?

Is the update_source all I would need, or should I add all the other sources too? Sorry about this, but new to MDK. Am happy to use CLI or GUI to add them.

  5. Many thanks for that. I've seen the way of doing it through the Remove option, and then listing where everything went.

On the EasyURPMI front, is that something I need to do? All I did after initially installing MDK10 was to go to updates, and then found a mirror to connect to and get my system updates that way. What would all the other ones be for?

  6. Great thanks for that. I'm currently using Mandrake 10.0 Official, and I have just been running the RPM file directly, and then supplying the root password when prompted. I take it this isn't the best way to install?

Should I be completing this a different way?

  7. Is there any way I can find out where a package was installed? I just installed F-Prot anti-virus, and the rpm package installed the program, but now I don't know where it is to launch and configure it.

Is there an easy way to find out what package was installed, and where?

As it happens I've just removed it anyway, so also, does anyone know of a good anti-virus package that has a GUI front end? Command line is OK, but would prefer a GUI one if possible. Free ones?

  8. I've read the FAQ on samba setup, which is OK. Just got a couple of questions.

I'm likely to be using the laptop for my home network and office network. Samba faq mentions I need to configure all sorts of things such as usernames and passwords (obviously for accessing the Windows shares).

Is there a more simplified method of enabling samba so I can just see the Windows boxes and associated shares and access, and supply the usernames and passwords as and when I need them?

Basically, I just want to enable samba so I can see the Windows boxes and go from there, as I use different usernames/passwords between my home and office networks. Or am I thinking too much like a Windows user! :P

  9. Let me add the paths and filenames that I had after downloading.

    Website www.java.com

    File downloaded jre-1_5_0_01-linux-i586.rpm.bin

    sh jre-1_5_0_01-linux-i586.rpm.bin

Remove (I used KDE System/Configuration/Packaging/Remove Software) list alphabetically and remove the jre installed option.

Find the jre-1_5_0_01-linux-i586.rpm file and double click this (or run the CLI option if you prefer - I'm new to this so I just use the GUI for now). It will install again (you cannot install over the top if it's already there).

    It should install to usr/java/jre1.5.0_01

Sit yourself in your firefox/plugins directory and type

    ln -s /usr/java/jre1.5.0_01/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so

If you type ll after you've typed it, you should see the link itself, and where it's pointing to. When you then lauch Firefox, go into Preferences and Web Settings and ensure Enable Java is selected, close and rerun Firefox, it'll be working fine.

  10. I managed to get this working last week with Firefox.

I'm using the jre1.5 etc version. How I got it working was as follows:

    1. sh - jre1.5.....rpm.bin (this extracts and installs).

    2. Go into remove and find the jre option listed and select and remove.

    3. Find the rpm (not rpm.bin) and install this.

    4. Do the ln -s to the lib in the ns7 directory under the created usr/java/jre...etc directory.

Then run Firefox, and ensure that in the Preferences that Use Java is selected, and away you go.

  11. I found that all the other apps are OK. I then found that the command for printing in Firefox just said lpr, and apparently (I did a quick search for Firefox as it was just this affected), and it was suggested putting lpr -cups.

I then printed and it came out OK. All the other apps are fine at the moment. Is this common when apps are installed, that you need to alter this? Or will they pick it up automatically?

  12. I just typed it all in, and it went through the config OK, but now when I print (or test print), nothing came off the printer.

Then I decided to add a username and password instead of using guest, and I can now do test prints, but I can't print in Firefox or anything else.

  13. I'm assuming your primary PC is in the middle? And that it has two network cards?

If this is the case, then you need to set up Internet Connection sharing on the Windows XP machine, so that it will route between the two cards. The cards that then end up between your primary and secondary machines will be forced to use 192.168.0.x IP addressing. This may be a bit of trial and error if your two network cards are identical until you get the right ones.

Set the Linux box for DHCP and it will pick up addressing from the Windows XP machine. Obviously you'll need the Windows XP machine to be running to route out to the internet.

  14. Third day of using Linux Mandrake 10.0, and now looking to configure a printer. Having a few problems.

The way I'm trying to configure is as follows:

    System/Configure/Configure Your Desktop/Printers.

When it's loading in the printers, that were configured by default, it comes up with the following error message:

Unable to retrieve the printer list. Error message received from manager:

Connection to CUPS server failed. Check that the CUPS server is correctly installed and running. Error: connection refused.

I ran Configure Your Hardware, and found that CUPS wasn't installed. It is now, so I've got around the error, but I'm having problems trying to see the shared printer attached to the Windows XP machine. How do I get to see it?

I can ping the machine by IP and name, and I did a search using the SMB for Windows printing, and it found the workgroup and machine, but cannot find the printer attached.

    Help!

  15. It must be just the adapter in the laptop. I noticed when I visited the Intel website for updated drivers, it mentioned for X Server or similar (my memory gone!).

When I loaded 10.0, it didn't mention X.Org, so am assuming since it says XFree that this is what it is. Or did they package it as XFree even though it's X.Org? Either way, it's all working fine, so I'm happy with that.

I noticed a thread on upgrading to X.Org, is this necessary or shall I just stick with what I've got (the old addage, if it 'aint broke, don't fix it?). :D

Many thanks for all your help on this, I appreciate it as a newbie user. I'm going to persevere!!! :-)

  16. Hi, thanks for the reply.

I'm OK getting into it. Initially I said no to auto-load, and as you said, I just got a prompt to login and use it at CLI level.

I did try to load XFree, but I just got a blue screen and cross cursor and that was it. So I just turned off, reinstalled and said yes I want auto-load, and then I'm all working fine.

My main reason was, that when I installed the desktop (Dell Optiplex), I set the graphics card, colour depth etc when installing off the CD, but it made no mention about XFree. It was only when I came to my laptop (Toshiba Satellite A10), that when configuring the graphics card, it mentioned XFree as options for me to choose.

This kind of confused me, as I didn't see it with the desktop, and wasn't sure if it was because Mandrake didn't detect the drivers on the CD for the video card. I'm using Mandrake 10.0 Original.

The desktop is using ATI Radeon and detected this no problem. My laptop wanted me to choose a resolution for a Flat Panel, which I set to 1024x768, and then mentioned the XFree bit, and acceleration, configuring the heads independently and then setting the 24bit colour depth.

The graphics card in my laptop is Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME controller, however the default driver I used after selecting the Flat Panel, was Intel 85x.

I'm quite happy with using the XFree as obviously it sounds a requirement, I just wondered why I never saw it mentioned when I installed the desktop.

  17. I really only know two options. I'm not sure what version of Windows you are using, am assuming Windows XP.

This is what you need to do:

Boot from your Linux CD and press F1. Then type rescue and press enter. You want to rescue the LILO boot loader, or whichever one you had chosen to use in the first place. (or boot from the floppy, press F1 and then supply the CD1 and go from there).

However, after it's rescued it you won't see Windows on the list of being able to boot. So boot Linux, and then System/Configuration/Configure your desktop/Boot/Boot Loader (I'm using KDE so I chose through here).

You'll get the screen saying LILO graphical etc, etc, click Next. Click Add, then choose Other (Windows etc). Mine is on /dev/hda1, so choose the relevant partition. OK everything, and you'll now be able to dual boot again.

If you have probs with that, I can only suggest load Windows first, then Linux Mandrake afterwards.

  18. As a new user of Mandrake, first I apologise if you've seen this question before! I did do a search but couldn't find anything that answered my question. Am just trying to understand, as I want to use Linux a lot more.

OK, I've installed on my laptop, and the graphics card didn't list the driver, so I just chose 1024x768 flat panel, chose Intel 85x I think, and then set the colour depth.

It then went on about XFree86 (two options, one hardware accelerated), which I chose the faster one obviously (my previous install I chose not to have it loaded automatically, and I only got command prompt, so I reinstalled to get the GUI loaded as I couldn't figure out how to do it manually).

When I installed on the desktop, it didn't install XFree.

Do laptops have to use XFree or is it just certain video cards if the drivers aren't present?

Am I able to install a graphics driver that doesn't require using XFree? Or is there a benefit of using it?

  19. Excellent, thanks for that. I wasn't sure, as I'm new to this, and want to understand it a bit more and use it.

The laptop does have 1GB of RAM, so I think I should be OK using this option. It didn't appear on the desktop, which made me wonder why it was there.

Thanks for your help, I understood what you wrote :-) so you have nothing to worry about.

My book arrives in a few days, so at least I'll be able to persevere a bit more and learn! Well, that's the idea anyhow.
