  1. I think my wife's machine needs another graphic-card; it runs mva2006 with a pavillion f1523 monitor. Just a good, solid, not too expensive PCI card. Doesn't have to be fast, no games. Any tips? Thanks
  2. Have just been reading some posts about graphic-cards and it occurred to me that I may need a driver for the SPEA video7 card that's now in the machine. How would I go about that, anyone? Thanks
  3. Great, it worked AND I've learnt another linux-command in the process  . Somehow the display-resolution had been changed from 16-bit to 24; changed it back and all's honkey-dorey. Well, not all, because the splash still doesn't work, but I'll try another graphics-card and, who knows, that may work. Many thanks.
  4. Sorry, don't understand. I can't get to a konsole because the screen is blank; I'm assuming that I need to use the rescue-mode of the installation-DVD, and call some utility or another from there. Perhaps you could clarify. Thanks. Edit: Ideally, I would like a utility which updates the system automatically, because I'm not absolutely certain which type of graphic-card I've installed.
  5. The problem with the splash may be associated with the graphics-card. I've installed a oldish PCI-card (V7 Mirage, I think) which has changed the display somewhat; now, after the initial lilo screen (where I select linux) the display goes grey for about 15 seconds, then reverts to the verbose boot-mode. I assume that lilo is trying to display the splash-screen but can't, because the graphics are set up for the old onboard video. The problem is that, on conclusion of boot, the screeen goes blank (graphics problem again?) and I therefore can't alter anything using a GUI  . I remember using a command-line utility once to do just that, but have forgotten its name. Could someone help me out? Don't particularly want to have to re-install the OS. Thanks.
  6. I need to unzip (if that's the correct term  ) a .bz2 file but don't know the syntax. Could someone help me out? Thanks. ps: is there already a post giving tips on this sort of thing? Seem to remember seeing one somewhere ;) [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  7. Well, thanks for the tip, but that didn't work either. In fact, I've never been able to toggle BACK from verbose-mode on any of my mandrake installations (10.1, LE2005 and 2006); perhaps it works on other machines but not on mine. But thanks, once again.
  8. Thanks. Don't know what the problem can be, so will have to just live with it. I've since found out that it doesn't appear to be possible to use grub in the boot-sector of a partition, if that same partition also steers grub in the MBR. There would be a collision, since there is only a single menu.lst. If anyone out there would like to contradict me on this point, I'll be happy to learn how to do it. B) Many thanks, once again, to you both.
  9. Sorry, should have provided that info. The new installation is 'vmlinuz-2.6.12-12mdk', which came from the same DVD as that used on my laptop (and THAT works, splash and all). I don't think that the problem lies with the chainloader (grub?) because the lilo splash-screen appears (where I select linux). It's from this point on that the verbose mode is implemented. And, you mention 'framebuffer splash' enabled; how do I enable this? Thanks.
  10. Well, AFAIK, grub only needs the root partition's name in order to chainload to it, expecting some other loader to do the actual booting. In any case, the grub bit most certainly works, because windoze boots, as does Mva2006 without splash. I've just checked the lilo.conf on my laptop, which contains two extra parameters: append=" acpi=ht resume=/dev/hda6 splash=silent" vga=788 I added these to lilo.conf, ran lilo, rebooted and.....no difference I then went into MCC->Boot->Set up...boots, selected '/dev/hda8' and 'LILO with graphical menu', added a new entry 'linux2006' and the approp image-info -> Finish. The result is below default="linux" boot=/dev/hda8 map=/boot/map keytable=/boot/uk.klt menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw prompt nowarn timeout=100 message=/boot/message image=/boot/vmlinuz label="linux" root=/dev/hda8 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="acpi=ht resume=/dev/hda6 splash=silent" vga=788 image=/boot/vmlinuz label="failsafe" root=/dev/hda8 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="failsafe acpi=ht resume=/dev/hda6" other=/dev/hda1 label="windows" table=/dev/hda image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.12-12mdk label="linux2006" root=/dev/hda8 initrd=/boot/initrd.img Rebooted, selected 'linux2006' and.....no difference. Don't understand it  . Could this be a monitor-driver problem? Perhaps there's another approach. Is it possible to use grub in the MBR to chainload into a partition (that DOES work, I'm sure) and then use grub again in that partition to boot linux? I ask because I'm not aware of multiple versions of menu.lst on a partition (the one currently in hda8/boot/grub is the one used to boot from the MBR), which would tend to preclude this possibility, and I don't want to just try it and risk not being able to reboot the machine. Thanks.
  11. Am having a strange problem with lilo. I've just installed mva2006 onto another machine, which also has windoze 2k-pro on it. I put grub in the MBR and lilo in hda8. Grub looks like this: timeout 10 color black/cyan yellow/cyan shade 1 viewport 3 2 77 22 splashimage (hd0,7)/boot/grub/mdv-grub_splash.xpm.gz default 0 title Mva2006 root (hd0,7) chainloader +1 title windows root (hd0,0) chainloader +1 and lilo like this. default="linux" boot=/dev/hda8 map=/boot/map keytable=/boot/uk.klt menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw prompt nowarn timeout=100 message=/boot/message image=/boot/vmlinuz label="linux" root=/dev/hda8 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="acpi=ht resume=/dev/hda6" image=/boot/vmlinuz label="failsafe" root=/dev/hda8 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="failsafe acpi=ht resume=/dev/hda6" other=/dev/hda1 label="windows" table=/dev/hda When I boot Mva2006 the machine chains correctly to hda8, but, on selection of 'linux', goes straight into verbose-mode, i.e. no splash-screen. It's no problem for ME, but my wife (her machine) gets a bit upset at not having the splash (she thinks that there's something wrong with linux :P ). Can anyone give me a clue about what's going on? Thanks.
  12. I inadvertently started amaroK while Audacity was running and it looks as though the former has grabbed exclusive use of the audio-system  because, when I now try to start Audacity, I get the message: There was an error initializing the audio i/o layer. You will not be able to play or record audio. I assume that it IS possible to arrange for BOTH to access audio. or at the least, to get amaroK to relinquish control. Can someone help me here? Thanks. This is Mdv2006, BTW. Edit: I'd also like the change the mp3-default from amaroK to Audacity; how would I go about that? Thanks, again
  13. Many thanks , enough there to keep me off the streets for a few weeks.
  14. I know a little about the various runtime levels set by the system, but could do with more detail. Could someone help me out with a site, manual or something like that? Thanks
  15. Still can't get eepro to go UP the first time, but at least it now sits on eth0. This is what I did: I deleted ifcfg-eth0, ifcfg-eth1 and ifcfg-sit0 from /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts, then set-up (cable) eth0 in MCC, using 'manually load a driver' . I then restarted the session, as advised; eth0 didn't come UP but at least eepro was still eth0. Interestingly enough, although I definitely DID set gateway = 192.168.1.1, NETWORK=192.168.1.0 in ifcfg-eth0 (are NETWORK and gateway the same??): DEVICE=eth0 BOOTPROTO=static IPADDR=192.168.1.100 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 NETWORK=192.168.1.0 BROADCAST=192.168.1.255 ONBOOT=yes HWADDR=00:00:39:4a:74:8d METRIC=10 MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=yes USERCTL=yes IPV6INIT=no IPV6TO4INIT=no PEERDNS=yes NETMASK=255.255.255.0 IPADDR=192.168.1.100 While I've been typing this I've just noticed that eth0 has come UP (on the icon, anyway), but it clearly IS'NT UP, because neither skype nor konqueror has access to the net. Strange  . OK, I'm completely lost, perhaps I should just admit that the beast has beaten me. I SHUTDOWN the system (seeing that eth0 actually WASN'T UP), started it again and eepro now sits on eth1 (yes, ONE!) and is (what else?) DOWN. WOE is going on? /etc/modprobe.conf contains: alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0 install usb-interface /sbin/modprobe uhci-hcd; /bin/true remove snd-intel8x0 /sbin/modprobe -r snd-pcm-oss; /sbin/modprobe --first-time -r --ignore-remove snd-intel8x0 install snd-intel8x0 /sbin/modprobe --first-time --ignore-install snd-intel8x0 && { /sbin/modprobe snd-pcm-oss; /bin/true; } remove i810_audio /sbin/modprobe --first-time -r --ignore-remove i810_audio install i810_audio /sbin/modprobe --first-time --ignore-install i810_audio alias eth0 eepro10 I haven't got any more time to spare for this at the moment, so I'll give it a rest. Many thanks, anyway, to all who contributed, for your help ;) .

This is becoming a saga; many thanks for your help (and time). One other thing; with all this starting/restarting, I've noticed that the machine doesn't always want to do just that (perhaps it's on the blink  ). Mostly it WILL turn-off or restart (as required) the SECOND time, occasionally it refuses to do it at all and I have to resort to a RESET. Is there any key-combination which will bring me to the log-in screen, because that ALWAYS works. Thanks.
  17. Thanks. I checked both /etc/modprobe.conf and /etc/modprobe.preload, there's no mention of eth0, so its driver would appear to be loaded (or at least an attempt made) somewhere else. I also checked /etc/modprobe.devfs, no mention there of either eth0 or eth1. Interestingly, there is also no mention of the wireless-connection (eth0) in MCC->Hardware, although this nic IS offered for setup in MCC->Network&Internet->New Connection->Wireless Connection (eth0: Intersil PRISM2 11 Mbps). Here are the relevant parts of dmesg.txt (as suggested) for both situations, eth1 DOWN and eth1 UP (simply searching on 'eth'). eth1 DOWN: Linux version 2.6.12-12mdk (apatard@n1.mandriva.com) (gcc version 4.0.1 (4.0.1-5mdk for Mandriva Linux release 2006.0)) #1 Fri Sep 9 18:15:22 CEST 2005 eth0: OEM i82557/i82558 10/100 Ethernet, 00:00:39:4A:74:8D, IRQ 11. 19. Sadly, none of the suggestions has had any affect. However, I vaguely remember reading something about a log-file, which keeps details of processes/modules etc that are started/killed at startup, shutdown (and, presumeably, restart). Could someone tell where this file is kept? Perhaps I can glean some info from it, relating to this problem. Also, I know a little about the various runtime levels set by the system, but could do with more detail. Could someone help me out with a site, manual or something like that? Thanks
  20. I'd like to get to the bottom of this strange problem with my laptop/OS (Tosh-Sat-Pro-4600/LE2005&MVA2006), but need some advice. When I first boot the system following a SHUTDOWN, the LAN-connection is never made. To achieve this I have to RESTART the system and the LAN then comes up alright; normally, I don't even bother to sign-in the first time but restart immediately at the prompt. This problem has been around ever since I went on to broadband (about a year); it appears to be a combination of hardware and software, because: a> the same OS's (LE2005 and MVA2006) work correctly on my desktop, i.e. LAN comes up first time, and b> using Suse 10.1 on the Tosh the LAN comes up first time, too. It would seem that something is reset on SHUTDOWN which is NOT reset on RESTART. I've also noticed, on a few occasions when the system has 'frozen' and I've had to do a manual RESET, that the LAN has come up correctly immediately (no need for a RESTART). I know that this is a long shot, but has anyone else had similar experiences with network-connections and, if so, have you managed to solve them? Thanks.
  21. Well, it didn't work (although I'm not completely convinced that I carried out your instructions correctly), but that is not actually my problem. Whether my ethernet-card (EtherExpress PRO/100) is called eth0 (in LE2005) or eth1 (in mdk 2006), I want to be able to disconnect and reconnect it via the taskbar-icon. This works in LE2005 but, in mdk2006, no sooner do I disconnect it (eth1) than the system reconnects it. Halt... I seem to have fixed it  . I disabled 'netplugd' (in MCC->System->Services) and now eth1 is NOT automatically reconnected (vaguely remember having a similar problem with dial-up). Anyway, please keep your fingers crossed, that this is IT. Thanks for your help.
  22. Sorry, poor explanation on my part. What I meant was that the internet connection (EtherExpress PRO/100) - which BTW is eth0 in LE2005 and eth1 in 2006 (why the changeover? ) - cannot be effectively disabled by right-clicking on the taskbar-icon. When I followed your suggestion and deleted /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1, eth1 was automatically disconnected and I was then unable to reconnect it. THIS is why I had to reinstall it using MCC, which, of course, regenerated /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1. So I'm back to sqare one. Hope this clarifies things.
  23. Something strange has been happening to my LE2005 (and now to mdk2006, which I updated from LE2005Copy) for the past week or so. When I select Menu->Logout, none of the selections in the menu works the first time; the system plays me the tune, then sits there, doing nothing. Only when I repeat the process does it actually turn-off, restart, etc. Quite interesting. No problem, because it eventually DOES work, but I've been thinking that this could be the beginnings of something, well.....nasty. Has anyone else had a similar experience; if so, did you manage to solve it? Thanks.
