  1. I've just installed Timidity++ into my mva2006 box because the MCC-description said that a midi-wav conversion was possible with it. However, I can't find any menu-point which does this, all I can do is PLAY a midi-file. Can anyone say whether or not I need anything else and, if so, what? Alternatively, is there a different midi-wav or midi-mp3 convertor out there? Thanks.
  2. I've tried a number of CDs, same problem. Interestingly, KsCD will read (and play) an audio-CD but the read-failure occurs when I try to access it (the same audio-CD) via KDiskFree. Konquerer (via the Devices-icon on the desktop) also fails to open the CD. Here is my /etc/fstab file: # This file is edited by fstab-sync - see 'man fstab-sync' for details /dev/hda10 / ext3 noatime 1 1 /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom2 auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hde1 /mnt/pcmciafat vfat umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c vfat umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d vfat umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip100 vfat noauto,user 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0
  3. When I try to read a normal data CD I get the following error-message: Could not mount device. The reported error was: /dev/sr0: Invalid argument mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified I'm using mva2006. Could anyone tell me what I have to change to solve the problem? Thanks. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  4. I was wondering if it is possible to execute a script via a link to an icon on the desktop, rather than having to use a konsole (hope this makes sense  ). If it is, how do I set up the link? Thanks.
  5. What I had in mind was to reduce the amount of setting-up which is necessary whenever I go to a new distro, e.g. profiles, additional apps, and copying my scripts from the old distro to the new, etc, etc, etc. Clearly this is not as simple as I imagined, so I won't persue it further. Anyway, many thanks for all your help.
  6. Am I correct in assuming that, if I had a separate /home partition, this would be addressable from LE2005, mdv2006 AND mdv2007? Thanks.
  7. I have just installed openwengo.2.1.1 on my box with mdv2006. All seemed to go well but, when I enter "./wengophone.sh" from the directory "WengoPhone-2.1.1-minsizerel", I get the following error messages: (info) 22:01:46 Wenbox::Wenbox(): Wenbox dll not loaded (info) 22:01:48 void QtLanguage::loadLanguageFromConfig(): no Qt translation available for locale 'en_US' (warn) 22:01:49 static EnumDeviceType::DeviceType EnumDeviceType::toDeviceType(const std::string&): unknown DeviceType= Strangely, the program seems to operate correctly, e.g. I can carry out a test-call. Can anyone say whether or not these messages are significant and, if they are, how do I correct the situation? Also (and this may be connected to the above  ) I have only been able to start the prog via a konsole but would prefer to do so via an icon on the desktop. How would I go about doing this? Thanks
  8. I haven't got the slightest idea what I've done RIGHT - fact is, I did nothing at all, except reboot a day later - but the problem sees to have disappeared . Sorry to have wasted your time and many thanks for your help.
  9. Suddenly I'm getting the message "Error while opening sound device. Please check the output device settings and the project sample rate." when I try to run previously serviceable .mp3 files with Audacity. I checked via System -> Config -> KDE -> Sound -> Sound System, with the following results: (under General) are selected: Enable Sound System, Run with highest priority (232mS) and Auto suspend if idle (after 60 secs); (under Hardware) are selected: ALSA and Full Duplex. These are what I seem to remember setting them to more than a year ago, with no problems since then. I also stopped the sound system, rebooted (just in case) and restarted it, sadly to no avail. I'm using a Tosh Sat Pro 4600, running MV2006. Can someone help me here (again)? Thanks.
  10. I've just installed 2007 Spring and have the following questions: 1. There's no 'Profiles' entry in the MCC main-menu; could anyone say where it has been put? 2. According to Linux-magazine (which provided the DVD) there are "... improved tools for laptop users, such as better ... suspend-to-disk support" Unfortunately the mag does not contain more information and it isn't very obvious how to access this support. 3. I'd like to be able to disable/enable the network-connection without having to enter the root-password each time; is there any way of setting this feature without first deleting the network-interface and then reinstalling it? Does anyone have any tips? Thanks.
  11. Well, I've (apparently) solved the problem  . My system - mva2006 - crashed one day and did an automatic restart; lo and behold, the network was UP on completion of boot. So I experimented a bit and came up with the following solution: when I want to SHUTDOWN I perform a RESTART with a blank floppy in the drive (boot sequence is floppy/HD/CD); when the machine attempts to restart and BIOS complains that there is no OS to boot into, I switch the machine off. When the machine is next started (floppy removed) the network is always UP . It may not be an ideal way of getting around the previous situation, but it seems to be working (the last 4 months, anyway). Hope this may help someone out there.
  12. It's also working for me. I'm considering changing my ident to "just_plain_daft" Many thanks, again
  13. Must be cracking up or becoming paranoid (or just OLD ;) ); never occured to me that it could simply be DOWN. Many thanks, all. Will keep trying.......
  14. I'm experiencing an interesting situation with the site "SAYNOTO0870.COM". No matter how I try to select it (via google, directly, via bookmarks), it starts to load and, after about 5 seconds, locks up, with the tab-indicator just grinding around. Is this likely to be a browser problem or is something sinister going on out there ;) No other sites seem to be affected - as far as I can see, anyway. Any advice?? I'm using 2006, kde, firefox is v1.0.6. Thanks.
  15. I have a number of partially-filled audio-CD's, which I would like to copy on to a single CD. I've tried to do this with k3b, but without success  . Is it possible to do this (with k3b); if so, could someone tell me how, if not, is there another utility out there that can? I'm using mva2006. Thanks.
  16. Forgot to add that I'm using 2006-KDE, where the menu-sequence that you describe is not available; sad, but many thanks, anyway.
  17. I'm having problems with Konqueror as default (i.e. when some site or another needs a browser to telll me something). How do I change this to Mozilla? Haven't been able to find the menu-item to do this  . Thanks
  18. Sorry for the delay with this reply. It's AOK now, many thanks.
  19. I'm trying to install additional software into my mva2006. MCC expects to see the medium "Installation Free DVD" on /dev/hdc (cdrom1); KDiskFree tells me, however, that the DVD-drive is cdrom2 on /dev/sr0, which causes MCC to hang. Is this an alias-problem, and, if so, can someone help me with the syntax? (Oh, and where to put the entry, to make this a permanent solution?). Thanks.
  20. MCC says that only 'perl-Crypt-SSLeay' is installed, possibly not the correct one. Available are: apachessl (6 off), libmatrixssl (2 off), libopenssl (8 off), openssl (2 off), perl(xxx)ssl (12 off) and a pythonssl. Wouldn't know where to start in selecting something from there. Any further tips? Thanks.
  21. Well, I haven't got Opera 9.1 or Firefox 2, but I have the same problem with Konqueror.
  22. Skype now works on my 2006-setup and I thought that I'd give ekiga a whirl. Is it necessary to uninstall skype before installing ekiga, or can they peacefully co-exist? Thanks.
  23. A site which I need regularly tells me (mva2006/Firefox v.1.0.6) that: The page requires a client certificate The page you are attempting to access requires your browser to have a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) client certificate that the Web server will recognize. HTTP Error 403.7 - Forbidden: SSL client certificate is required This site causes no problems on LE2005/Firefox v.1.0.2 and I don't remember having to provide anything there  . Can someone explain what this mssage means and how to solve the problem? Thanks.
  24. I know that hibernate is pretty hardware-dependent and I've not managed to get it to work on any of my mandy installations (10.1, LE2005 and 2006) with my Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600  . Has anyone else got it to work on a laptop and, if so, which model was it? Also, which distro? Thanks. [moved from Hardware by spinynorman]
