  1. Well, I followed your instructions (as root) # umount zstore # mkdir /home/lawrence/zqstore # chown lawrence:lawrence /home/lawrence/zqstore # mount /dev/hda7 /home/lawrence/zqstore setuid=lawrence,setgid=lawrence,exec,users,codepage=850 0 0 but the system refused to mount the partition. It IS possible to mount it, with mount /dev/hda7 /home/lawrence/zqstore but the owner remains root, of course. The current /etc/fstab line is /dev/hda7 /zstore ext3 defaults 1 2 It's probably something small, but I can't see what I'm doing wrong.
  2. Many thanks for all of your replies, the one I've decided to go for is the partition with a mount point in /home/username. Now comes the tricky bit, the dreaded syntax. B) I assume that the option in MCC is "Mount points" followed by "Setting up sharing of your HD partitions"; I've selected "Custom" but am now unsure whether to select SMB or NFS. Could one of you help me further? Many thanks, again.
  3. The cli which you provided, i.e. du -sh `ls` , also lists all the files on the partition, whereas I only want a summary of the directories. Is there an option to do this; haven't been able to find it myself?
  4. I have several mandy-partitions on the same physical HDD (2005LE, 2006, 2007) and each has a large amount of personal data in its /home directory, all essentially the same. Is it possible to place this data in a separate partition (/opt or /usr spring to mind) which can be accessed by all versions; this would save a lot of disk-space and time following installation of the next mandy (2008, for example). Thanks. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  5. Have just repeated the above; this time the pid was 6735 7078 7642 7078. I then tried CTRL+ALT+F2 and "top", but couldn't see any of the mentioned pid number-groups in the resulting list. Could someone tell me what these number-groups in the pid mean, which one (if any) is relevant, and how they are related to the idents given in the "top" list (so that I can kill the offending process)? Thanks
  6. Thanks, that works. But I can also umount the drive, so that possibly doesn't mean much. Will have to wait until it refuses to be unmounted to see if your command still works. Cheers .
  7. I unchecked "sound system", as you suggested, then ran the cl as root, resulting in Doing alsactl to store mixer settings... [ OK ] Shutting down ALSA sound driver (version 1.0.9b): no. (sound is being used by pid 6600 7119 7274 7119)) [FAILED] ALSA driver (version 1.0.9b) is already running. I imagine that it'll be necessary to kill the pid, but I've fogotten how to do that (seem to remember it was ctrl/alt Fx (but which x  ))
  8. Sadly, the audio problem with my mva2006 box has returned (or rather, I'm pretty sure that it was never really solved, I just had a series of lucky coincidences). It started when I played some music on YouTube; thereafter no other audio function operated correctly. It would appear that whichever function YouTube uses (no idea here) does not relinquish the audio-system when it's finished and all other potential users are locked out. For example, Audacicity reports: There was an error initializing the audio i/o layer. You will not be able to play or record audio. Wengo doesn't work either audio-wise, but also doesn't seem to know this because there's no error-message. Rebooting fixes the prob, but that's a sledgehammer solution. Has anyone got any tips on how to reset the audio-system in a more, shall we say, sophisticated manner? ;) BTW, stopping and restarting the sound system does NOT work. Oh, and it's kde, using ALSA, in a Tosh Sat Pro 4600. Thanks.
  9. It's that ol' zip250 again, folks  . It mounts correctly but I now cannot unmount it to change disks; the message Called: umount /dev/sda4 umount: /mnt/zip100: device is busy appears when attempting to unmount in KDiskFree (and in a Root-Konsole). As far as I can see, sda4 is NOT busy, it's doing absolutely nothing. Could the problem be something to do with the manner in which it's mounted in the first place? I assume that mandy is using the entry in /etc/fstat which was previously used to mount the parallel-port zip100; /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip100 vfat noauto, user 0 0 The zip250 is on a completely different interface, however, the PCMCIA. Any help would be appreciated. BTW, I'm using kde in mva2006. Thanks.
  10. You're quite right :D Many thanks again.
  11. I'm afraid I can't find "Set Up Boot System" in my MCC (mva 2006), but the message is clear. Many thanks.
  12. Many thanks to you both, I KNEW that it was simple B) . I've discoved that /tmp has over 1GB in it, including, for example, 54e84e95.tmp/ 6a1c624a.tmp/ 7ddc03bb.tmp/ a901faf1.tmp/ plugtmp-1/ .. .. plugtmp-48/ Is it safe to delete the contents of this directory, or some parts of it? Thanks
  13. Could someone tell me how to get a list of the directories (if that's the correct linux-term  ) on a partition, including the size of each (directory)? I'm pretty sure that it's a simple command, but I'm d.. ..d if I can find it . Thanks.
  14. dosfsck told me that 'Cluster size is zero'; somewhat strange  . Anyway, mkdosfs created a filesystem, as expected; GREAT linux software.. Many thanks.
  15. Well, Control Centre tells me that dosfstools-2.10-2mdk is installed but I cannot run it, neither as user nor as root. I also cannot find it on the partition using Konqueror (in case a path is necessary). Could you help me out again? Thanks.
  16. I'd just like to add something which is rather curious here. I have two zip-250 disks, which were origionally formatted for Mac and have now been formatted for PC (by Windoze). Windoze reads from and writes to these correctly but mandy refuses to mount either  . Using another zip-250 disk (origionally formatted for PC) everything works correctly under mandy (and Windoze). It would appear that there is some (physical??) formatting on the disks that windoze ignores but mandy doesn't. Has anyone any tips on how to overcome this problem? Thanks
  17. Nope, just standard mandy stuff, straight from the DVD.
  18. Occasionally icons just seem to disappear from the taskbar of mva2006, haven't a clue why  . Usually I just end the session, relog-in and all is well again. Is there any other way of refreshing the taskbar? Thanks. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  19. Well, the problem is solved. I bought a PCMCIA-cable for the drive, uncoupled the parallel-interfaced ZIP-100 drive (mandy gets confused if BOTH are connected), plugged in the ZIP-250, rebooted and... ... it worked. No mods to fstat or anything else. Magnificent . That's computing for you!! Many thanks for all your help :) .
  20. I use Konqueror as a browser in my mva2006-box, and have found that, when reading my e-mails in Yahoo-mail, the Reply and Forward buttons refuse to react to the usual click. When the cursor is over either butten it correctly changes to a hand, but that's all. Since these buttons work correctly in Firefox I assume that there's some settings-problem with Konqueror; I've checked in Settings/Configure but can't find anything that looks applicable. Has anyone else had a similar problem and managed to solve it? Thanks
  21. Whoops, have been wasting everyone's time Many apologies!!! The other interface is NOT parallel, it's PCMCIA. Has anyone any experience with this on a Zip-drive (for example, what type of drive does mva recognise it as, etc)? Thanks
  22. I've been given a Zip250 drive (model Z250USBPCM), which I'd like to attach to my Mva2006 box. There is a USB and a parallel connector on the drive. When I connected it via the USB, 2006 tried to configure it but failed; I've since read that "Iomega does not support using USB drives in Linux". Has anyone out there any experience with this drive, and, in particular, does it ONLY work via the parallel-interface? Thanks.
  23. Thanks, Yves :) . I've since found another product called PlanMaker 2006 (from SoftMaker), which claims to be Excel-compatible. Do you know anything about it? Thanks
  24. I think I read somewhere that Gnumeric was compatible with Excel, however I can't find any reference in the gnumeric manual to macros. Does Gnumeric support them (VBA??) or do I have to use a different spreadsheet? My Gnumeric is ver 1.4.3. Thanks.
  25. Thanks, Nexus, but I have no 'export' item in the menu-system, only File/Open/Load Playlist/Save Playlist and Options/Auto next/Show tooltip/Clear all. And, Lex, thanks for your CL-tip, it works well. Could you also tell me how to access the options that you refer to? Cheers Edit: Sorry to have possibly wasted your time; have found the timidity-manual. Many thanks, once again. :D
