  1. Has anyone had any experience of running mandriva on a Compaq NC 6000? I ask this because I've had quite a few problems with my Tosh Sat Pro 4600 (sound system unreliable, LAN only works on restart, etc, etc  ) and, if I buy another laptop, I'd like it to be a bit more consistent. Thanks.

  2. I've avoided wifi until now because I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere of security problems with it; it's now probably time to bite the bullet, however  . I've read the wifi-wiki, but would like to get hold of some more up-to-date info on security aspects before jumping in the deep end. Could anyone point me to a suitable source, please? Thanks.

  3. Thanks, neddie, I did as suggested:

    [root@localhost ~]# urpmi TiMidity++
To satisfy dependencies, the following 3 packages are going to be installed (33 MB):
    TiMidity++-2.13.2-10mdk.i586
    libportaudio0-18.1-4mdk.i586
    timidity-patch-freepats-20040611-1mdk.noarch
    Is this OK? (Y/n) y

and TiMidity++ now works. Strange, though, that MCC wouldn't do it, don't you think? No change to mirrors etc was required. Anyway, once again, many thanks.

  4. Thanks, Ian, pcmcia-cs has been installed and both pcmcia cards can now be mounted  . Unfortunately, now there's another small problem:

    I've changed the zip-line in /etc/fstab from

    /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip auto pamconsole,exec,noauto,managed 0 0

    to

    [/dev/sda4 /mnt/zip100 vfat umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0

because, when I unmount the zip drive and remove the card, the system totally freezes and I have to reboot. This fstab-change was just an attempt to solve that problem. The effect of the change is that it is no longer possible to unmount the zip-drive from KDiskFree, but is possible at cli. So, I wrote two script, umzip (to unmount zip) and mzip. These look like this:

    umzip:

    #!/bin/bash
    su -c "umount /mnt/zip100"

    and mzip

    #!/bin/bash
    su -c "mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip100"

Running umzip correctly unmounts the zip-drive but running mzip results in the message

mzip: drive '::' is not a Zip or Jaz drive

However - and this is the strange bit - if I do the command

    [root@localhost ~]# mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip100

    this works.

I don't understand it. It appears to be a syntax problem but I can't identify it.

As I've said, it's possible to mount from a root-konsole, so the problem's not particularly important but I'd just like to know WTH I'm doing wrong  . Can you help me out? Thanks.

  6. I adjusted the settings as you suggested, but quality deteriorated so I reset them. At the moment audio is fine, anyway, only about 50% of the boots does it end up crackling and snapping. Seems to be just luck if it works correctly  Thanks, anyway.

  7. Preview refused to do just that so I assumed that it was too big to send; thus the split.

Sorry about the verbosity, wasn't sure which part of the bottom section was relevant.

There is a single FAT32 partition on the hard disk. BTW, the disk works correctly when connected to the machine via the Toshiba Portable Harddisk PC card

This is just the first section, second follows...

  9. Following "pccardctl insert 2" the relevant part of dmesg was

pccard: PCMCIA card inserted into slot 2
    pcmcia: registering new device pcmcia2.0
    Probing IDE interface ide2...
hde: probing with STATUS(0x50) instead of ALTSTATUS(0x0a)

    ide2 at 0xd1f0-0xd1f7,0xd3f6 on irq 3
    hde: max request size: 128KiB

and following "pccardctl resume 2" there was no additional output.

  10. Thanks, Willie  , I've looked there but can't see anything which I recognise.

And Greg, I tried the following:

I removed the working card (Tosh) and inserted the non-working one (JMK), then did

    [root@localhost ~]# pccardctl ident
    Socket 0:
product info: "TOSHIBA", "Wireless LAN Card", "Version 01.01", ""
     manfid: 0x0156, 0x0002
     function: 6 (network)
    Socket 1:
     no product info available
    Socket 2:
     product info: "ARC", "ATA", "V2", "(C) ARCHOS S.A.1995-98 Fax +33 1 60 13 99 18"
     manfid: 0x5241, 0x0043
     function: 4 (fixed disk)
    [root@localhost ~]# pccardctl suspend 2
    [root@localhost ~]# pccardctl eject 2

At this point I did not remove the card, but did

    [root@localhost ~]# pccardctl ident
    Socket 0:
     ......
    Socket 1:
     ......
    Socket 2:
     no product info available

    Then (card still in)

    [root@localhost ~]# pccardctl insert 2
    [root@localhost ~]# pccardctl resume 2
    [root@localhost ~]# pccardctl ident
    Socket 0:
     .....
    Socket 1:
     .....
    Socket 2:
     product info: "ARC", "ATA", "V2", "(C) ARCHOS S.A.1995-98 Fax +33 1 60 13 99 18"
     manfid: 0x5241, 0x0043
     function: 4 (fixed disk)

Despite the card having been recognised, I was not able to mount it and KDiskFree doesn't have it in its list.

    I then did

    [root@localhost ~]# pccardctl suspend 2
    [root@localhost ~]# pccardctl eject 2

Note: here I physically removed the card and reinserted it, then did

    [root@localhost ~]# pccardctl ident
    Socket 0:
     .....
    Socket 1:
     .....
    Socket 2:
     product info: "ARC", "ATA", "V2", "(C) ARCHOS S.A.1995-98 Fax +33 1 60 13 99 18"
     manfid: 0x5241, 0x0043
     function: 4 (fixed disk)

So it looks (to me, anyway ;) ) as though your command-suggestions are working as expected and the system is capable of identifying the card (via hotplug?) but then doesn't know what to with it/which driver to load. Does that sound reasonable?

  11. I wouldn't mind getting to the bottom of this pcmcia problem. I've tried to read up a bit on udev but still a number of questions ;) .

Before I proceed, could anyone tell me if it would it be correct to say that udev only allows a system to use consistent device names , but doesn't do the actual device-detection and/or driver-loading and/or device-mounting? And, if so, which process(es) is/are responsible for these actions, and where does the device-info come from? Thanks.

  12. Thanks for the tip. When you say "volume control", do you mean KMix? I can't find any reference to digital output in my Kmix.

I've also looked in MCC -> Hardware -> Soundcard, where I thought that a change of driver might have some effect (currently installed is: ‎snd_intel8x0, alternatives are: ‎ali5455, i810_audio, nvaudio) but I can't find any way of performing such a change, neither im MCC nor in KDE Control Centre. Interesting.

  13. Well, nexus, you've hit the nail right on the head and my apologies to everyone for not thinking of it myself :woops: . It occurred to me this morning that I'd plugged the drive directly into my friend's machine, so I tried that, which worked, of course. . And thanks for the tip about the higher power requirements of external disks, pmpatrick.

Once again, my apologies to everyone, and many thanks for all of your help.

  14. I have just received a USB external drive which my mdv2008 box does not recognise. Initially I thought that it was a 2008 problem, but Win 2000 doesn't recognise it either. I then tried it on a friend's XP-box, with no problems. USB works perfectly with the printer and memory-stick, BTW, so I don't think that it's a hardware problem.

The USB-box's read-me says something like... "if it's still not working you may need to set up your BIOS". I've been into BIOS and the only thing that I can find remotely relating to USB says "Enable USB Legacy Emulation" (currently disabled). Doesn't sound the right thing to me, but has anyone else any ideas? My machine is a Tosh Sat Pro 4600. Thanks.

    [moved from Software by spinynorman]

  15. Thanks, Greg (just knew that it was something like that ;) ). I got the following:

    [root@localhost ~]# pccardctl ident
    Socket 1:
     product info: "ARC", "ATA", "V2", "(C) ARCHOS S.A.1995-98 Fax +33 1 60 13 99 18"
     manfid: 0x5241, 0x0043
     function: 4 (fixed disk)

I assume that this info has to be transposed into an entry for some config-file or another. In 2005le this was called '/etc/pcmcia/config ' but it doesn't exist in 2008 (or 2006). Any further tips (filename and/or how to transpose) would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

  16. were you trying to run it as root or regular user? if regular user, chances are you need to be root to use that command.

Yes, I was running it as root. I seem to remember reading somewhere that pcmcia has changed on 2008, but don't know the details.
