  1. Tried with ping www.mandrivausers.org, which resulted in: PING mandrivausers.org (83.245.15.165) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from kwh.kernow-gb.com (83.245.15.165): icmp_seq=1 ttl=53 time=27.1 ms .. .. 64 bytes from kwh.kernow-gb.com (83.245.15.165): icmp_seq=36 ttl=53 time=30.4 ms When I terminated it with Ctrl-C the answer was: --- mandrivausers.org ping statistics --- 36 packets transmitted, 36 received, 0% packet loss, time 35032ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 26.523/28.013/31.762/1.157 ms Presumeably this is positive
  2. Thanks for the valuable tip. Yes, it worked and am now back on line with Firefox. Don't want to appear too optimistic, but I think I'm beginning to understand this Urpmi thing Until the next prob, that is.

  4. When I attemped to upgrade from Software-Updates in MCC I was given the message: I can't find any suitable mirror. ....architecture of your processor is not supported... I can hardly believe that; this machine is a bog-standard PC, and I've had no problems in the past. Any pointers to what the trouble could be? It then said that I could choose a mirror manually via the Software Media Manager, and add a "Security updates medium". No idea what that means :(. Nevertheless, tried with http://www.mandrivaclub.nl/sources/official/2006/i586/ (provided by devries in my 'KOffice not in Mdk2006 distro' topic) thinking that might do, but that was rejected by Software-Updates as well. Isn't looking very good.
  5. Thanks. Didn't understand the pages of info, but something IS clearly there.
  6. Not on my system, unfortunately; result is 'bash: service: command not found'. No worry, though. Thanks anyway.
  7. Have just installed shorewall on this hdd as you suggested - via the gui. Just one point, though; MCC does not say whether or not shorewall has been successfully installed, although I assume that all is OK. Is there any way of checking this on-line other than selecting verbose at boot-time?
  8. Thanks, have now set up shorewall. AND have managed to reliably connect/disconnect broadband via the network-icon. But perhaps I spoke too soon about it working first time, because that isn't always the case; quite frequently the system boots without starting eth1 and then no number of attempts to connect via the icon works. On checking in MCC/System-services I've noticed that netplugd is not set to 'on boot'; is this significant? Also, I did not provide any of the Hostname/DNS server/Gateway information when setting up the connection, essentially because I don't know it and, since the connection works anyway, I thought it was optional. Probably not.
  9. Thanks to all who contributed here; I set up a new internet connection in MCC and IT WORKED FIRST TIME.. Wonderful Mandriva!! :P However, I am a little uneasy about the fact that the internet-connection starts at boot and remains on for the session's duration. With dialup I at least had the option of killing the internet-connection when I was finished with it. Perhaps I'm being paranoid, but what's to stop some hacker getting into my system whilst I am working on some non-internet stuff - i.e. in the background - and (hush) causing trouble?? Since I sometimes spend hours on the system, that's a lot of total session-time. Perhaps someone could calm my nerves. BTW, I HAVE managed to disconnect the connection, but have not been able to subsequently re-establish it without rebooting.
  10. Have just installed LE 2005 onto another machine , tried to install Sessionsaver to firefox and was told that an update - to firefox- was necessary. Did as suggested and downloaded 'firefox-1.0.7.installer.tar.gz' from the mozilla site, then unpacked the file and then .... have no idea how to continue. There is an executable called firefox.installer, but don't know how to use it. Any tips, anyone??
  11. The KOffice package has not been included in the mdk 2006 distro. I went to The KOffice Project site and found KOffice 1.4.2, but the only downloads there are for mdk 10.2 and some other called 'srpms', whatever that means. Presumeably the 10.2 dowmload would not work with 2006. If this is so, does anyone know where a suitable source for 2006 is?
  12. Thanks to all for your replies. Now, a minor panic  Have just contacted ntl about their broadband installation, only to be informed that Linux is not supported. Can this possibly be true. If so, will have to find another supplier. Grrrrr.
  13. Thanks for the clarification. Have found the following on ebay: Linksys BEFSR41 Cable / DSL Router. Is this likely to be linux-compatible?
  14. Thanks. Just one more question; given my limited knowledge of broadband, I am assuming that a broadband router is connected between the incoming cable and the switch / hub, which then goes to both computers. Could you correct this if I'm wrong?
  15. Thanks Yves and Steve. Just thought of another problem. I would need to connect two computers, both probably running LE2005, to the broadband input. Have read about an ethernet network switch (specifically, a Net-Lynx 5-Port Mini Ethernet Switch) being able to provide this sort of connection, but don't know if such a device is linux-compatible. Are all of these things OS-independent, and, if not, which ones are linux-compatible?
  16. I've still not solved my dial-up problem in LE2005 (see "kppp jammed, modem permanently engaged"), but the thought HAS occurred to me that a reasonable solution might be to buy a device that definitely does work with that OS. So... how about some feedback (preferably just from LE2005 users, mind you) on which modems YOU are using. Should be interesting to see the variety of linux-compatible devices around.
  17. I've temporarily abandoned the 536EP route and have tried attaching an old (?) external USRobotics Sportster Flash to COM0; LE2005 recognised it immediately. Using MCC I deleted all existing network interfaces and set up a new one using the Sportster and it worked - partially. After connecting to the provider it tries to start pppd and fails; the following appears in the log-window and subsequently in the debug-log: Log-window contents are: ATZ OK ATM1L1 OK ATDT08005190100 CONNECT 33600/ARQ Starting pppd... Timeout expired while waiting for the PPP interface to come up. Debug-log contents are: Oct 28 19:30:30 localhost pppd[9028]: pppd 2.4.3 started by margit, uid 500 Oct 28 19:30:30 localhost pppd[9028]: using channel 4 Oct 28 19:30:30 localhost pppd[9028]: Using interface ppp0 Oct 28 19:30:30 localhost pppd[9028]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS0 Oct 28 19:30:30 localhost pppd[9028]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0x821c7cb8> <pcomp> <accomp>] Oct 28 19:31:00 localhost pppd[9028]: Terminating on signal 15. Oct 28 19:31:06 localhost pppd[9028]: Exit. Any hints??
  18. Thanks, but don't exactly know how to recognise a lock file  . The nearest that I can find is under /var/lock/subsys; there is a whole bunch of files, mostly 0 byte long, but nothing - as far as I can see - relating to kppp. Neither of the other directories has anything relating to lock.
  19. I made the mistake of upgrading a totally functional mkd10.1 to LE 2005 and now kppp persists in telling me that the modem is engaged. The latter works as expected under Win 2k Pro, and as I said, it also worked under 10.1, so I can't believe that there's a hardware problem. I assume that kppp has some kind of software record of the modem's state, and that this is the source of the problem. An INSTALLATION of LE 2005 hasn't helped, so now I'm a bit lumbered . A helpful pointer would be much appreciated.
  20. I was under the impression that Linux (LE 2005) could write to a Windows partition in the approp. form (in my case Win 2k Pro using FAT32). However, when I try it, the write works - at least the file appears in the Windows partition in Konqueror, and Explorer sees it following Windows boot - but the file cannot be read. I simply dragged and dropped (copied) the file into the Windows partition; perhaps this is the wrong method. Any tips? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  21. Did just as you said and it worked :P (with freecell, anyway). Will try winetools tomorrow. Many thanks. ************** This is 'tomorrow'. Downloaded package winetools-212jo.tar.gz from site 'winetools and unpacked using unzip (not sure if this was correct). Ran ./install while at /usr/local/winetools/scripts and got a load of error-messages; neither 'msgfmt' nor 'envsubst' can be found on my system Any further tips would be greatly appreciated. ***************** Have another small (??) problem now with wine. I downloaded gettext (which apparently gave me envsubst and msgfmt), and ran winetools. This time I was able to start the setup procedure, but was informed that my version of wine had not been recognised. I nevertheless ran 'wine freecell.exe' again but, instead of running correctly (as it had done prior to installing winetools), I was given the following error-messages: Warning: the specified Windows directory L"c:\\windows" is not accessible. Warning: the specified System directory L"c:\\windows\\system" is not accessible. err:module:import_dll Library ole32.dll (which is needed by L"c:\\windows\\system\\shlwapi.dll") not found err:module:import_dll Library shlwapi.dll (which is needed by L"c:\\windows\\system\\shell32.dll") not found err:module:import_dll Library SHELL32.dll (which is needed by L"H:\\WindozExecs\\freecell.exe") not found err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"H:\\WindozExecs\\freecell.exe" failed, status c0000135 OK, I thought, just uninstall winetools, but this failed because MCC cannot find the package installed. I have re-installed wine, in the hope that any mods set by winetools would have been overwritten, but the same error-messages occur. How on earth do I overcome this problem? Ideally, I would just like to work WITHOUT winetools, which seems to me to be too intrusive.
  22. Many thanks for your help. I had previously copied an app from Windows (freecell.exe) into the folder WindozExecs for testing purposes (possibly a mistake to simply copy it??). When I tries to run it as you suggested, I got the following message: [lawrence@localhost WindozExecs]$ wine freecell.exe wine client error:9: version mismatch 178/157. Your wine binary was not upgraded correctly, or you have an older one somewhere in your PATH. Or maybe the wrong wineserver is still running? On checking with the MCC (Software Packages Removals) I discovered that the following wine-packages are on the system. libwine1-20050211-2mdk libwine1-devel-20050211-2mdk wine-20050614-1.mdk10.2.thac winelib-0.3-1mdk There appears to be an incompatability amongst them. Any tips on sorting them out?
  23. Hello John I am still having unexplainable problems with the installation of wine. Would it be possible for you to put me into contact with a member of MUB who has experience with it? Many thanks Lawrence
  24. I am on PAYG dial-up, so I would like to avoid keep having to download files in the hope that they work. As stated above, I have already downloaded 2 files ('wine-20050614-1.mdk10.2.thac.i586.rpm' and 'winelib-0.3-1mdk.src.rpm') which are sitting on the hdd. Is it not possible, using the 'urpmi.addmedia' command, to point urpmi to these files and then simply let the latter rip?
  25. Definitely cannot find a menu for wine and keep getting a message from winetools, saying that wine is already installed; quite confusing. Perhaps I need a different emulator  By the way, the app that I need to run is the uploader from ebay; can't remember its name. Perhaps there is a linux equivalent (probably asking too much).
