  1. disableIPV6 was, in fact, set to FALSE; I set it to TRUE, rebooted and all seems to be correct.. Thanks:) Haven't changed Sessionsaver, in fact I haven't a clue how to disable it.
  2. It looks as though I may have spoken too soon about solving the eth0/broadband/router problem (see Ethernet, Xircom CreditCard Ethernet), because a very strange thing is now occurring. At boot the eth0 connection is made and I start Firefox (with Sessionsaver installed); instead of finding the sites from the previous session it just grinds away with the "Loading..." message in all of the tabs and never DOES load anything. It seems to know what it wants to load but can't find the sites. I then have to reboot; generally it then works. I suppose that it could also be a Firefox bug - I seem to remember this also happening occasionally with dialup - has anyone else had a similar problem?
  3. Just an attempt to resurrect this topic, since I still need occasionally to export stuff to Windoz, however looked-down-on that may be :o
  4. Thanks, it worked. Just have to learn how to drive it now.
  5. I am just starting to use Python and would like to do that with an IDE. I've found one called eric3 in SourceForge.net (eric-3.8.0.tar.gz) but am reluctant to download it in case it is incompatible with LE2005 - at least I couldn't find any info on the site to guide me  Any assistance would be appreciated.
  6. Yup, you're right. I can now switch it on and off without the password. Thanks :P
  7. Well ...... I think you've done it I followed your instructions and then rebooted the system ten times; the network came up every time. The tower has not failed once, either. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed, but my confidence is high. Many thanks!! The following is not really important, but a solution would be helpful: on turning the network-connection on or off via the task-bar icon, it is necessary to enter the root-password. Is it possible to give the necessary permission to a SPECIFIC user and thereby avoid this necessity?
  8. Will try your suggestion. I assume that an IP address would be, e.g. 194.168.4.100 (what would be the advantage/disadvantage in using the other one?), but what about the Subnet mask? Would the default value of 255.255.255.0 be suitable, and what is the mask's function, anyway? By the way, does anyone have any experience with a Linksys EtherFast PCMPC200 v2 pcmcia card (under LE2005 preferably); this one IS in /etc/pcmcia/config and may be easier to configure, being a single-interface card..
  9. Just a couple of other points. Your comment about a problem with two cards if they both have the same IP Address led me to look at the card's parameters, and they do look suspiciously similar. Here they are: These data are from MCC-> Network & Internet-> Reconfigure a network (Manage Connections) [[ eth0: Intel Corp EtherExpress PRO/100]] -->>> Tab TCP/IP: Protocol: DHCP IP address: No IP (grey) Netmask: No Mask (grey) Gateway: blank DNS Servers: 194.168.4.100 and 194.168.8.100 Search Domain: nott.cable.ntl.com -->>> Tab DHCP: DHCP client: dhclient Assign host...DHCP address (selected) DHCP Host Name: blank DHCP timeout: blank Get DNS...DHCP: (selected) Get YP...DHCP (unselected) Get NTPD...DHCP (unselected) -->>> Tab Options: Start at boot (selected) Track network card id (selected) Network Hotplugging (selected) -->>> Tab Information: Vendor: Intel Corp Description: EtherExpress PRO/100 Media class: NETWORK_ETHERNET Module name: eepro100 Mac Address: 00:00:39:4a:74:8d Bus: PCI Location on the bus: 2 ************ [[eth2: Xircom CEM56 Ethernet/Modem]] -->>> Tab TCP/IP: Protocol: DHCP IP address: No IP (grey) Netmask: No Mask (grey) Gateway: blank DNS Servers: 194.168.4.100 and 194.168.8.100 Search Domain: nott.cable.ntl.com -->>> Tab DHCP: DHCP client: dhclient Assign host...DHCP address (selected) DHCP Host Name: blank DHCP timeout: blank Get DNS...DHCP: (selected) Get YP...DHCP (unselected) -->>> Tab Options: Start at boot (selected) Track network card id (selected) Network Hotplugging (selected) -->>> Tab Information: Vendor: Xircom CEM56 Ethernet/Modem Description: Xircom CEM56 Ethernet/Modem Media class: (blank) Module name: xirc2ps_cs Mac Address: 00:10:a4:04:a0:25 Bus: (blank) Location on the bus: (blank) As you can see, the DNS Server and Search Domain parameters are identical; could this be causing some conflict or another? Another curious thing is that MCC allows me to remove eth1 (wireless) and eth2 (Xircom CEM56) connections (and they are subsequently not started at boot) but refuses to allow eth0 to be removed. Strange?
  10. eth2 was set to use DHCP. I've now temporarily removed it to concentrate on the unreliability of eth0, but will return to it later.
  11. Sorry, I should have looked more carefully. The Xircom CEM56 DOES have an entry in /etc/pcmcia/config, under "Multifunction cards" and, of course, HardDrake HAD loaded the approp. module. Nevertheless, thanks for the tip on the Run Config Tool button; there was one, I ran Config and, at the next boot, eth2 was brought up [OK]. Unfortunately eth2 didn't provide internet access, but when I removed the cable from the CEM56 and inserted it into eth0, the latter came up. Perhaps there's a conflict if both eth0 and eth2 are up?
  12. I have a pcmcia card for which there is no entry in /etc/pcmcia/config. "cardctl ident" provides the following info: product info: "Xircom", "CreditCard Ethernet 10/100 + Modem 56", "CEM56", "1.00" manfid: 0x0105, 0x110a function: 2 (serial) Can anyone help with the appropriate entry? I've tried the follwing, with no success: card "Xircom CreditCard Ethernet 10/100 + Modem 56" version "Xircom", "CreditCard Ethernet 10/100 + Modem 56", "CEM56", "1.00" manfid: 0x0105, 0x110a bind "xirc2ps_cs" Perhaps I should have used 'bind "serial_cs"' but I thought that applied only to the modem part.
  13. Yes, I've exchanged cables without effect, including between machines, and the tower always comes up but not always the laptop. The tower only has eth0 (an SiS900 10/100 Ethernet), the laptop eth0 and eth1. eth0 is an "Intel EtherExpress PRO/100", and eth1 is an "Intersil PRISM2 11 Mbps Wireless Adapter". AFAIK I can't just swap interfaces but please correct me if I'm wrong. BTW, at boot the system generally spends at least a minute trying to bring eth1 up, before failing; is this significant and, if not, is it possible to inhibit this process, since I don't think (relating to your question) that I need eth1?
  14. I tried your suggestion. Disconnected the cable from the laptop (with a previously CONNECTED - but currently DOWN - network!!), rebooted and then reconnected the cable; the network came UP. Tried the same, this time with the network UP before disconnection the cable. Following reboot and reconnection the network came UP again. All this without the router. In the meantime I've received and installed a LinkSys router - with two computers attached to it - and the situation seems to have improved somewhat, although LE2005 still occasionally fails to bring the network up on the laptop but is OK on the tower. It's early days still and I don't want to get too confident just yet.
  15. netplugd was, indeed, disabled to start at boot, so I enabled it but there was no significant improvement. One disadvantage to enabling netplugd, however, is that it is not possible to disconnect the network via the task-bar icon; the system, i.e. netplugd, turns it back on immediately. netplugd is now disabled!! Will have to see how a different modem/router combination works
  16. You could be right about the speed of response, since it does seen irratic. However, AFAIK the connection does not require authentification, so probably the setup you describe would be of little help to me. By the way, is the Dlink switch that you mentioned a router?
  17. Thanks, Ixthusdan; have ordered a pcmcia card, will see how that performs. Do you (or anyone else) know which process/script is responsible for bringing up the ethernet card? I might be able to modify the script to cater for my machine's hardware.
  18. By "unreliable" I mean that the system does not always establish a connection at boot; once it HAS established the connection all works well and it remains so during use. This morning was a typical example: I switch the machine on, it boots but the network (indicated by the network-icon in the task-bar) is down on eth0. Without doing anything else I select Logout / Restart Computer, it reboots and this time the network is up. Very strange :( At boot, the result of "Bringing up interface eth0" is always [OK], but that doesn't mean that it will actually work, i.e. provide access to the net.
  19. I am now on ntl-broadband. However, the connection is not particularly reliable; mostly it works, but occasionally (TOO occasionaly) it fails i.e. on boot the system fails to recognise the connection and then even ianw1974's solution of "ifdown/ifup" (see topic 'Ethernet, Changing to broadband') doesn't work. Given that the broadband-modem AND the laptop hardware work correctly - can't nevertheless guarantee either- it is probable that the boot-software does not. Does anyone know if there is an update to LE2005 or 2006 that could solve this problem; there are loads of update packages available, but I don't know which ones could apply. I am using an Intel EtherExpress PRO/100, in a Tosh Sat Pro 4600 under LE2005 and Mandriva 2006.
  20. Thanks. Used East-Urpmi to download koffice, hope it all works as expected.
  21. Thanks. I tried this as suggested - within a terminal with su and then both commands, which worked on the connection that I had previously disabled - but, when I tried to do the same in a script, it failed. This is a matter of principle, because I'm sure that I'll want to do something else like this again, so could you tell me where I'm going wrong? My script first looked like this: #!/bin/bash su -c "ifdown eth1" su -c "ifup eth1" resulting in: [lawrence@cpc4-clif1-6-0-cust18 ~]$ sbb Password: bash: ifdown: command not found Password: bash: ifup: command not found My second attempt looks like this #!/bin/bash su - ifdown eth1 ifup eth1 resuting in: [lawrence@cpc4-clif1-6-0-cust18 ~]$ sbb Password: [root@cpc4-clif1-6-0-cust18 ~]#exit /home/lawrence/bin/sbb: line 3: ifdown: command not found /home/lawrence/bin/sbb: line 4: ifup: command not found Where's the fatal - but probably simple - error?
  22. Connecting to the internet is still somewhat unreliable, mostly it works but occasionally doesn't. It's no big problem, I just have to reboot and away it goes, but a bit annoying. What was the configuration problem that you had, perhaps the solution will help me?
  23. With regard to my paranoia about hackers, if I'm not using the web I cut the connection via the network-icon, which needs root permission. Is there any way of avoiding this, i.e. giving permission to a specific user, perhaps in a similar way to enabling the pcmciahdd at boot via /etc/fstab?
  24. Currently both broadband modem and Firefox are working well - that's LE2005 with shorewall - so I'll keep these tips in mind for when the router is installed. Thanks.
