  1. Thanks, will look into it.. Greetz
  2. Hi guys.. I downloaded XFCE version and must say I was impressed by the look, feel and how fast it goes on my machine. I've lately used debian most of the time (good distro by the way) but have now decided to use this one as my multimedia player. My second computer is connected to my stereo and that one is connected to a rather old soundworks 4.0. I tried to get multimedia codecs and that stuff but couldn't find them in the repositories. I need the following: FLAC Vorbis-tools lame liblame0 faac win32codecs and maybe gstreamerplugins0.10 monkeys-audio (yes got that working in debian) Reason for these req is that i have lots of CD's and DVD's with flac and ape files I want to convert to mp3 due to HD space limitations. And no I don't want to use Amarok scripts.. Give me a hint or some tips to make this work and I will be a Mandriva user again.. Looking forward to your answers and tips.. Greetz from sweden.. 3. I switched back to old monotor.. Thanks for your reply :D
  4. Hi I have installed Mandriva 2006. Works well. Except for Enemy Territory. For a couple of weeks ago i bought a second hand 19 inch monitor, wich mandriva found as plug and play and the rez is default to 1280x1024 on the desktop, thats all well. But when trying to run ET i cant play in other rez than 1280x1024 and my videocard (geoforce2 MX 400) lags a lot. when trying to run ET in 800x600 or 1024x768 i get a windowed mode, its not playable that way. Any clues to a solution? Thanks in advance..
  5. Well as I suspected , I posted in wrong topic. Sorry admin. I learn day by day.. Greetz again..
  6. Hi all.. I'm a 50 years old (young) computer freak from sweden. I''ve been using computers since the world began (joke). Well since abouth the end of the 80's. I began my computer experiences with an Atari ST 1024 (remember them?). My first PC was a wonder. An AST box with 8 MB RAM and 586 processor running at stunning 90mhz. Wow! After that i made a stunning upgrade to an AMD K5 (6?) 266mhz. I've been installing Linux several times under the years, mostly Red Hat, as they sometimes where on coverdisks of computer magazines i've been bying. I didn't have an internet broadband then, and got it rather lately. For abouth six months ago i decided, for reasons that actually still are rather unclear for me, to give Linux a seroius try. I've tried several distributions; Mepis, PCLinuxOS, Ubuntu and of course Mandriva. Ubuntu (Hoary) worked very well and i was suprised and glad over the easyness to install both the OS and apt-get applications. Though i learned that it took lots of memory to run well. Mandriva 2005 LE was my next succesfull installation. I've learned easy-urpmi and as with Ubuntu i discovered the willingness of these communities to help. Actually i only have been forced to ask questions very seldom, i search in this community 99% of the time gives an answer to my problem. Now I've been running Mandriva 10.1 for a while and i'm very pleased with it. A funny point is that when i upgraded my hardware i actually had to switch to 10.1 to make my machine to work smoothly. But i dont care as long as it works well. To be real honest i'm not a 100% migrater. I have a second machine running Windows XP and i use it as an muscibox for all my mp3's. It's connected to my stereo and with 2 big speakers and 2 behind my back and a subwoofer i have the towns best music-play-enviroment. But my main machine is running Mandriva 10.1. I use Mozilla as my web browser in 10.1 i run 1.7.8. works fine. Mozilla Messenger for email. Lopster and BitTorrent for music sharing and downloading. XMMS for playing mp3. Mplayer and Kaffeine for Videos. Enemy-Territory, Quake III and Quake II, Castle Wolfenstein for my gaming needs. I also been able to install Acrobat Reader, Flash, Java, Real Player with webbrowser plugins. Yeah.. I'm really satisfied with Mandriva and Linux. If any other old windows user are plannning or doing a migration to Linux i will be happy to share my experiences. You can reach my by email hans796@gmail.com. Greetz from The Kingdom of Sweden. PS! I hope i posted i the right place DS! [moved from Software by spinynorman :)]

    K3B Config

Hi mates.. If I want to burn CD's witk K3B so that Windows XP reads them correctly, and by that I mean, the filenames is shown right. I noticed when I start the burn process I get some options to choose but haven't figured it out.. Any clues? And while I'm at it.. I have two machines. My 1st choice is running Linux (mandriva 2005 Le). It runs smooth and fine. On the other one I have Windows XP. The reason for that is that I use it as a jukebox, it's connected to my stereo, and with my soundblaster audigy it sure sounds good. I have lots of mp3's and haven't found a player app in Linux (yet?!) that match upp to Windows mediaplayer 10. What I found lacking in the apps i tried on the linux plattform seam to be volume leveling and database to index up all files. Maybe someone knows better than me and I really would like to migrate to 100%. A while a go I found an app (I've lost the bookmark) called "Jukebox" that sounded Ok but I never got it to work properly. Suggestions and comments are highly welcome.. With greetz from rainy but yet warmy sweden..
  8. :D Thanks guys.. I've decided to give Fluxbox a trie.. Found a RPM, installed it and yes it sure looks and feel nice..
  9. Hi I've tried different linux distros. Ubuntu and Mandriva are the ones that suite me. Now I'm running Mandriva LE 2005 and KDE. When I tried out Ubuntu I was quite pleased with the Openbox WM. Now I'm running KDE with Openbox as WM. But I've a cuople of issues that I want to solve and trie out; 1. How can I run Openbox without KDE? I just want to try it. To do that, I think it's suggested to load "kicker" and/or "kdesktop" applications, how? 2. In Ubuntu Openbox had a "Obconf" that enabled me to switch themes. I tried to get it with urpmi but no such package found. Any clues? Thanks in advance.. greetz from sweden.. By the way, hope this is the right subforum to ask this question..

    CD Database

Hi I'm relative new to the Linux world and I'm running my PC with Mandriva 2005 LE. I think it works very well and thanks to forums like this one migration from Windows hasen't been so difficult. Now to my question. I have abouth 300 cd's with mp3 that I have downloaded and ripped. Now I want to build a database of all those. Any suggestions? Is there any simple database app around? I understood that most (all?) distros come with SQL. I'm not used to that, but anyway, can I build my own database? Thanks in advance Not so very noobish greetz from rainy Sweden..
  12. I run mandrake LE 2005 with swedish language. I haven't got the "theme manager". Due to the swedish language? I dunno.. Is there any way to start it from the console? Greetz
  13. Hi :D I'm running mandriva 2005. KDE. In the install face I made a seperate partition /mp3 where I want to put my music. I noticed that I can't access it as regular user, how can I solve that? I checked out fstab and could not see any difference between /home (it lies on a seperate partion to and /mp3). Noob greetz
  14. Hi fellow users :D I've tested different linux distros back and forth. A while ago I got tired of windows and decided to switch over. I now use Mandrake 10.1 and is very happy with it. It's often easy to get things done and if I dont understand something there is always help to find on the internet. I would like some newbie help with setting up a network between two pc's both running Mandrake 10.1. My 1st Pc is connected to the net with an ADSL Modem - it's working fine. In this one I have a second network card connected to PC 2 with a dual connection cable (is that the right word?) My 2nd PC is connected to the net trough "Internet connection sharing" - it's working fine. I also want to be able to share directories so that I can switch files between them. Here I got stuck. I need newbie help with this. Really newbie help.. A guide would be nice. With kind newbie linux regards from the kingdom of sweden Hans A
