mandrake_alf Posted November 19, 2003 Report Share Posted November 19, 2003 Maybe this is old stuff but I just can't keep looking anymore At one time I had a little HOWTO on adding desktop GUI's to KDM and/or changing between kdm/gdm etc, but it is long gone somehow. I'm running mdk 9.1 and installed a new desktop I found called Antiright but I can't put it in the kdm. The configuration menu option just adds a 'text entry' for it and if I choose it, kdm runs iceWM. If someone can with this I promise I'll print it out and have it tatooed to palm of my hand so I'll never EVER forget it again.. :P TIA Mike.. Qchem Posted November 19, 2003 Report Share Posted November 19, 2003 I can't remember exactly where the entry goes in Mandrake (I'm running Fedora on this box) but it'll be somewhere in /etc/X11. Try /etc/X11/dm/Sessions if and when you find the right directory there will be several files in there, including one with the name you created. Edit this file so it starts your window manager and rename it if necessary. Hope this helps, Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
ezroller Posted November 19, 2003 Report Share Posted November 19, 2003 there's a desktop utility in kde called session manager. you need root access to it, but you can easily add them there. But Qchem is right, just have a look in the folder /etc/X11/dm/sessions there are a bunch of entries there with .desktop extension. just take a look at those to get the syntax right, and make a new one as needed. pmpatrick Posted November 19, 2003 Report Share Posted November 19, 2003 I believe you add new one in kde control center>system>login manager>sessions. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
mandrake_alf Posted November 19, 2003 Author Report Share Posted November 19, 2003 there is NO /etc/X11/dm but there is /etc/X11/xdm, the contents of which are total 52 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 Sep 16 13:32 authdir -> ../../../var/lib/xdm/ -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 18360 Mar 12 2003 chooser* -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 509 Mar 3 2003 GiveConsole* -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 367 Mar 3 2003 TakeConsole* -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1976 Mar 3 2003 Xaccess -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 961 Mar 3 2003 xdm-config -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3181 Mar 3 2003 Xresources -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 625 Mar 3 2003 Xservers -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 68 Mar 3 2003 Xsession* -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 563 Mar 3 2003 Xsetup_0* The only *.desktop files in /ect/X11 are located in /starthere [root@kirk starthere]# lsl total 24 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3436 Mar 7 2003 applications.desktop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4022 Mar 7 2003 preferences.desktop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5219 Mar 7 2003 serverconfig.desktop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5334 Mar 7 2003 sysconfig.desktop [root@kirk starthere]# There are, what look to be startup scripts for them in /etc/X11/wmsession.d/ -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 117 Mar 13 2003 01KDE -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 129 Feb 25 2003 02GNOME -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 224 Jan 21 2003 03WindowMaker -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 133 Jun 22 2002 04Enlightenment -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 142 Aug 19 2002 06XFce -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 143 Jan 24 2003 07IceWM -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 134 Mar 14 2003 15AfterStep -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 159 Mar 2 2003 16fluxbox* [root@kirk wmsession.d]# I added a session for antiright using the config menu and it didn't show up in here so I did 'cp 01KDE 08Antiright' and edited it to start the new desktop. mandrake_alf Posted November 20, 2003 Author Report Share Posted November 20, 2003 All... After I restarted xserver (Ctl+Alt+Bksp) a couple of times, I was able to access tne new desktop. It must be xserver has to reinitialize itself and reread that directory in order to know what desktops are available. Thanks for your help.. Mike.. mandrake_alf Posted November 20, 2003 Author Report Share Posted November 20, 2003 Sorry EZROLLER, I didn't mean to ignore your post.... On my system, there is no /etc/X11/dm directory on my system (mdk 9.1). There is: /etc/X11/xdm/, /etc/X11/gdm/ but NO /etc/X11/dm/ OR /ect/X11/kdm/ .... Of course it doesn't really matter now since it seems to be working. I plan to try adding another Desktop to validate this procedure.
