kdm, howto add new session type

Maybe this is old stuff but I just can't keep looking anymore  At one time I had a little HOWTO on adding desktop GUI's to KDM and/or changing between kdm/gdm etc, but it is long gone somehow. I'm running mdk 9.1 and installed a new desktop I found called Antiright but I can't put it in the kdm. The configuration menu option just adds a 'text entry' for it and if I choose it, kdm runs iceWM. If someone can :help: with this I promise I'll print it out and have it tatooed to palm of my hand so I'll never EVER forget it again.. :P

TIA

Mike..

I can't remember exactly where the entry goes in Mandrake (I'm running Fedora on this box) but it'll be somewhere in /etc/X11.

Try /etc/X11/dm/Sessions

if and when you find the right directory there will be several files in there, including one with the name you created. Edit this file so it starts your window manager and rename it if necessary.

Hope this helps,

there's a desktop utility in kde called session manager. you need root access to it, but you can easily add them there.

But Qchem is right, just have a look in the folder

/etc/X11/dm/sessions

there are a bunch of entries there with .desktop extension.

just take a look at those to get the syntax right, and make a new one as needed.

there is NO /etc/X11/dm but there is /etc/X11/xdm, the contents of which are

total 52

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 Sep 16 13:32 authdir -> ../../../var/lib/xdm/

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 563 Mar 3 2003 Xsetup_0*

The only *.desktop files in /ect/X11 are located in /starthere

[root@kirk starthere]# lsl

total 24

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5334 Mar 7 2003 sysconfig.desktop

[root@kirk starthere]#

There are, what look to be startup scripts for them in /etc/X11/wmsession.d/

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 129 Feb 25 2003 02GNOME

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 159 Mar 2 2003 16fluxbox*

[root@kirk wmsession.d]#

I added a session for antiright using the config menu and it didn't show up in here so I did 'cp 01KDE 08Antiright' and edited it to start the new desktop. Logged out, logged in again only this time choosing the new item Antiright but kdm started iceWM (again) just like last time.

Any more ideas :wall:

Sorry EZROLLER, I didn't mean to ignore your post....

On my system, there is no /etc/X11/dm directory on my system (mdk 9.1).

There is:

/etc/X11/xdm/, /etc/X11/gdm/ but NO /etc/X11/dm/ OR /ect/X11/kdm/ ....

Of course it doesn't really matter now since it seems to be working. I plan to try adding another Desktop to validate this procedure.
