Gnubie
http://www.wired.com/news/infostructure/0,...tw=wn_tophead_2 This is basically a debian based distro that will be designed for desktop and home users. Like Debian it will be free (in all aspects). This is actually something I dreamed would come along for quite awhile. B)
DragonMage
And what is the difference between this and other debian based desktop distro out there (libranet, lindows, xandros)? In fact, it's not totally free either since it has to include some closed source stuffs such as drivers. I mean.. I think all we need for debian is an easy to use installation scheme (supposedly cured by the port of anaconda to debian) and the availability of packages in a non-broadband situation (update cds, etc). After that, debian should be a much more apetitizing distro for desktop.
jlc
Also, this was a snap to install. Debian-Installer beta 1 released http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-install...ler/News/2003/2 I used that and through it on my SMP 833 w/ scsi everything and it detected all the scsi devices and my nic. pretty basic installer, but it works. sarah31
well i dunno about anyone else but i did not find debian to install. just install a base system then go from there once you have your inet connection going. if you decide to do a larger install being able to read is an asset....like gentoo. DragonMage
If you are have used text based install like old slackware, debian is not that hard. It's the keeping the inet connection going part that is hard.. especially for a non-broadband user. Heck.. it's easy to cheat by installing knoppix to hd then update via apt-get, but the bandwidth and phone cost would be murder :)

Which makes it different than Lindows, libranet, xandros, etc. It will be different than debian in the sense that it will allow unfree software, but it will still be free in that it costs nothing. Or at least this is how I see it.
