emh
I would like to add some 9.2 mirrors to my urpmi database for 9.1. Will this work, or will it hopelessly hose my perfectly running system?
Ixthusdan
Maybe. B) Different versions of the os are compiled against different libraries. It is possible to have a program from the 9.2 distro to run without affecting you system. But, if the new progam is compiled against some new kde libs, for example, urpmi will want to uninstall all of your kde and install all of the new kde, which would include a lot of other stuff. So, when you try it, keep an eye on what urpmi wants to do. If it's too much, don't install that program.
emh
Would it be a big problem if I went ahead and let it install all the extra stuff, since it probably needs updating anyway?
aRTee
If it still runs, it apparently works... More luck than anything else maybe, I don't know. It depends largely on which programs you update...
Guest kuchwas
I would like to add some 9.2 mirrors to my urpmi database for 9.1. Will this work, or will it hopelessly hose my perfectly running system? That is precisely how I upgraded from 9.1 to 9.2 as soon as they froze Cooker! Suggest you do urpmi urpmi first. Then urpmi --auto-select --no-verify --no-deps --auto Then urpmi kernel Reboot and your there, with a great 9.2 box! Tim
Ixthusdan
Yes, you can upgrade to 9.2 as described. The issues at stake are: 1) the more programs you have installed that are not part of the release, the more likely you will encounter problems. 2) A "perfectly working" system might need (will need) tweaks in order to be perfectly working again. 3) An upgrade that encounters really odd problems can render your system useless; you need to really know how to move about your system under emergency boot conditions, or do the dreaded reinstall. 4) An install always works better than an upgrade. When I upgaded 9.2rc2 to 9.2 FiveStar, I had none of my xtras installed. It went smoothly. I have some issues, but I'll work them out eventually.
