installing j2sdk on redhat 9

Recommended Posts

$ ls /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.1_05/

bin        demo  jre  LICENSE  README    src.zip

COPYRIGHT  include  lib  man      README.html

Well, the next would be /jre

#ls /usr/jave/j2sdk1.4.1_05/jre/plugin/i386/????

I was trying to show you that what had changed from the directions you were following was just a version number (j2sdk1.4.1_05) so just compare the line in the directions for what you really have. More than likely the same path excpet a version number. Make sence.

:D

sorry, my mind is elsewhere... :oops:

I'm getting behind in my Database course - I am supposed to be learning Oracle 9i nd SQL (I have it on my win2k machine) so this java install has kind of moved to the back of my mind...

yep, I see now what you mean:

$ ls /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.1_05/jre/plugin/i386/ns610

libjavaplugin_oji.so

you were right, its different than what I thought.

Now just link that to your moz plugin dir. You should be good to go.

I installed 1.4.2 j2re from sun's .bin>.rpm last night on ML9.2rc2 and didn't have to do anything other than rpm -ivh. BUT, this has happened many times in the past as well in ML9.1/Mozilla-1.3x/j2re1.4.1. 'Usually', the only time I have to set ENV in .bashrc is for Opera. Back in ML9.0 and 8.1, I would, cheat if you will, by uninstalling mozilla and deps, AND java>install java AND mozilla and deps all at the same time (I used gnorpm to do it). This would set java up for the moz-family 'everytime'. Try it.

urpmi gnorpm

put all the rpm's in their own dir

gnorpm>install

[Just thinking of alternatives here :wink: ]

When I use MDK, I go one step further in cheating. I use urpmi and just

urpmi mozilla-java

I believe it's from texstar, and I believe that it does everything you need for Java to be in place for everyone else.

I could be wrong on that though, I'm not 100% sure. :shock:

thanks, I'll try that later when I get home.

Way back when I originally wanted to put java on my redhat box, I googled apt-get +java, but it seemed there was a licensing problem or something that prevented using apt-get for java. doh !!

I always try the easiest ways first... :lol:
