I'm using the Orinoco Silver wireless card on a 900 mhz Celeron Gateway Solo 1400 with the Mandrake 9.1 boxed edition. The Orinoco card is recognized on boot, however, the graphical environment does not start. I just get the linux command line. When I boot without the card, KDE starts up, but when I insert the card it is not recognized. What gives? :?

There must be something else.

I would guess its trying to get a hostname from the PCMCIA NIC but it isn't working and this is preventing one or more services starting ??

You don't mention if the card is actually working when it boots....

Can you ping your Network or the internet... or is the PCMCIA actually starting but not the actual network

If you type

ifconfig

(as root) what does it tell you???

For my laptop the orinoco card and networking was not installing properly. I had to go to hardrake configure my cards then reboot and configure the network connections. Harddrake was not auto installing either I had to manually choose the right connections.
