Steve Scrimpshire
What kind of video card do you have? What driver are you using? What screen resolutions and other settings for video are you using?
pmpatrick
Do you have dma enabled on your hard dvd drive?
mtweidmann
Have you treid out Ogle? Also check how many background processes you have running. If yuor using KDE you might have better results using arts as the audio output driver.
Guest mahiles
Right.. Video card is a Radeon 9600 Pro using latest driver from ATI website. Screen settings are 1024 X 768 at 75 Hz. How do I check for DMA? Whats happened is maybe 2 weeks ago or so I went to install an rpm and without thinking I let it uninstall some stuff. It's a shame "some stuff" turned out to be half of Mandrake The only other thing that I've done since then is installed the ATI driver..
pmpatrick
You can check for dma by opening a console and running: $ su <enter root password> # hdparm -v /dev/hdx where "x"corresponds to the device file for your dvd drive and hard drive. Guest mahiles
DMA is turned on for both devices
Cannonfodder
Try checking the video resolution. Set it for 16 bit rather than 32 and see if it still happens. Not saying this is always a fix as it may run the same in either mode..
Guest mahiles
I'm already in 16 bit it won't let me select 32 lol.. I had it playing a dvd earlier and it was fine. But now its jumping again. I'm thinking this is to do with hardware rather than what xine or mandrake are doing?
Cannonfodder
It may be your video. If you can't select 32 something is up since you have an ATI board. If you are in a hurry, then reinstall linux. Sound like a cop-out? Well its your time :)
Guest mahiles
Already tried re-installing linux and it happens every time :( Just to make sure I did this right tho.. I downloaded the proper driver from the ATI website and just installed the rpm. Was I supposed to do anything else with it?
sarah31
well dma may be enable but that may not be enough. for example here is the hdparm line that use in order for my dvd playback not to suck a large amount of **s: hdparm -d 1 -X34 -k 1 /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 please note that obviously your cdrom device will be named differently because i do not use Mandrake. But here's a suggestion, do a search for your video board radeon linux XF86Config and see if someone has posted their working solution. Compare it to your solution and see if they are different or same..
