Guest Fudgeum
Ive just installed 9.1 on an old HD to try it out. It installed fine, but after rebooting it eventually gets to a screen saying "localhostlogin" I tried entering my nickname, but nothing happens. After i enter it a few times i get "Id 1 respawning too fast: disabled for 5 mins" Which is just all kinds of bad cheers in advance for any help - Fudgeum PS. ive already tried typing in "startx", didnt work :(
Ixthusdan
"respawnig too fast" a video related problem. Could you tell us what vid card you have?
Guest Fudgeum
Its in my older pc, so its a GF2. But its only loggin in, so i dont think it would be the card. However, after rebooting linux ran what appeared to be a scandisk type program. It asked if i would like to fix the errors (data may be lost) to which i said yes. After rebooting again linux allowed me to login, but (remembering the other post) i typed "startx" then i got... "giving up xinit: no such file or directory (errno 2): unable to cnnect to X server xinit: no such process (errno 3): server error" *depression* is there a link anywhere to a list of linux commands and what they do? (preferably printable) thanks again - Dave PS. other specs. AMD thunderbird 1333 ASUS MB (can find out what type if neccessary) nvidia GF2 what appears to bve the nosiest pc fan on the planet (watercooling has me spoilt)
Ixthusdan
I still think we're dealing with a video problem. I have a gf2gts and have no need to spend any money on a video card! At any rate, when you installed, did you install both x and a manager, like kde or gnome? The init might be missing because, since x has never successfully launched, there has been no opportunity to make an init! Try this: when booting, be sure you are launching without x. If you're using a bootloader, hitting escape and typing "linux 3" will do this. Once you are at a login, log in and navigate to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. Look for an error there, such as monitor refresh or card id. Or post it here, and we can all look at it!! I am assuming you are using the default driver that come with mandrake, yes? Guest Fudgeum
Right, it definatly has x, but i just took the defalut settings for the others during installation (so im assuming it has kde/gnome) i logged in and typed "/etc/X11/XF86Config" and got "Permission denied" _____________________________________________________________ Im also assuming im using the default driver, i havent done anything to it. _____________________________________________________________ When booting up i get the choice of linux, linux-nonfb, failsafe and floppy. I pressed escape and typed in "linux 3" and, after logging in, typed "startx" it appeared to try and start (so it looks like it is graphics settings) but then went back to the login prompt with (ive just picked out the important looking non-generic bits) X Free 86 version 4.3.0 Fatal server error Could not open default font "fixed" XIO: Fatal error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0known processed) with0events remaining. _____________________________________________________________ Also, when loading, as it goes though all the systems (and gets the green "OK" on the right) two of mine "starting atd" and "searchinf for new hardware" _____________________________________________________________ Right, more problems, after rebooting, i got INIT: version 2.84 booting INIT: entering runlevel 5 INIT: Id "1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5min (this did the same for 5-6) INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel _____________________________________________________________ Looks like I'll be reinstalling :(
bvc
Id 1 INIT: Id "1" I don't know what the prob is but it's in an rc script when l1:1:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 1 is executed in /etc/inittab. id:5:initdefault: # System initialization. si::sysinit:/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit l0:0:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 0 l1:1:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 1 l2:2:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 2 l3:3:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 3 l4:4:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 4 l5:5:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 5 l6:6:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 6 localhost:~# ls /etc/rc.d/ init.d rc0.d rc2.d rc4.d rc6.d rc.sysinit rc rc1.d rc3.d rc5.d rc.local rc.modules localhost:~# Personally, I'd try a reinstall first....maybe something weird happened. Or do 'linux 3' again and see what inittab and XF86Config-4 looks like with cat. Login>then su to root (like this) su <hit Enter> enter_roots_password <hit Enter> Your prompt should have gone frome having a $ to a # at the end of it like mine above. You can now destroy everything :P  cat /etc/inittab does it look like mine above? ls /etc/rc.d/ does it have the same files as mine above? cat /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 does it contain this? Section "Files" FontPath "unix/:-1" does it have a complete Section "Monitor" Identifier "monitor1" VendorName "STC" ModelName "eView17p" HorizSync 30-72 VertRefresh 50-160 EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "device1" VendorName "nVidia Corporation" BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce2 DDR (generic)" Driver "nv" EndSection does it have a complete Section "Screen" Identifier "screen1" Device "device1" Monitor "monitor1" DefaultColorDepth 24 Subsection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubsection EndSection I don't think you have a prob with X because I don't think the scripts in /etc/rc.d/rc5.d are ever run (were xfs is for fonts) because of the prob with rc1.d and it's scripts. localhost:~# ls /etc/rc.d/rc1.d K00linuxconf K10xfs K45winbind K60crond K70alsa K89internet K97lm_sensors K05keytable K15gpm K50xinetd K60cups K74apmd K89portmap S00single K09dm K15numlock K56acpid K69sound K80random K90network K10devfsd K20kheader K60atd K70acpi K88syslog K92anacron localhost:~# Which as you can see could take a year to figure out unless something here can be accociated with a possible error in /var/log/messages. If not.....reinstall :(
Ixthusdan
After reading bvc's post, it might also be that your "old" hard drive has some bad sectors, in which case you may want to verify the integrity of the physical drive with a utiliy. Otherwise, data placed in bad sectors will always cause problems.
Guest Fudgeum
Yeah, ive been thinking about that. Its just an old 2Gb HD we had spare that im testing linux on. I tried to reinstall, but i got a load of errors... The HD is satan in box form. The partitioning system that comes with linux (when you install) does it format all of the drive? Or juts part of it? ie: could i stick it on an existing XP HD without losing everything Thanks for all your help - Dave
bvc
could i stick it on an existing XP HD without losing everythingSure, it's done all the time, but there are some things to know. You can search the board for XP* AND install (don't forget the * ---search requires 3 characters) or let Ixthusdan or someone else answer....I use win98, so I only know bits and pieces that I've read. Ixthusdan
I have xp as well. With xp, you're better off having not allowed it to take the entire drive. It places data on both ends of the partitions it makes, sort of preventing other programs from changing the size of its partitions. When I did this with 9.0, it wouldn't touch the xp partition. I ended up having to reinstall xp and setting the partitions up prior to installing. Then it went fine.

Glitz
It sounds like a video configuration problem in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. Could you post the contents of that file for us? Glitz.
Guest Fudgeum
Some suggested this earlier, but i got permission denied :-( Ayway, ive got partitionmagic v8, so im making a parition to install ML onto :-) If i dont come back, pray for me :-( - Dave
Glitz
Have you tried accessing XF86Config-4 as root? In a terminal window, type su<ENTER> and then your root password. You should have access to everything now. Glitz.
