Different lib versions

Just a simple question from a linux newbie.

Is there any problem of having different versions of libs installed in the system?

There are some apps that according to its versions asks, during the installation process for a lib of same version, ie: during xine-ui-0.9.8 installation it asked me for xine-lib-0.9.8. But I had a previous version already installed.

What shoud I do? Install the new one that the xine asks for or install xine with --nodeps argument.

I would try the new libs. But if they want to uninstall your entire system in order to satisfy depends, don't do it! Then I would try no deps. But, that could be fun as well.

There is a risk of libs conflicting with each other, but I would see apps not working correctly as opposed to the system going down.
