manly
Short answer: tar -v(x or j)cf <file_of_coolness.tar.(gz or bz2)> <directory_or_files_of_coolness> :-) Also, try 'man tar' and 'man gzip'. Everything is there. --Andrew
Dyslexic
Minor typo correction: "x" extracts files from an archive. That should be "z or j".

Steve Scrimpshire
Hmmm...I've always added the 'i' option. Will it screw something up?
aru
Minor typo correction: "x" extracts files from an archive. That should be "z or j". nope, :) "x" extracts files from an archive, which is right. To create a tarball you must use "c"; the flag that is used to CREATE the tar package "z" compresses or de-compresses it with gzip, and "j" compresses or de-compresses it with bzip2 HTH
