Learning Java on your own - book recommendations.....?

thanks phunni. I installed eclipse after I read your post, and yes, it looks lighter & easier. I went completely thru the tutorial already.

 

I'm having second thoughts about taking a Java college course without any C++ experience (or ANY OOP experience). Although the professor who teaches Java said he would give me permission to take his course without the C++ prerequisite, what I have read so far (Bruce Eckels Thinking In Java) looks very foreign to a 1980s COBOL programmer like me.

 

Guess I'll try out a few example "Hello world" type programs, and some simple arithmetic operation type programs and see what happens - see if anything "clicks" in my brain.

thats why i only followed the java tutorial trails and worked myself up. i dont admit to mastering the Object-oriented paradigm but I think I can grok the more complex concepts when needed.

 

start with the basics: the jdk, a file editor and a terminal.
