Totem automatically starts at gnome startup

See if there is a "quit" and "close" option in the file menu. If the icon is in the panel bar when you close Totem, then it might start when you turn on the computer. Kaffeine does that to me all the time. If there is a quit option, then choose that when you are through with Totem.

OK, I just downloaded and installed Totem. See if this works. Instead of choosing "quit" in the "Movie" menu, choose "close" by first choosing the arrow that is above the "Movie" menu. "close" is also the alt-f4 keyboard command.
