PeterThePenguin
Hello. I am relatively new to Linux. So far I have installed and working well on 1 laptop and 4 desktops. I have a problem with one of the older desktops. I needed a NIC so I purchased a D-Link NIC known to work with the 2.2.x kernel. I untarred and compiled the driver as instructed without incident. After rebooting and trying "insmod via-rhine.o" I get a message saying "Device or resources busy". It does this all the time. I have given up for now. I would really like to get the thing working so ALL my Linux machines will be networked. I would appreciate any help or advice. And yes I know its ancient but I have new distros too. I just like some nostalgia. Peter
theYinYeti
via-rhine has been suported for a very long time, so it may be that the driver is already loaded. What does the following command tell (as root)? # lsmod | grep -i via Yves.
PeterThePenguin
Hello Yves. Thanks for your reply. Executing that command returns no information at all. Any other ideas. It would seem that the via-rhine module is not installed. Perhaps I should go look in /lib/modules? Peter
PeterThePenguin
Hello Yves. I checked /dev and there is no entry for eth0. I don't know if that helps. Do you suppose a recompilation is in order? Peter
theYinYeti
Executing that command returns no information at all. You didn't type the '#', did you? (that's root's shell prompt) I checked /dev and there is no entry for eth0. Network devices don't appear in /dev. That's OK. What does the following command tell (as root)? # modprobe via-rhine Yves. PeterThePenguin
Please, I'm not THAT much of a noob. I get several messages when I execute this command: One tells me that /etc/conf.modules is newer than /modules.dep another tells me init_module: device or resource busy another tells me that insmod failed the last one tells me that insmod failed as well. Any suggestions? Peter
theYinYeti
One never knows… I'm sorry if I upset you. I'm afraid I won't be able to help you. I'll let you know if I have an idea, though :) By the way: Welcome to this pleasant place :) Yves.
