Guest q6q Posted May 28, 2003 Report Share Posted May 28, 2003 I have an AMD Athlon 755 Mhz, 256MB RAM, AcerView 76e monitor, seagate HDD. I had earlier installed MDK8.2 and YOPER without problems. I decided to try out 9.1 and tried installing it many times over. I have never had any problems installing any linux distros before. Towards the end of the install, whenever I try to configure X, the installer freezes. I cannot switch to console to check what is taking up the CPU. It just freezes every time in whatever order (or sequence or steps) I try the install. Any tips to get around this? Or I will have to use RH or SUSE or go back to Yoper. Thanks. Ixthusdan Posted May 28, 2003 Report Share Posted May 28, 2003 You seem to know linux well enough, but the basics need to be asked. Did you burn the cd's? Check the md5sum? Is you cd media ok? As far as video, what is your video card? And which version of 9.1? (I always assume the download version unless you state otherwise.) Guest q6q Posted May 28, 2003 Report Share Posted May 28, 2003 Burnt the CDs. Checked MD5sums. They matched perfectly. Obviously, I used the download edition of MDK9.1. Video card is an old Diamond Stealth 3D2000 and I have never had any trouble with display before with any linux distro. Ixthusdan Posted May 28, 2003 Report Share Posted May 28, 2003 I agree with tyme. Don't configure your video just yet. And boot to the command line instead of launching x. There is more to aid trouble shooting after you have a working system. After your reboot, type startx and the output will give us a solution. tyme Posted May 28, 2003 Report Share Posted May 28, 2003 XF86Setup isn't all that great, but it would be a start-and it may work. I believe mandrake has it's own tool for doing this from command line, but I can't remember what it is (it's easier to use than XF86Setup I'm sure). if you skipped configuring the x server during install, and tried startx, then posted the error you received, we could also go from there. Guest q6q Posted May 29, 2003 Report Share Posted May 29, 2003 Used XFDrake. It correctly recognized all my hardware and I accepted the defaults it suggested. Then it offered to run a test which failed many times with the same error 'execve failed. Failed to start /etc/X11/X. errno 2' This is how I remember it. Please help. Apparently, you're not the only one having problems. here and here It looks like there's an issue with the new XFree and your graphics card. Try running XFDrake again and this time select the older version of XFree. I think it's in the graphics card selection part. At the bottom of the card listings there are entries for XFree4 and XFree3. Expand the XFree3 list and I beleive S3V is the right choice for your card. Guest q6q Posted June 2, 2003 Report Share Posted June 2, 2003 I get the exact error messages posted on one of the URLs. I tried using XFree 3.3 with S3Virge server and many different combinations. (Using XFDrake). Nothing works. Although Yoper RC had no issues with my display card and it uses XFree4.1.x I believe. Thanks for your help guys. Giving up. I tried the (boxset) CD's and got the same erros as described fro other chipsets, namely the DRAKE tool. There is tons of stuff missing from the /etc/X11/init directories is the reason. I did a expert text ... and still the same thing. I have a set of newer CD's I bough to replace the boxset. (Came with a mag).
