Boot stalls at "setting up logical volume manag.."

OK, I'm back with the same problem child - trying to install Power Pack 2008 on an HP Pavilion dv9723 laptop.

 

This is the system config:

1. AMD Turion 64x2 mobile processor running @ 2.0 GHz

2. 2.00Gb RAM

3. Two (2) 120Gb SATA drives

4. NVIDIA 256Mb GeForce 7150M video

5. VISTA Home Premium 32.

 

I replaced the VISTA drive with an eqivalent clean drive on which I installed XP Home. I installed Mandriva Power Pack 2008 on the second drive for a dual boot system. The Power Pack installed with no problem, but when I try to boot Linux from the hard drive the boot stalls on "setting up logical volume management". I also installed the Mandriva Linux to a clean single-disk config but got the same result.

 

Any ideas out there?

The only thing I can think of is to basically press I for interactive when you're viewing in verbose mode and then choose what services you want enabled/disabled when the system boots. If you are using Logical Volume Management, then I suggest that you don't disable this, otherwise your system won't boot. However, if you just have standard partitions on just one disk, it should be possible to boot your system with this disabled. Normally this is used for spanning partitions across disks.

Thanks for your suggestion and I'm sorry for the response delay; I was out of town for a few days.

 

Getting into the interactive boot mode proved impossible as the system ignores keyboard input. I then went back to the single disk config where LVM shouldn't be an issue. As I mentioned earlier, the boot still dies. However, inspection of the boot messages and a comparison of the verbose boot with two other systems running the same distro indicates the stall occurs during "Checking Root Filesystem". Now I'm wondering if the fact that the HDDs are SATA is an issue here?
